          This comic seems pretty static, personality-wise, but it hasn’t been very long. Danny’s gone from lovey-dovey to emo to super-geek and then back to emo, but everyone else (except Walky) is pretty unchanged from their first appearance.

          Which is exactly how it should be, seeing as how it’s only been 5 days.

          It often takes week, months or even years for Character development to occur, but considering how slow Comic Time flows in DoA, we might be lucky to see some by the 2050s.

          Yeah, it’s kinda slow, innit? That’s what I like about it actually. In the Comics-that-shall-not-be-named, also by Willis, about a week’s worth of stuff would happen, and then all of a sudden it’s TWO YEARS later, to keep up with real time.

          that sort of time flow makes sense to me though. noteworthy things don’t happen to most people every day. i just see the walkyverse as hitting on the things that are worth exploring. and then when there isn’t much happening, stand alone strips are used to illustrate the passing of time.

    I feel sorry for Joyce but i think that’s because I have a cousin who is exactly like her because her brother kept waking her up in the middle of the night with pictures of other religions saying they were coming after her. Plus her parents (my aunt and uncle) are very over the top christians.

    So did Joyce grow up with her parents telling her that if she wasn’t a good little Christian girl, the nasty Atheists were going to get her?

      Possibly. Likely more a matter of exposure though. I’m sure Atheists have always been talked about as a “next town over” type phenomenon. Something that happens in other places, but not here. To actually encounter one has probably been shocking for her. Gonna be fun to see her reaction when she starts realizing that Dorothy isn’t a lone incident.

      Though as I understand it this school is still situated somewhere in the Bible belt, so I don’t really know how uncommon to think this is. Heck, if there was even just a small percentage of the student body that’s not religiously affiliated I’m sure Joyce would blow a gasket.

      Most well adapted of her class basically means she’s the only member of the group potentially fit for mainstream society. That we’re assuming the rest of her peers would actually crack under the shock of what they’d see here is an indicator for how sheltered we can expect Joyce to be. Just a notch above the sights she’ll behold here being dangerous to her sanity, or such is her Pastor’s hope. Probably a bit of a dice roll involved in that.

      I don’t read this as Joyce judging her at all. She’s scared of Dorothy, sure, because she doesn’t understand her beliefs, but she’s making an effort to connect. This is behavior to be encouraged!

      Man, I’m a Christian and *I* find Dumbiverse Joyce annoying (actually, more like Joyce in general after Joyce and Walky started). I mean, wow, how closed-minded can you get? Then again, quite a few Christians are kind of like Joyce, isolating themselves from anything that might challenge their views and believing that anything that isn’t “Bibley” is wrong. I definitely don’t think non-Christians are right in their beliefs, but I’m not about to hate a person just because he or she is wrong about something. Believe it or not, it’s not a choice between Christianity and common sense; they are actually compatible. It’s just that the portion of the Christian community that is the most verbal also happens to be the most, well, stupid.
