The least realistic thing about DoA is that everyone seems to have their “look” figured out, and actually makes an effort to conform to it.
Still, school only started a few weeks ago. Couple more years of this strip and we’ll start seeing people wearing pajamas to class and the same shirt three days in a row, because it was either use their pocket change for ramen or the laundromat. Just like a REAL college.
That’s why you wear hoodies. It’s socially acceptable to wear a jacket or sweater or hoodie for days on end, and it hides the fact that you’re wearing that Animal House ‘COLLEGE’ t-shirt for the 3rd time this week.

The use of a Walky Gravatar for this comment makes me happy.
Not hard to see where she gets it…the world does have a tendency to turn its back on anyone who’s different (especially trans people), so a lot of us end up with a “f*ck the world” attitude.
This strip is the first one I’ve ever seen in which I saw Carla as at all likable. I found the whole super-intellectual bit of patter in panel 3, followed by the honest and kinda rueful comment in panel 4, charming and believable.
My problem with Carla is that I didn’t think she was characterized as wanting to be hated; in fact, the character is portrayed as wanting Sal to like her to the point that Carla hangs out with Sal’s friends. This strip humanizes her enough that I can see that coming through for real, and it makes her kind of vulnerable in a way we’ve never seen before.
Of course, #damnyouwillis probably doesn’t intend that, but I’m sure I’ll find that out soon enough.
It’s a shame this comic has a floating timeline. If it were set during the like six month period where those sneakers with built in wheels were cool, they’d suit Carla perfectly.
Stop using the stoppers then. Also, try two sets of two at first, to reduce how much balancing you do. That should severely reduce your chance of falling.
Without wheels, Carla is reduced to ‘mingling with the common folk’.
Last time we saw Carla, she’d almost collided with a reckless Danny. Perhaps such a close near-interaction with Danny caused a malfunction in her skates.
Solenoid
Caught flat-footed like the rest of the hoi polloi, huh?

So is Carla studying robotics so she can build EXTRA middle fingers like “The Human Middle Finger” or
Crazy Dina
Yes. For her chest.
Crazy Dina
Edit: Yes. For her chest flap.
Crazy Dina
Doctor Who! Jen Aside stole your TARDIS KEY!
Doctor_Who
Yes, but not until tomorrow, so I have plenty of time.
Crazy Dina
How did you know it was tomorrow? Did she just return it? Yiesh, time is wierd.
l33tmaster
dude his a time lord time is like a rug or somin to him lol
Crazy Dina
Why would anyone want a wibbily wobbly spherical rug?
Doctor_Who
That rug really tied the room together.
The Master
It really does.
Crazy Dina
O.O Now I want to see that room.
Kryss LaBryn
I thought it was like a rubber sheet.
Khaner
Malaya, I can see you staring.
Taigan
Anyone else zoom in on the first panel to check if she and Carla were holding hands? … Just me?
Thomas64
Well I have now… 😀

HeySo
Seconded.
Plasma Mongoose
Thirded!
John
I dunno, I think Malaya may be in her pajamas already.
The least realistic thing about DoA is that there’s only one person on campus named “Jennifer”.
Disloyal Subject
Are (competent) caped vigilantes more common on college campuses that I realized?
Crazy Dina
Nah. They only make up 30% of the college vigilante population.
John
They’re more common than campuses with only one Jennifer!
dreadedseamonster
As a Jennifer I can confirm this. -___-
Tenn
Oh, there are more Jennifers on campus, but they all have nicknames that sound like real names.
No Name
Like “Billie”?
barefootbiker
I think you’re forgetting about Walky.
Killjoy
Not sure I’d consider wearing shorts so torn up that the pockets are sticking out at the bottom “stylin”.
ahecht
Clearly you haven’t been around teenage girls.
HeySo
That WOULD come from a Joe avatar..
Dr. Smart
I really need some skates now
Plasma Mongoose
How does one travel on a skate anyhow?
Doctor_Who
Haven’t you played Super Mario Galaxy?
nothri
Not very far if you hunt crocodiles.
I’m sorry. Too soon?
Crazy Dina
Too soon for what? I’m missing something.
Plasma Mongoose
nothri was referring to Steve Urwin who discovered the hard way that a stingray’s stinger can be quite lethal.
Thomas64
*Steve Irwin
Kryss LaBryn
Now I’m sad. 🙁
Kelly
How did you misspell his name? Aren’t you an Aussie?
Plasma Mongoose
Yes but I just went by how it was pronounced rather than check to see if I spelt it right.
Plasma Mongoose
It turns out that stingrays don’t like foreplay.
Crazy Dina
Balance. Lots of balance.
caramelundqueer
Carla’s outfit is pretty damn cute.
Mr k
Pity her personality isn’t.

At least she does have a good sense of humour…

If the majority of humanity is going to treat you like a freak or a joke, it has a tendency to put a bit of a chip on the shoulder, fo sho.

And that’s why Carla is my life role model. <3_<3

Regalli
They come in and out of fashion every so often.
At least I see commercials for them every like two years or so.
onethousandnames
I wanted some of those so badly. And I don’t know why, because I can’t rollerskate to save my life.
Kryss LaBryn
Me too, because I want to be able to skate, but I will fall down. But the great thing about these things is that you can put your feet down.
Now, if only they have them in women’s size 9… :/
Random832
You know what would be nice? Remote-controlled wheel brakes.
Crazy Dina
Stop using the stoppers then. Also, try two sets of two at first, to reduce how much balancing you do. That should severely reduce your chance of falling.
Screwball
Well, they were walking over grass, which those wheeled shoes don’t like, so she could be wearing a pair…
…And are you the same Doctor Who they sing about in this clip?
BobaFett2
I love Carla more with every strip.
Plasma Mongoose
Or in this case with every stripe! ^_^

Carla and Malaya? Now that I’ve read shortpacked…
When’s Carla going to get pies?
Anyway – are we going to learn how Marcie lost her voice soon?
Mr k
Sal tore out her vocal cords.
