I’m going to assume Joyce has been planning this ever since her chat with Becky last night.
All politics and religion aside Joyce just wasn’t gonna let this get between her and Becky.
ninja_jesus
It would make more sense if this was a more immediate reaction from her recent events with Roz in class. I don’t think she would’ve broken things off if it was never said that she was associated to something that harmed him and others like him.
Keisha
I actually think it’s less a reaction to Roz and more to the whole lecture in general. Initially Joyce looked sad, but when Leslie brought up conversion therapy, her expression changed to angry. Obviously I can’t confirm this, but I feel like that silent panel of her angry, tear-filled face was her realizing that what she was doing was wrong. Then Roz’s rant guilt-tripped her into breaking things off with Ethan immediately instead of waiting until after class.
ChocolateRat
This. She clearly had a strong reaction to the lecture before Roz even talked.
That Damn Rat
Actually I’m pretty sure this has been coming at least since her confession to Dorothy about her and Ethan’s relationship, and probably has been in motion since her choice of Becky over her beliefs, you could really see the cogs turning as her world view realigned there.
I’m pretty sure Joyce has been thinking about this since the scene right before Becky even showed up in the first place, even though all this stuff made her more sure about it. Her previous interaction with Ethan was very awkward, and she seemed to start doubting what she was doing, so she asked God for a sign about what to do. That’s when she ran into Becky.
Kang the Unbalanced
She had the awful, sinking realization that what she had been doing with Ethan was uncomfortably close to conversion therapy. Unwittingly, unintentionally, but still. It’s like the good Jewish lad suddenly realizing that not only is he eating a porkchop sandwich, he’s also wearing a “Belsen Was A Gas” T-shirt.
SteveCharb
“Good Jewish lad” is such goyish phrasing. Call him a mensch.
Gigafreak
…The German word for “human?”
But that should be capitalized, as all German nouns are.
Portmanteaust
The meaning in Yiddish is slightly different to the German. In Yiddish, it specifically means a good man (who is assumed to be Jewish since you’re speaking Yiddish).
Bibulb
No, it was intentionally, but Ethan was also interested and willing. (Not that this makes it BETTER, but at least DIFFERENTLY squicky?)
fogel
Ethan ate a pork chop?
ninja_jesus
That’s true, but I don’t think she’d be as emotional had Roz not pushed her over the limit.
NotPiffany
I think she might have. Joyce doesn’t really do “subtle” or “halfway.” Roz may have pushed up the timetable by less than an hour, but that’s it.
Trust me, you’re not the only one who has trouble with what comes out of your fingers. (That’s me having trouble with what comes out of my fingers, not my having trouble with what comes out of your fingers, to be clear. Although I do reject both notions. Partially because at least one of those is rape [the other is complicated, so I can’t quite decide how to count it] but also because both of those are Sex.)
Change that probably to “likely”. I find that what we do and do not think of as a bad idea on what to post are based on criteria that are already flawed in themselves. Things that need to be said often go unsaid, while things we really shouldn’t say get past the filters.
Ambitious
So… between “probably” and “likely”, which one do you use as the stronger word?
In case anyone can’t remember, Ethan is wondering if Joyce is still mad at him for the whole ‘do you see me as someone you can marry?’ ‘….I really have to get ready’ bit.
Get out of here, Ethan! Can’t you see I don’t want you anymore? Why don’t you go back where you came from? LEAVE ME ALONE!!! (SLAP) Go. GO!
…goodbye, my friend
StClair

Dude, spoilers. Give silent props via internet mind link or congratulate him on the current page, but don’t go “back in time” and confirm predictions in the comments. It’s not cool for the archival readers.
V-Day is still WWII though – either when Donitz surrendered Germany, or when Emperor Hirohito surrendered Japan. And then there are parties! And morally questionable photos of kissing!

Joyce, what has gotten into you?

Something Roz said perhaps?

Sarah also nudged her along.
Oh, and then there was Tiny Thunder’s tiny point:

Not Ryan or Ethan, that’s for sure.
I’m not even sure if I even approve of this joke.
ChocolateRat
You could’ve left the Ryan bit out… Pretty gross.

Agreed

PMHP!!!!
Crazy Dina
Um… I tried to look that up and I think what I got was unrelated. Actual meaning please?
Gigafreak
Acronym for Joyce’s dismayed cry of “Pre-Marital Hanky-Panky!” Dates back to the early days of the other universe.
Crazy Dina
Oh. In that case, Kang, Pre-Marital has NOTHING to do with it.
I tend to stay away from the slipshine… even if there are supposed to be good story lines on there. 🙁
gwalla
“The other universe” means the Walkyverse, not Slipshine. The DoA Slipshine stuff is in-universe (just NSFW & not essential to the story).
Rycan
Protip: If you review your nascent post, and think “This may not be a good idea”, you’re probably right.

Probably?
(Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

I think it’s likely that you could have.

I don’t know why, but i imagine an old yeller scene coming up.
joyce: go on! go on you!!
ethan: whimper whimper.

Er, that’s not how Old Yeller ended.
Harry and the Hendersons, maybe?

Joyce: “I can’t be with you anymore boy. *Sniff* Y-you’ll be going to a big farm.”

And then she shoots him behind the shed. Because he was hers, so it had to be her.

I sincerely hope that Joyce at least knows that there are better ways to break up with a boyfriend than a slug through his cranium.
Doctor_Who
She’s never had one before, so you need to expect a few mistakes/murder charges.

why of course, Doctor

Ahh, Valentine’s Day…
Gigafreak
This is a bittersweet breakup.
As opposed to the previous Valentine’s Day, which had a bitterbitter breakup.

Holy cripes, I can’t believe that was a full year ago.

Clearly Willis is a HUGE fan of Valentine’s Day.

I am well aware of the double meaning, hence the reference to this old VD ad.

Those were V-E Day and V-J Day, respectively.
