It was more the previous comic where marcie is leaning against her in perfect contentment and she has no reaction to it whatsoever
Aeron
…that you can observe.
Em
Malaya might not have noticed Marcie’s reaction. Also, cuddling between female friends is something that is generally considered to be a okay, so since she’s busy studying, she might not have thought anything of it. Because she thought nothing of it, that leads me to believe she is straight.
If a girl leaned on me like that, and I didn’t know her sexuality, I would assume it was flirtatious.
Sam
Actually, I think in Shortpacked she was shown to go both ways, and then she entered a relationship with Ultra Car.
I think a lot of people are more likely to assume that it is platonic than flirtatious really because a lot of friends lean on each other just because they are tired without it meaning anything past ‘I am tired, you are now for resting against’.
agentksilver
She flirted briefly with going both ways, but realized she was 100% straight when Leslie kissed her. She is, however, totally into robots shaped like girls.
But what she says later is pretty clearly “I’m not into women OR men”. Shorter version of that is “asexual”. Malaya’s still interested in sex as a general concept, which puts her in the gray ace category.
(Robin also said she was straight, like, a lot of times, then “straight with an exception”, then “sorta undefinable queer”. People’s understandings of their sexualities change over time.)
Raibean
Grayness is about attraction. There are aces who aren’t gray who enjoy sex.
Sam
Ah right! I didn’t remember her saying that, I just remembered her seeming to try relationships with both genders, but it does make sense for her to decide she was into neither – I know she still had a sex drive though, which is why it was lucky Ultra Car had that extra third arm for dealing with urges. >w>
Pedantic Jerkass
Also, that comic proved that Malaya can indeed smile.
@Raibean I’ve heard it both ways, I thought? But I’m not ace myself. (Well, maybe a little gray-ace.) So if I am in error I apologize. The thing I wanted to express was that she’s shown both sex-repulsion and strictly-Carla-related sex-positivity.
She HAS attraction, in other words. This is why I would tend to call her demisexual. In fact her interest in having sex specifically with Carla’s unique physiology seems to increase dramatically over the course of their relationship, from her stating that she’s glad they get to opt out of ridiculous kissing to her saying here that she feels a “need” for Carla.
I mean, of course it’s Willis’s comic, and we aren’t living inside Malaya’s head, so maybe she would never use any of these words to describe herself.
But it seems consistent with her previous incarnation, which definitely was not “straight”.
timemonkey
Malaya never claimed to be straight, what she said was that having relationships with men never worked and then later that she wasn’t a lesbian.
thejeff
I don’t know, she seemed pretty happy making out with the guy in the crossover, until she figured out who he was.
A much better reaction there than her attempt with Leslie.
@thejeff: I think Malaya would know better than us outside observers. She agrees with Carla that all human parts are gross, and though she was literally rebounding with the Multiplex MC immediately after her failed relationship with Leslie (which kind of messes with your emotions a lot and sometimes makes you consider both sex and relationships you normally wouldn’t), they never actually had sex.
@timemonkey that was my memory too but she does actually say “guess I’m straight after all.” And then tries to go out with Ken before immediately ditching him for a misanthropic guy who she then fails to actually get it on with. Personality clash, as far as we can tell, but like I said linking the comic above Malaya later revised that to not interested in anyone but Carla.
IIRC she even specifically says she thinks genitals are gross, but I’m not there yet in my reread. She does agree with Carla that sex is generally icky, at least.
I think he mean “Spiderman and Deadpool rule separately on their own.”
But seriously, Spiderpool? That sounds like a nightmare.
Like, a in-ground pool filled with spiders, all crawling over eachother and such.
Ohh, and a bunch of webs at the bottom so you’re trapped if you ever fall in!

Or “The rules for Spider-Man and Deadpool”

Wasn’t a pool like that (minus the webs, AFAIK) in one of the first life action Asterix movies?
Lucy probably doesn’t like comic books in this universe either.
In SP! she liked Teen Titans, the cartoon, then tried to pick up comic books and found dead-eyed fresh-off-the-New ’52 Starfire in a genuinely terrible costume enjoying nothing of life.
Here too she is probably into the movies or one of the cartoons, not the comics.
OK I’m obviously not up enough on DC myself. She is completely a fan of Young Justice the cartoon. Not any of the movies, because… neither Robin nor Kid Flash has been in them yet. Lol.

Speaking of Doug Walker, this is a translation of what Marcie is saying to Lucy in panel 3, for those few who might need such.

How do you get Scott McNeil from Lanipator?

Well, Scott was the voice for Piccolo in the actual dub, so it could just be a shoutout to him.

OK I know why people keep saying this. It is after all what Malaya first said after she kissed Leslie.
