Yep, an atrium is basically the porch of a public building. As a non-churchgoer, I mostly associate them with banks, where it’s somewhere to put the cash machines so you can use them when the bank’s closed without being rained on and with less chance of being mugged. I think it originally meant the courtyard at the centre of a Roman villa.
