There was an episode of the television series where they did. Gomez was intended for Morticia’s sister Ophelia – old families of means still arranging things – but his chemistry with Morticia was undeniable.

      Not necessarily.

I believe that the “wayward” is quite important here. She knows that Walky’s got the hots for Amber, and that she thinks they’re destined to eventually bonk each other. I mean, she told him as much just a few strips ago. But as long as he’s not following this desires for Amber, it’s going to be wayward.

As for Joyce, I’m not sure if she thinks Joyce has the hots for Walky, nor is she aware who Joyce really has the hots for*; but she does know that Joyce is suppressing her sexual desires into aimlessly wandering around with not real outlet.

*My bet is Dorothy’s head on Jacob’s body**

**Joyce: The other way around is also acceptable!

… I don’t think Joyce will end up pan and in a poly relationship with Jacob and Dorothy but if Joyce grows up, Dorothy either changes life goal or decides she’s OK playing to the section of the crowd who’ll go “threesome, hurr hurr” and vote for her in the hopes of sexy stuff, and Jacob decides to give a relationship model still built around commitment and trust but that isn’t monogamous a shot – I could see that working out pretty well… Hmmm…

I was not talking about a poly relationship, but rather Joyce’s dream relationship.

Which is a trope that really needs to die. “You two fight all the time. You must be in love!” Sure, that works out well.

In this case though it’s the “wayward” as others have said. Whatever you think of the Joyce/Walky crack ship, right now they each have other interests they’re lusting after. Movies where the boy and girl bicker because of their horniness, but aren’t actually into other people are much rarer.

    • Marsh Maryrose

      April 16, 2019 at 12:30 am | # | Reply

The question is not which movies fall into this category; the question is how many rom-coms don’t.

Someone on Patreon correctly pointed out that the ur-example of this is Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” the basis for “10 Things.” “Much Ado” is, of course, also a Kenneth Branagh/Emma Thompson movie.

The ones that popped into my head right away were “The African Queen” and “Desk Set” and “You’ve Got Mail,” which only goes to show how long it’s been since I regularly watched movies.

Joyce and Walky will always have chemistry. It’s just that this universe has not had them go through the difficult (indeed, traumatic) young adulthood that changed them enough for it not to be an ultimately negative chemistry.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the two end up doing something stupid in a moment of passion but I don’t see them having a lasting romantic entanglement without maturing a lot.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised Walky hasn’t seen The Social Network, A Beautiful Mind, or Good Will Hunting.

Walky is surely wrong, I told myself. And the comment section is going to provide examples.

Walky and Joyce might’ve been good in the original, but I’ll be dammed if that shit gets a rerun here.

Okay, so Sal has either seen the Walkyverse or she’s seen a romcom at some point in her life.

When Dumbing of Age first started the movie Single White Female was as old as most of the students. And now I feel a whole helluva lot older having looked that up.

Good job, Sal. With your newfound ability to stay out of conflicts, you can ignore Joyce and Walky’s bickering in order to claim the real ultimate reward for all your growth: you get to eat that sandwich. In peace, sort of. Enjoy!

But Walky can’t date anyone who hasn’t broken up with Danny yet, it’s the rules.

Frustrated Sal is new to me. I think she needs to find more people to at least verbally spar with. Joyce, Walky and Danny are too easy, Malaya is just a pointless antagonist to her. Marcie is great for that, Amber’s a bit too antisocial for repartee. Jason?
