idk if she has some kinda serious issue but depending you’d think she’d have some kinda assistance if it affects her university life (since she’s shown to ‘space out’ rather than onl ybeing like that around carla)
In my experience IU isn’t great at accommodating special needs like that, there are external services you can contract if you need an aide or something, and for more physical disabilities like a deaf student needing an interpreter it’s easier simply because there’s more awareness for that so the University is better about it, but for the more neurological/mental stuff it can be like pulling teeth, and that’s if whatever accommodations you need are actually on offer at all. I tried to get a basic accommodation for extended test time, something I’d gotten at literally every other school I’d ever gone to, from elementary through high school and even at the local community college I went to for some pre-reqs before transferring to IU, and everywhere else I’ve ever been providing documentation from my psychiatrist and my transcripts from my previous schools along with a single meeting with administrators and whatever professionals they have for dealing with that stuff and I’d have my accommodation. At IU I made an appointment with the appropriate office, showed up with all my documentation in-hand, and discovered the office empty at the appointed time with a pile-up of documents that looked similar to my own (in envelopes that I did not open, just packets of documents similar size and thickness to my own with labels similar to my own) that made it clear nobody had actually been in there for a long, long time. I did *eventually* manage to get ahold of an actual person on the phone who told me to mail in copies (which it looked like they’d just go to the pile at the empty office with the rest) and they assured me my situation would be reviewed and they’d get back to me within a few months. I never heard back from them, and was never able to get an actual person on the phone from that entire department ever again, after my second year there I just gave up. Thankfully I wound up not needing that accommodation anymore, and that was the only one I had expected any need for, so it was no real loss for me, but I guarantee there were probably several hundred students (just judging from the size of the pile and extrapolating that it simply continued to grow from there) who actually DID need accommodations for things significantly more serious than what I had going on who definitely fell through the cracks, considering the metaphorical cracks were basically the size of the san andreas fault.
But, yeah, no, I wouldn’t expect her to receive ANY accommodations, reasonable or otherwise, not unless Willis decides to somehow make the University LESS shitty than reality for some reason, but I can’t imagine why Willis would do anything like that in THIS comic.
anon
I wonder if there are college students with emotional support dogs, but i imagine since booster isn’t fussing over her , they aren’t worried about charlie being left on her own
Can’t speak for IU specifically, but yeah, in general schools don’t seem to be great at handling disability accommodations (tbh SOCIETY in general isn’t great at it).
And this does actually go for physical disabilities as well. You’re right that the more awareness there is re: a specific type of disability, the higher the chances accommodations will be available, but there are physical disabilities for which awareness is very low as well, like complex chronic illnesses and/or chronic pain.
Most people tend to have a very narrow idea of what constitutes a “disability.” Their mental image of what disability looks like tends to be restricted to visible ones, such as being in a wheelchair (and most weirdly assume wheelchair always = paralyzed/unable to walk or move legs at all), missing a limb, or being blind. Also deafness (which is interesting, I wonder how so much awareness developed for that one when most invisible disabilities are overlooked?). But anyone who “looks healthy/abled” tends to have an uphill battle to have the existence/validity of our disabilities recognized at all, let alone accommodated, regardless of whether they’re mental of physical.
Carla: “She could also use the fire escape. And with her build, the ventilation shafts are not an impossibility. Now, can I be 100% certain she doesn’t own a grapnel gun?”
(Soon)
Newscaster: “And the ten thousand drones that have descended upon Briscoe Hall have been identified as Ruttech property. The situation is developing and thus far we have received no communications from the terrorists save that this is about “Charlie”. We go now to published Manson Family expert…”
it’d be hilariously ironic/fucked up if somehow she randomly tripped/stumbled with a crowd staring (yet charlie still not noticing), being embarrassed and running off and then actively avoiding her/trying to not get her attention and then charlie finally noticing her being ‘stealthy’ or so lol.
@needfuldooer: god i’d love that to track down some friends when it was a pain to get ahold of them pre ssmartphone era, or a sublte ver about it on everyone else b/c i am terrible w/ names and faces
I mean, I’m pretty sure she literally did hold up a bright red sign clearly labeling herself as “CARLA” back when she first started trying to get Charlie’s attention.
But then again, maybe the REAL problem was just the lack of neon lights in the sign! Quick, Carla! Requisition those parts ASAP!

Honestly, Dina could probably give some genuinely good advice to Carla about how to talk to your crush when you’re not used to that particular social situation. Like, I don’t know, something along the lines of “be clear and open about your romantic intentions” or “talk with her about an interest of yours you think she might share, and listen to what she tells you about it.” The problem, of course, is that Carla would refuse to listen to any advice that acknowledges the existence of her own emotions (that aren’t spiteful glee)!
Which of course, once again leads us to why Sarah would be the perfect person to give her romantic advice!
I mean probably. I’d say they might take her up on the offer and just complain the whole time, but they refused an XBOX, and I don’t know if they’d be all that interested in the Short Circuit 2 filming locations tour
maybe she had it folded in her pockets, i think her dress actually has pockets lol tho given she got up super early just to see her i’d imagine she’d have some kinda pack even if we didnt see her with a purse on screen lol
Hey if you’re going to go through the trouble of drawing that dress even once, you might as well get two whole strips out it. Work smarter, not harder.
the best/worst part is, it’s not copy+pasted. willis redraws and colors it fresh in every panel- you can see the lines and pattern shifting slightly each time. he CHOSE to draw that plaid, over and over. on PURPOSE.
has anyone checked on him? someone should check on him.
Plaid’s not really that hard to draw at least not when digital. My former digital art teacher once said it’s a great way to impress people without working to hard because there’s several ways to do plaid designs easily. Redrawing that design every time though is kind of insane. Although making a selection for every panel and wrapping the design to that can be equally tedious. I wonder what Willis’ work flow is like. That would be interesting to see.
Li
Willis has indicated all the plaid is drawn by hand and that this stuff is in fact hard for them.
My understanding is that Willis will copy-paste the same blue rough “pencils” when appropriate, but redoes the final line-art “inks” separately for each panel, as well as the shading. My guess would be that the plaid lines go through a similar process with reused “inks,” but it’s perfectly possible that I’m wrong and they’re done freehand.
… Carla intrigues me. I’m so curious to know more about her character to understand why she thinks someone seeing a hat that stands out is a prank. Like, Weird Internet Levels of “Trolling(?)” going on.
She’s just spouting bullshit to try and rationalize her anxiety and the strange feelings that come from having a crush on someone Especially because she finds herself wanting the attention of someone who won’t give it to her, and all prior indications being that she’s kind of a spoiled brat who has spent her entire life getting what she wants.
I genuinely like Carla she’s such a fun character.
The view of someone with one semester of psychology on a fiction character:
I think, much like Sarah, Carla tends to bury her true feelings under repellent or otherwise more aggressive emotions (likely, I believe, to avoid vulnerability and thus rejection). She ceaselessly talks, and sometimes behaves, in a manner suggesting extreme narcissism, but hardly acts like one when the chips are down and those around her need her. Here, she probably needs to justify her attempts to gain Charlie’s interest as something where Carla has the power rather than Charlie. Charlie could reject a Carla asking her out, but a Carla playing some kind of brilliant and subtle prank on Charlie is the one defining the situation – Carla has the power and is thus not vulnerable.
Hey uh I know your class is pathologizing the heck out of ADP and NDP, but for the record real people with those diagnoses are still human beings capable of as much variation in kindness and compassion as anyone else. High empathy does not make good people and low empathy does not make bad people. Compassion is what’s important.
Mturtle7
Is…is this comment also a prank? What the hell is going on?
I’m squinting at this comment now to try and figure out how it follows @True Survivor’s comment, and I got nothin’.
I want her to confront Walky and for Lucy to be there. Not just for a chance of a little more of the shine coming off of Walky in her eyes. Lucy was really excited about having breakfast with “popular people”, and she was hanging out with the daughter of billionaires last October.
Lucy is a social second-hander. She values herself according too who likes her. Or tolerates her.

We do see her feeling ostracized. When they saw each other during the floor meeting at the beginning of the semester, we didn’t see if they even greeted each other. Not every burgeoning friendship takes off, but I want to know more.
