I know the clock’s been reset a few times in the past, but I don’t know how fiddly that is.
Steamweed
Depends on the cause. Might be an old battery. OR constant high cpu load. First is easy; second not as such.
Marianne
But why would anyone even be running a server on the internet without using NTP to automatically set its clock, and keep it within a second or two of the real time at all times? It’s not a hard thing to set up, and it’s built into almost every OS of the past… 15 or so years so you generally don’t even have to.
Clif
Its a devious plot by Big Comic to destabilize Hiveworks and seize control of their artists.
there are ways to sync computer, esp. server computer time with publicly available super-correct atomic clocks over the internet. An NTP client or NTP service (daemon, in unix parlance) is usually installed and running the whole time (or often enough). Once a ntp daemon is running it doesn’t matter whether the physical realtime clock battery is wonky or if the host computer is trying to give wrong time to your virtual computer. But the ntp daemon needs to be running, and sometimes it craps out as well.
Virtual machines are pretty terrible at time keeping. Usually the easiest way to counteract this is to run some kind of time synchronisation service inside the VM. On most modern Linux systems this will be handled automatically by systemd-timedated.
I suspect the server this site is running on is considerably older than when this became standard.
A gas leak in the dorms *would* explain that entire page in the Slipshine where Dorothy begs Joyce to pin her down by her weak little bee wings, and insists that they need to repopulate the hive…
this is rly sad iirc the gas leak basically ruined this person’s life
Wait what happened?
Tweet’s deleted, here’s Wayback Machine.
Re: the gas leak. It’s been really weird and uncomfortable that it went viral because it kind of ruined my life. I was abysmally depressed, I couldn’t focus or stay awake, I lost good friends and the best job I ever had and $ is running out. I don’t know what to do and I’m scared

I have to ask: do your gas suppliers not add a distinctive odour to the gas like they do here in Ireland? Hard to imagine failing to notice that smell.
Maybe it’s just one of those regulations that your wealthy people insist is “evil” and “damaging to the economy” or whatever.
Ruth if you touch a folicle of that perfect haircut you won’t have to worry about your suicidal ideation anymore because I will take care of it for you
other than hair gel or some pins i think cutting her bangs would just look awkward versus a full shave , tho i tend to not keep my bangs too long/never grew long enough to part (tho i have a habit of adjusting myu glasses and sometimes a stray hair gets plucked in the leg/side even if it’s not esp long lol)
I think she’s just checking whether she would look good with less bands, and whether she wants to cut her bangs too. I sincerely hope she doesn’t because Ruth’s haircut is cute, and suits her well. Although it might get a reaction out of Billie/Jennifer which would be entertaining.
i feel like while it’s a visual for the readers, it wouldn’t be as effective without ruth looking in a mirror versus “maybe it’s better if i move someof my bangs outta my eyes/vision”
other than growing it out purposefully to side part i think trimming them too short would look like those ‘baby bangs’ thatp pl associate with terfs or just be too much forehead/’fivehead’, which might look fine for some ppl but i imagine a lot of ppl have bangs to hide that area , maybe the full ‘slick back and ponytail’ look might look cool on a tomboy/sporty person but i think my hairs would still stick outta place without hair gel and pins versus it being long enough for a tight ponytail
Are we about to see Becky in her room being miserable after avoiding Ruth’s questioning, or do we think Becky is actually doing better?
I really doubt it’s the latter, but that would be a pleasant surprise. Especially if it leads to Becky and Dina talking and/or Becky apologizing to Dina.

Wow server clock drift is getting ridiculous.
Cholma
No kidding. Hiveworks needs to get off their ass and fix this. It’s been going on for years.

We can put a man on the moon, we have literal supercomputers in our pockets, yet
ZombieKyrik
I know right? I was sitting here hitting refresh for an extra 5 minutes before the comic was posted.
Willis, is there anything you can do about the clock drift, or do we just have to live with it?
Alongcameaspider
I checked initially at around 12:17 and it was still yesterday’s comic, I dont think its ever been this bad before
ZombieKyrik
I’m on Central time, so the comic normally updates at “11”pm for me, or more accurately 11:15ish.

Everything should be getting NTP from the NIST.
Olofa
N to the I to the S to the Teeeeeee!
VicMortimer
It was standard to sync the time with NTP over a quarter century ago. ntpd was around long before the abomination that is systemd.

This is a deep cut and I respect you for it

Always love when Poison Jr was allowed out to play.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t that. Thank you for the information.

I followed the link. but I still feel that I’m missing some context.

They definitely add odor to natural gas in my neck of the woods (America), but IDK where PoisonJr was living.

if there’s one thing i can be relied on for, its making unhinged posts about Dorothy Keener

Seconded.

Becky is very good at avoiding dealing with her problems much in the same way that Amber is good at avoiding situations she doesn’t want to deal with.

Becky came from an environment where a Stepford smile is a survival tactic.

Ahhhh! Forehead!!
it’s gonna take so much more before this place turns into Greendale

what’s Ruth doing in the last three panels? checking how she’d look like with similar bangs?
ZombieKyrik
I think she’s just checking whether she would look good with less bands, and whether she wants to cut her bangs too. I sincerely hope she doesn’t because Ruth’s haircut is cute, and suits her well. Although it might get a reaction out of Billie/Jennifer which would be entertaining.

Also, as the alt-text points out …
Derek
the alt-text when the comic updated and when I posted that comment was “she’s never”, I assume Willis went back and edited it later to clarification

Something something “if I stare at this long enough it’ll become a strip about Ruth and Billie”
Clif
Interesting hypothesis which is testable. Please publish your results here.
Effie
“long enough” is not a well-defined hypothesis. 24 hours? 96 hours? 800 hours?
Clif
Keep testing.

Isn’t it?

lol going from Not At All A Plot-Relevant Haircut to Not At All A Visual Indicator That Becky Is In A Dark Place Mentally Right Now, I see.

Becky I simply don’t believe you, sorry girl. And if Ruth knew the whole situation I doubt she would either

stick with the bangs, Ruth!

Gonna place my bets on doing badly, but from an unexpected angle.

I’m just assuming that Becky is setting up to kill Dorothy and take her place.

No spoilers from the Patreon, but I’m betting that tomorrow’s comic is going to be…. yeah.
