Blow things up

  1. I misread that first panel as “I think if I wanted to blow things up with my mom, I’d have sexed Sarah.”

    1. I misread it as “I think if I wanted to blow up my mom, I’d have texted Sarah”. Which I consider also plausible (although not as good a choice as Ruth).

          1. Oh man, I forgot this happened! So glad I decided to start rereading DoA. I’m in July 2018 right now.

      1. Ruth said she was going to, but it was in a last panel, and last panels are often punchlines exaggerated for comedic effect, ie, broken promises that we’d get to see somebody suplex Carol.

      2. On one hand, she often made over the top threats about taking femurs. On the other hand, she did suplex Blaine in strip.

    1. Carol fears nothing, she has the power of god and anime* on her side.

*”Anime,” in this case, being eighteen years’ worth of Joyce’s childhood drawings and the emotional manipulation potential thereof.

    2. well, not afraid enough to where she’d still show up even if she didn’t have to actually get past ruth this time but depending on the parents they’ll always find a way to worm themselves into a kids lives unless they literally move halfway across the country or file a restraining order

  2. Aww this sweet moments is likely going to be ruined as soon as Carol returns. That or the comic shift to Dotty or Sal and Walky’s dilemma with their parents.

    1. If you mangle it enough you can get Joe, Joyce, and Dorthy into Joyrathy. And multiple wives is very biblical so her mom can’t even object.

    2. “this is my girlfriend, joyce. and this is joyce’s girlfriend, dorothy”

Tho tolerance of shenanigans and dealing with close proximity aside i can imagine a handful of the cast all moving in w/ each other even if they aren’t all together

  3. That’s a good sign! This is a cornerstone of me and my boyfriend’s relationship.Long live annoying each other!

And yes, these two are cute.

  4. “I think if I wanted to blow things up with my mom, I’d have texted Sarah.”

…what, have you lost your phone?

    1. i’m sure she’ll walk back in at one point but idk if carol is planning on ‘staying the weekend’ like walky’s/sal’s parents are

  5. Have we ever seen Joe’s mom? Like at all ever? Do we know anything about her beyond that Richard cheated on her?

    1. On-panel? No, like I think maybe in a patreon one or something, but I don’t recall us seeing her on-screen yet, just like Danny on the phone with her.

    2. Only in a patreon strip. She was telling a friend how proud she was of 12 year old Joe for being kind, courteous and reading philosophy.

And then puberty happened and he ended up a lot like his dad, to which she commented “Oh no.”

    1. I feel like the house even being sold is something of a shoe drop as it is, but there’s probably going to be some other stuff, like if this is her way of just spiting Hank, or if she is leaning into all of the religion even harder due to her shittiness making her double down on it.

There’s also stuff like “What if she finds out about Jocelyn, or Joyce does? Maybe we meet Jordan finally? Will John come into the picture and be shitty? Is he still in India by now?”

      1. does he actually live in india? or doing ‘volunteer’ work there, i would’ve assumed it was just that the wedding happened in india

          1. He’s leaving in January, the month the comic is currently in. I don’t think we’ve been told if anyone went to the wedding in India, or if anyone has met Christi. They (or just he, if Christi isn’t real) might be grifting missionary money.

      2. Or leaning into all of the religion even harder because it’s all that’s left of her life. Her children are all out on their own and/or avoiding her; she just split with her husband, who now despises what she’s become; we know of no friends or occupation outside of church.

    1. If I remember correctly, it’s when she and Becky went home a while back. Before the time-skip, and I believe in-between the two major incidents with Becky’s dad (after he’d come to take her out of school and went to jail, but before he teamed up with Amber’s dad Blaine and then both of them got killed).

      1. Correct, yeah, when Joyce returned home and had found things had changed, both in people being shitty to Becky and Joyce having grown into a young woman who doesn’t swallow up the bullshit people feed her as much anymore.

    1. Joe’s the only one who’s been able to really, really make Joyce smile like the days of old in a long time, so yeah. :3

  6. I’m thinking back to the Walkyverse moment when Joyce tried to seduce Joe & he didn’t take her up on it. He had the same protective instinct toward her there that I see in him here. I remember being like “huh! Joyce & Joe!?” — but knowing it wasn’t quite right for them (& knowing Joyce & Walky were in the cards!). Now I get to have them together & right for each other! Thanks, Willis!

  7. That’s my weakness! A cute person grinning at me and saying they like annoying me!

Dang, if I were Joe I’d be in deep here. Mind you I think he already is, so same hat I guess?

  8. I’m half-expecting Carol to forcefully separate them when she comes out of the bathroom, telling them to “save room for Jesus”.

And that’s when Joyce reaches her breaking point.

  9. Idk how you do it, but this feels _real_, like people actually act/react like this. And loving that joyce smile.

These past 2-3 strips also, in the best possible sense, have a Faye and Bubbles from Questionable Content vibe, to me.
