        It is a myth, yes. Birds don’t have a good sense of smell at all so can’t smell that you have touched their eggs, nest or babies.

          I don’t believe so, to my knowledge it has always been used in reference to birds specifically, usually around when they are nesting and laying eggs to keep people from taking them home.

          With mammals the mother can reject her own children for seemingly no reason at all (farmers see this with things like horses, sheep, cows and goats) when sense of smell isn’t even how they recognise each other while others do use sense of smell but wouldn’t necessarily abandon their children because of their other senses used like hearing to recognise their voices.

          There have been lionesses that kidnap or befriend baby antelope; wolves, cats, dogs and monkeys have adopted, protected and raised young children that have been abandoned or neglected severely in the very rare instances that feral children raised by animals actually do exist; other mammals can also be convinced to raise others as well – dogs can be convinced to raise pretty much anything.

          So while a sense of smell may contribute, it definitely isn’t the end all be all for mammals either, but I have never seen it used for mammals, only birds.

          With mammals the main problem with touching their babies is that they may not actually be in distress or abandoned at all even if they appear to be to us since several animals hide their children then go off hunting and you don’t know if the parents are actually nearby or not. More skittish individuals may abandon their babies if you touch them because it makes it seem like danger is nearby, but others may just go ahead and spend energy relocating them all.

          Nature is never perfectly predictable but in general helping baby birds or eggs back into a nest is fine if the parents aren’t around but you shouldn’t go around touching every baby animal you see as you don’t know if they are actually in danger or not unless you actually monitor the situation over a period of time and look up signs on what might indicate they have been abandoned.

        Yeah, it’s just a way to keep kids from handling them, because they’re less likely to be gentle in ways that won’t do harm to the bird.

    I feel like this is a friendship moment, not that it excludes romance, but that it does not imply romantic intentions and would be the same regardless of what Eef felt.

      As much as it has platonic friendship playing a powerful role in this, I think that the romantic overtones really play a strong part in what makes this moment powerful. Ethan has never had a relationship he could really invest himself in, and Danny is re-imagining his identity in part because Ethan’s positive presence in his life helped change his view of who he is and what he deserves, in regard to relationships in general and his sexuality in specific.

      And yet, despite the strong chemistry and impact they have together, they’re barring themselves from being in a relationship. They’re both sacrificing their own desires and feelings in order to protect someone else who they both care about. They’re clearly good for each other, and they both know it, but they aren’t allowing themselves to experience what would be an incredibly positive experience in their life.

      So this moment, where they’re comfortable and intimate and friendly, is a glimpse into what-could-be, and a fairly public one at that. It lets them almost experience something that they aren’t letting themselves have. And yeah, they are friends. And there’s nothing inherently romantic about falling asleep on your friend’s lap. But in this context, with these people? The underlying romance is too big of a factor to not be one of this moment’s defining features.

        Hmm that’s not how I was reading it – yes the tension is there but I was seeing it as more of a situation where ethan was enjoying the platonic intimacy without the typical concerns of things getting misinterpreted or carried away into their romantic feelings for one another. Like They have been putting extra distance between themselves to avoid temptation, but the circumstances here allow them to be close without those added tones. If he wasn’t so worried about accidentally causing problems for a lot of people by sliding into a romantic relationship, this is the way Ethan would act. Maybe you are right, but that wasn’t my reading.

          Well first, we don’t know that they’ve been avoiding each other and, at the least, they’re still “really good friends” and regularly text each other.

          Second, I disagree with the idea that they’re avoiding temptation.

          If the whole point to this is that they want to be together but can’t, then that makes Amber an antagonist to getting them together, and I don’t believe that’s the intent. They would like to date, but Amber is more important, rather than them actively longing for each other but putting themselves on hold for that harpy.

          Amber never asked them for this. They didn’t have to do it, but they chose to wait because they were worried about her. They shouldn’t wait forever, but it was still kind of them to think of her.

          See, that’s what I mean. If they want to be together but can’t because of Amber, then that mean Amber is a burden getting in the way of their happiness, and I’m hoping that’s not the case.

          My read on this is that they both thinking dating would be nice, but they don’t want to because Amber is more important. That’s different from putting off something you want to do because of someone else.

    I’m not gonna lie, all of the shipping talk in the comments is a tad…unnerving? I mean, I definitely relate most of the time. Am gay; love guys loving guys.

    But in this moment we’re being let in to see a really private, tender moment. This is so soft, and so pure, and there’s this underlying fear in the scene with Ethan being afraid of being seen by others. It’s such a private moment to be privy to, one that has a quiet sort of power to it.

    And the people enthusiastically and loudly proclaiming how much they ship this feels kind of… off. Like, I know that plenty of people in this comment section really relate to this moment, and honestly appreciate it. But with how many people fetishize queer men and they’re relationship, and with how a lot of fandom culture has kind of commodified queer relationships into this thing that you can consume, it really gives me some freaky vibes.

    If this were a big kiss moment or a sly and flirty moment that’d be different. Those are moments where cheering and commentating are encouraged and expected. But this moment isn’t one of those. It’s private, tender, and soft. I know that if I’d opened up about having a moment like this to someone, and they responded like I’d just made out with a celebrity on the Kiss-o-Vision at some football game, I’d feel betrayed.

    I’m not saying that one can’t cheer or joke about how much you love gay couples in media – I do it all of the time. But there’s a large crowd out there who loves to take in queer men’s love for each other and consume it like a popular new song, no matter how uncomfortable it might make the men in question, or how important and private that moment was.

    Now these ARE fictional men, so it’s not like you’re hurting anyone’s feelings; I’m just saying, I can’t tell the difference between some of y’all and the folks who shout, “Yaoi!” at gay couples on the bus. It’s not necessarilly that you’re bad, I’m just eerily creeped out by the similarities, and don’t know if I’m the only one.

        That’s kinda the point I’m at. Them liking each other has been showing positive and adorable results in both of them, and they should get to be together to bask in the adorable positive glow that is them together.

        I have made some jokes, but I honestly get a warm fuzzy feeling in my brain when I see them happy together.

      I don’t necessarily mind the people cheering them on as a couple, even if unreasonably. Because that’s pretty normal for ships, regardless of gender. The thing about this one that’s bothering me is just that the cheers don’t sync up with the context.

      Normally, this moment would make people say, “Aww…” But instead it’s more of a, “FUCK HIM NOW” kinda vibe. Whether or not that’s weird in response to normal flirting, it at least is somewhat the same across sexualities. Taking private, tender moments and fervently turning them into sexytime fuel is mostly exclusive to mlm moments.
