        Whether Dina is catatonic or not, the eyes of the triceratops look really animated and alive in the last panel. The triceratops appears to have achieved consciousness. Apparently, that was a kiss powerful enough to wake the dead, and even the long extinct.

        I feel like the triceratops has become a character in his/ her own right and deserves a tag here.

        That’s ’cause she doesn’t look twelve or have her typical ‘blank’ face in that panel. It’s a different, more adult Dina that surprisingly suits her. Still not quite on the slipshine boat yet, but this was incredibly nice, sensual, and sweet.

      Yup, I noticed this as well. “Defying Gravity,” and “Let it Go,” respectively.

      I saw Wicked on Broadway YEARS ago, but I had forgotten that particular line. Then when I saw “That Perfect Girl” for the storyline after next, my mind went right to “Let it go, let it go/ That perfect girl is gone.” That got me thinking about Idina Menzel and how “Let it Go,” shares very similar themes with Defying Gravity. That inspired me to track down a video of that song. They came to the part about “And if I’m flying solo/ At least I’m flying free/ To those who’d ground me./ Take a message back from me

      I got ridiculously excited at discovering the source of the next storyline title. Of course, that song ends on a witch hunt, and David Willis has dropped hints that the next storyline will be a dark one. That actually may not bode well.

      Regardless, it’s fun to connect the dots.

    Mine was during after school make up class in the hallway with my first (and only) GF my Junior year. She even wore lipstick cuz I totally thought lipstick was hot. And I still do!

      And I will always have a very, very fond place in my heart for her.

      Me and the girl had just left a dance and i did the cliche with the jacket and I just did it. It wasn’t until over a month later I had learned from a mutual friend of ours that I suck at kissing.

      I was a freshman in college. Yes, college. I never kissed or dated anyone my entire time in high school. I was eighteen going on nineteen.

      It was on a park bench at night with a guy I should never have gotten involved with for a bunch of reasons, but went out with him several times nevertheless.

      He described me using terms such as “strangely beautiful.” Strangely. He liked the term “strange” regarding me. On another occasion, he told me that it’s fine if I want to be “the strange girl on the block, but–” then he went on to tell me a bunch of things I should do in order to improve how I present. I never saw or spoke to him again after that.

      Incidentally, I never tried to be “the strange girl on the block.” I was highly insecure with extremely poor self-image, and the only thing I was trying to be back then was normal.

      On a happier note, I did have better kissing (among other things) experiences with other guys. There was a sad lack of dinosaur hoodies, though.

      Pinned down in a sparring match that took an unwanted turn to flirting, I couldn’t actually move anything but my neck. The lad refused to get off me, so I tried the old Steve Carell. Alas, while Steve Carell’s kiss can freeze Russian mobsters in their tracks, real life is rarely so simple. You see, the boy LIKED it. One overly-long smooch later, and I still was trapped! (Now trapped and traumatized.)

      And the moral of THIS story, kids, is that you should only kiss someone when YOU BOTH want to do so, and never as a defensive maneuver. That only works for femme fatales in spy movies, and sometimes Steve Carell.

      Blind date, if you will, back in 2001.  I was posting on another bulletin board and an impromptu face-to-face had been arranged; no RSVP but anyone from the board who wanted to meet and put a face to the handles on the board were invited to get together at the MN State Fair.  Turns out only two people showed up — yours truly and a female known on the board as ‘Katie Barefoot’.  We hit it off well together; both about the same age and well-matched in terms of intelligence and sense of humor. Spent most of the afternoon at the fair; then bailed for a minor-league baseball game (the St. Paul Saints) and then a late-evening snack at Mickey’s Diner.  Had a great time and agreed it would be nice if we got together again.  Then, as we parted and while I was wondering if I should try for a chaste ‘good-night’ peck on the cheek she leaned over and put a lip-lock on me like I had never experienced before, but made me realize that there were other things in life that were more fun than riding a bicycle!

      Mine was… weird. I’m ace and at the time of my first kiss, my soon-to-be partner had a sexual crush on me and had confessed it and I was willing, but I wanted to make sure there was a romantic component too and that she accepted the fact that I was ace. There was also a lot of building up in my head as I hadn’t kissed anyone in a long time so I wanted my first time to be “special” because everyone is a bit dumb when they are younger. It all ended well and the kiss ended up being a conformation of her support for me and the beginning of a really awesome relationship. We’re broken up now, but lasted a good 8 and a half years together.

        But yeah, I was smiling like a loon like Dina after it, because I had only recently figured out I was ace and I was a little worried what that might mean with regards to social support from potential romantic partners, so being accepted was a huge thing even if the kiss itself was kind of mediocre on both our parts. (We got better with practice and reproducible controlled experiments 😉 )

      Mine wasn’t until my 3rd year in college (yes, I know, I’m not much of a ‘people person’), but it was not only my first kiss, but also the first time I had sex. Must have made an impression, because she and I kept meeting up each weekend after that at her apartment.

Then Becky decides to move in with her new girlfriend, Dina. Three’s a bit of a crowd, so they suggest that Dina’s roommate, Amber, switch places (and roommates) with Becky. Through the same revolving-door-timing that happened at Joyce’s dorm party, combined with Sal’s penchant for windows , Sal and Amber don’t meet until Amber is settled into her new room. And suddenly Amazi-girl is living with the William Stryker to her Wolverine.

    With regards to Becky’s “me too”, I’m heavily tempted to post a BSG style “So say we all” clip.

    But instead I just want to dwell on that 4th panel. All that fear as Becky is so scared yet another kiss has ended in rejection and heartbreak and that all that relief in Panel 5 when it turns out Dina is just overloaded on the bubbly romantic feelings.

    This is shaping to be so healthy for the both of them that it’s absolutely adorable to watch.

    Normally I’d make a comment praising how cute the couple are together and maybe even sqee-ing to make a point, but here, I want to thank you.
    You’ve captured one of life’s joys.
    You’ve not only put on display (perhaps better than you ever have before), not only the joy of being with someone you care about, but the sheer giddiness felt from the first kiss with someone you love.
    And here’s the kicker, it feels simple. There’s no alcoholic suicide pact, or “just for fun boyfriend”, or even alter egos here, and while i think those are great writing that give more depth to the characters, they niggle in the back of my mind whenever I see the relationship. Here though, you’ve created a scene so real that it made me forget about Toenail Dad or the fact that Becky shouldn’t even be at the university. You’ve created the most human moment I’ve seen in any comic strip, and I want to thank you for that from the bottom of my heart.

      Joyce is nice, but she is getting a bit boring. Dina, now that’s a leading Lady. Smart, brave, clever, sure of herself without being over confident, loyal to her friends and damn near the most cutest – verging on sexiest – member of the cast.
