    A bit blunt there Dina; people who weren’t Sarah might not have taken it near as well. Which makes me wonder if we’re going to see her figuring out what is and is not acceptable behavior as she experiments with humor and conversation, with consequences more severe than a quick apology to Amber and odd looks. If she’s taking lessons from Becky in being a bit better at things like jokes and social interaction in general, then there’s a better chance of her having to confront that. I’m interested to see.

        Well, she didn’t specify what Sarah was her favorite of. She might mean ‘favorite peer,’ rather than ‘favorite person.’ Obviously whatever category Sarah’s attained second place in doesn’t include inanimate objects, or fossils and/or cocoa puffs would probably win.

      Let’s face it – Amber is really only able to tolerate the presence of other people with the exception of Ethan and Danny. Dina may be uncertain about how social interactions work but I think she is quite able to understand that Amber isn’t fully happy with her continued presence.

      That isn’t “Amber is a bad person”, it’s “Amber is as bad about social interactions as Dina, she’s just less nice about it”.

I’d been under the impression that first base was just smooching, no tongue required. But then, I never really gave it a lot of thought because I’m an asexual with no interest in sports.

    I just got back from vacation and this is the first strip I’m reading in like 3 weeks and I’m just so glad it wasn’t heartbreak and doom but instead two of my favorite ladies doing some awkward-yet-cute bonding in their own unique way 🙂

    So, Dina clearly sees honesty as the best policy. This is one area where I differ from her. For all I have significant gaps in my social skills, one social skill I have learned to some extent is telling people what they want to hear, and I tend to default to that when interacting with people.

    I’m not saying this is a good thing. It’s an avoidance tactic to an extent because I really don’t know how to do conflict and confrontation. I tend to avoid making waves or do anything that might disrupt my familiar routine. Also, I don’t have very high self-esteem, and I tend to feel compelled to please others because my instinct is to place a higher value on others than myself. This is unhealthy. I might as well walk around holding up a neon sign that says, “Hi, I’m a doormat. Please step on me, and use me to wipe all the crap off the bottom of your shoe.” It’s really not a good thing, and it’s something for me to work on.

    Still, I can see how being too blunt can have pitfalls too. There’s got to be a healthy middle ground somewhere.

    Even so, I don’t really think being “second favorite” is so bad, especially when one considers how many people Dina must encounter on campus on a daily basis. I’m sure Sarah ranks quite a bit higher than Toedad McDickbag.

    I can understand Dina’s confusion regarding bases. There’s no real logic or sense to the assignment of bases. I’ve heard more than one definition of the bases myself.

    Maybe Sarah could lead a tutorial on the bases. Dina would take copious notes. Becky might as well. Joyce would be deeply conflicted regarding whether she should go back into BSOD mode, or take some copious notes of her own.

      first off, much empathy for the first 2 paragraphs. that happy medium is where the lucky oblivious people get to live effortlessly.

      secondly, it’s not so much that being second favorite is bad, but that the state of mind that one would normally have to be in to tell another person that they are not their favorite is typically something like passive-aggressive back-handed malice. dina is obviously not pulling that, but most people would avoid the possibility of misunderstanding all the same. that’s probably what sarah is ‘wow’ing.

      i do like how dina is now clearly aware that she may be considered weird and that sarah felt the urge to state it

        Yyyeeaaahhhh, my brain’s got a whole lot of those inconsistencies and contradictions going on. I’ve been stumping professionals since early childhood for a reason.

        I’m working on making my peace with the fact that the scattered pieces of my brain are never going to form a cohesive whole that makes sense to anyone, ever. When I die (probably 50-60 years from now if family history is anything to go by), I’d like to donate my body to science. Examination of my brain will raise many, many questions.

        Also, I present very differently in text than I do IRL. That particular characteristic is one I suspect is not unique to me.

    I’ve been watching this with as much glee as most other people, but a part of me is worried. Just how much do Dina and Becky have in common? How much is Dina’s attraction to Becky based off of Becky taking the time to talk to her? I hope I’m worrying over nothing, after all we can’t see every interaction they have, so maybe there’s more to it. It’s just that thus far the only long,mundane, non-dickbag dad or other drama conversation between the two of them was at the party (I think).

    I suppose I’m worrying over things we don’t know yet. It remains to be seen what sort of stamina the relationship between these to has (and just what Dina is going to think of physical intimacy with Becky, kissing, cuddling, canoodling, etc.)

      Well, Becky likes her enough to actively discuss Dina’s favourite topic, and also very vocally proclaimed how much she wanted to hit on her. Dina, I feel, has a crush on her the same way Walky did on Dorothy, it’s just that Dina’s good at rationally processing her feelings, so instead of lobbing toys at Becky’s head she decides to go talk to her and tell her that she likes her.

      So I don’t think there’s enough to say anything on how intimate Dina is expecting things to go, but she at least feels there’s a notable difference in her feelings for Becky and Sarah, and she seemed pretty happy at the prospect of kissing Becky. I can assume enough on why they would both want to date each other, but since it just started there’s really nothing to say on how they’d make it work, other than Becky thinks Dina is super cute and has shown and stated how much she likes her, and Dina just likes talking to Becky and being with her. Aside from that, I feel that some of Becky’s motivation is based on finding companionship away from Joyce.
