I wonder how many furry artists got their start by being all “Gah, all my feet look like weird paws! Maybe I’ll just make her a wolf or some shit, then it’ll look normal.”
As an avid collector of furry art I can say that the majority of the artwork I have commissioned either doesn’t include feet, or has the character(s) wearing shoes so you may be right.
In my middle school art class, we learned about how drawing hands is The Worst, and then had a project focused specifically on drawing hands. While I’ve never been much of a draughtsman, that did lead to me becoming better at drawing hands than I was at any other body part. Which was kinda funny! past 9th grade, any drawings I did were just doodles, but the “hands” thing held up enough that one time a classmate saw me drawing hands on the edges of my classwork and was like, “Wow, are you really good at drawing?” And I said, “No.” And then I went back to sketching out my crush’s name in ASL finger spelling.
The distance from your wrist to where your fingers begin is the same as the distance from your chin to the tip of your nose. The whole hand is about double that distance.
I never could draw worth a fart, but I made a few bucks posing for figure drawing classes when I was in college. The things I remember from the work I saw: (1) a lot of students fudged on hands, feet, knees, and ears (they just didn’t draw them) and (2) the students who actually drew detailed representations of my crotch magnified my junk by a factor of two (I guess their eyes were just drawn there?). I don’t recall hips being a particular bugbear.

Yeah but fixing that problem would require giving money to hospitals, which the worthless oxygen thieves in power have decided is a great evil, because what if what if what if.
The problem is not a lack of money. The problem is the mass of laws and policies that create perverse incentives which ensure that much of the money spent doesn’t go to the most productive use. Bloated administrative costs soak up huge amounts of money while doing little to improve anyone’s health. Lack of competition and transparent pricing allow inefficiency to thrive, since providers lack a clear incentive to improve. The often massive disconnect between those paying for care and those receiving it means that patients may also lack motive to make sure they’re actually getting the best value. Given the many structural failings, trying to improve US healthcare by throwing more money at it is a lot like trying to fight a fire by smothering it with gasoline.
Thing is, the hands, feet and big brains all came as kind of a package. Adapting to walk upright allowed the forelimbs to specialize in grasping and manipulation. Keeping all this new stuff coordinated and taking maximum advantage of it required bigger, fancier brains. Eventually brain size and gestational development came to a rough equilibrium. Whether or not this balance is ideal is highly debatable, but the only thing natural selection cares about is “Does this work often enough for a population to sustain itself?”
I’ll just come out and say it, it ain’t hands, feet, hips or any of that that’s the hardest. As an AuDHD artist, the hardest part for me is even getting started on a new project. ?

I also find that it is like singing, in that if one wants to show you the work that they have put in and done, they don’t want you to critique it but instead want compliments. Also people tend to be very sensitive if someone says that they were bad at it when they were a kid. Maybe because art, like someone’s voice, it is very personal. Having an “s” and “sh” sounds speech impediment, I would normally get criticism on how I talked or sang growing up. I have heard similar stories from others relating to both that and artwork.
I normally draw alright if I have something to reference (probably due to my scientific training where you would have to draw and label what you see in labs). I am absolutely horrible at drawing something without a reference.
Artists use references all the time. A science background would be great for the skill of drawing what you see, not what you think you see. Please feel proud to use that skill.
Modeling could be interesting for Jacob. He hates when people want to be close to him just cause of his body, but here there’s no intimacy in objectification, just abstraction. . .

Trying to draw realistic human figures in general is a pain. If I have to draw a person I pretty much resort to stick figures.
