      The least realistic thing about DoA is that everyone seems to have their “look” figured out, and actually makes an effort to conform to it.

      Still, school only started a few weeks ago. Couple more years of this strip and we’ll start seeing people wearing pajamas to class and the same shirt three days in a row, because it was either use their pocket change for ramen or the laundromat. Just like a REAL college.

        Not hard to see where she gets it…the world does have a tendency to turn its back on anyone who’s different (especially trans people), so a lot of us end up with a “f*ck the world” attitude.

        This strip is the first one I’ve ever seen in which I saw Carla as at all likable. I found the whole super-intellectual bit of patter in panel 3, followed by the honest and kinda rueful comment in panel 4, charming and believable.

        My problem with Carla is that I didn’t think she was characterized as wanting to be hated; in fact, the character is portrayed as wanting Sal to like her to the point that Carla hangs out with Sal’s friends. This strip humanizes her enough that I can see that coming through for real, and it makes her kind of vulnerable in a way we’ve never seen before.

        Of course, #damnyouwillis probably doesn’t intend that, but I’m sure I’ll find that out soon enough.

    It’s a shame this comic has a floating timeline. If it were set during the like six month period where those sneakers with built in wheels were cool, they’d suit Carla perfectly.

          I have seen awesome music being made with Tesla Coils, Too many to link, but if you search things like Cymatics, Tesla coil music, etc, there’s some pretty cool stuff…

          Mind you, if you start putting things like Hello Kitty stickers or other stuff like that, or worse, shaping the top like that stuff, then I’d imagine a few people would be put off…

        She’s a bit obnoxious, but I start to feel that the other characters treat her with way more disdain than her behavior makes her deserve. It start to look less than the coping mechanism with a jerk with saw over in Shortpacked, and more of a mild case of bullying.

        Seriously, has she had any appearance at all without anyone (mostly the ringleader of the gang, Sal) pointing out that she’s not welcome?

      Well, it posts at exactly 12:00am ET. I tend to be using my computer, and sometime shortly after midnight will just hit my “Comics” bookmark folder to open all the comics for my nightly read.
      In terms of having something to say so quickly, roughly 1000 people now are on Willis’s patreon and thus have access to tomorrow’s comic today. Thus they have up to 24 hours to think of the snark they’ll post at 12:01.

      You know, this brings up a point. For some reason, everyone in Willis’s comics look really short to me for some reason. I don’t know if it’s the stylization or the environment or the fact that this was the first one I discovered, college kids just look short to me even if they’re taller (because they look young, and I’m not past the young=short part of my perceptive development), and so I extrapolated that to other comics, but Carla being relatively tall makes her look, to me, for some reason, comfortably average.

        Maybe Willis just draws everything else really tall because of his perspective. He apparently is a short guy, and short guys see objects as taller.

        It has to do with head diameter. Willis’ art style uses above average head sizes which means that proportionally the only people who look normal are the tallest people in his comic. The generally rule for realistic art is 7 1/2 heads = average height. However almost all comics and cartoons throw this rule out the window because bigger heads are easier to animate and show emotion with.

        Just eyeballing the first panel of this strip it I’d say that Marcie is 5 heads tall, Malaya 5 1/2, Carla is 6, Sal is 6, and Walkyis 6 1/4. That puts everyone in this scene below average proportionally.

        I want to say that this is not criticism. I find emotional connection to be a key appeal of DoA and I would sacrifice neither that nor production speed in order to get a little more “realism.”

      Right up above you. References UltraCar’s third middle finger in Shortpacked, but could also be constructed as a reference to Carla being a transwoman. I’m on the fence if this is problematic or funny.

          To anyone not looking for insult, that interpretation is entirely nonsensical, just from a logical application sense. Which is likely why Willis didn’t even consider it.
          Given that it’s an intuitive interpretation to anyone who is previously familiar with Carla, and that Willis’s tastelessness has thus far been limited to butt jokes, I think we can safely say the chances of that being a valid interpretation are about nil.

    There is a way to have a third middle finger. An old childish trick, but a slightly impressive one nonetheless if done suddenly before people realize what they’re seeing.

    Hold your hands up, palms facing you. Keeping them parallel, overlap your right hand in front of your left, with your right pinky between your left middle and ring finger. Curl down your fingers, interlocking the overlapping right and left fingers, leave only the following fingers up: Right Middle, Left Middle, and Left Ring.

    Lol this reminds me and one of my best friends in HighSchool had this running thing where she stick up her middle finger i stick up two and she says she stick’s up 2 middle fingers and something else between her legs and id say id stick’s up 2 middle fingers and something else between my legs and this happened several times a week

    In my head; Sal, Marcie, Carla, and Malaya all fall far the same dark skinned painter, which leads to a series of event that constantly point him on a crossroads of choosing between them from time to time. Yet he always is tryingnto treat all four equally every chance he gets.

          Marcie is canonically bi, Carla is asexual-homoromantic-trangender, Malaya “wants to f*** whatever that is” (from the other universe, but still) and Sal is most likely straight, maybe bi, I dunno.

        Has Malaya sexuality even been revealed in the dumbiverse, I don’t remember reading anything on it not any of them other then Sal. If not then all everyone is really doing is just making assumptions based on the walkyverse, which DOA isn’t connected too; some things changed, some things remained the same. This is why I started off with, “in my head.”

    Carla has always been my favorite, ever since the personality started firmly developing in Shortpacked [which, basically, was around the time Malaya started poking at Ultra Car, and UC started reconsidering their view on humans].

    Unfortunately, exceptionally low screen time in DoA has kept me from voting for her in the polls- which may just be my misinterpretation of what the polls are supposed to accomplish, but she hasn’t had enough visibility to really make as much of a ‘favorite’ impact as others :X

    Of course, if given the option, Riley’d definitely be my favorite DoA character- an adorable-but-not-annoying character to contrast all the snarky ones?
    It’s great 😛

    Mr Willis, I’ve had a random thought. Any possibility of a convention plot line? Not asking if there definitely will or won’t be, but it’s a thought…

    Been to 1 or 2, enjoyed them myself, & got to thinking while reading this who on here would go to one. Amber, Danny, Ethan & maybe Walky would definitely be the type to go, while I’m sure Joyce would be tempted if Monkey Master & Head Alien was mentioned. If Joyce goes, I can see Becky going too, plus a few others may be dragged along by others.

    As an added bonus, maybe even have them meet the creator of Monkey Master & Head Alien, a man by the name of David Willis…
