In the first episode, Faz and Joe team up in River City where, having discovered the newly installed pool table in the billiard parlor, break into song in the city center. The Rivercityzians Tweet out video of the song, and the POTUS flies in to bankroll Joe’s and Faz’s plan to establish a River City beauty pageant, to be judged by the boys of the town. This, according to Faz will help to develop the boys into Woke young men—just like their hero, Faz.
I mean, I want to punch Joe in the faaace, but now, to do so, I would need to touch Faz. Either to shove him out of the way, or to simply punch through him, I would have to touch Faz, and that makes me stop.
Would Faz actually be considered Joe’s step-brother? He’s tangentially related to Amber because they share a (step-)father, but Joe would fall into Amber’s family via his dad marrying Amber’s mom. So Faz would be his… brother twice removed? Or something?
I’m also really confused about this. If Faz is Amber’s step brother, they aren’t blood relatives. So Amber’s dad married Faz’s mom, or has been living with her long enough that Amber is expected to consider Faz her step brother. If Amber’s mom marries Joe’s dad, Amber and Joe will be step-siblings but Faz and Joe will be completely unrelated. In fact, even if Faz was Amber’s half brother instead of step, he still wouldn’t be any relation to Joe because Faz and Amber share a different half.
Well, Amber is more familiar with the details of the situation than we are. What if there are things we don’t know or assumptions we are making based on the previous universe.
thejeff
More likely she’s just speaking loosely.
If we were making assumptions based on the previous universe we would be assuming they were half-siblings and damned if I know what that would make Joe and Faz.
ozzi
Family defines it the way it does. I have had people adopt me as their brother who were friends before.
“Once removed,” “twice removed,” etc., are technical terms relating to differences in generations. (Your dad’s cousins are your cousins once removed. Insert Henny Youngman joke here.)
I don’t know if there yet exists a nomenclature for blended families that have been formed through multiple blends. But if Richard and Stacy get married, then Stacy will Joe’s stepmother in addition to being Faz’s stepmother. “Stepbrother” is easier, if less precise, than “stepmother’s stepson.”
Nope, Stacy doesn’t get to be Faz’ stepmother because her ex married Faz’ mom.
Is there a word for your step-siblings’ step-siblings? They are not related by blood to any same person, but somehow ….
I always thought cousin once removed was the same as second degree cousins, e.g. the same generation as you, but the common ancestors are the great-grandparents?
No Name
No, the removed refers to the number of generations that have been “removed” from one side of the divide (how many generation before a common ancestor), although the way the numbering works (the smaller generation number is used), it’s more like adding. This video helps explain it.
Arian
Someone asked me recently if you were considered to be related to your cousin’s cousin, e.g. your father’s brother’s son’s mother’s sister’s daughter.
I said no, and he said good, since apparently he rather likes his cousin’s cousin. 🙂
That said, a guy friend of mine shares a mother with woman A, who shares a father with woman B.
It’s been suggested to him that he’s not related by blood to his half-sister’s half-sister, so there’s nothing to stop him dating woman B. But he still *feels* related to her.
I’m teminded of an episode of “Asvenrurers in Wonderland” where the Mad Hatter revealed that he had an evil cousin named the Copy-cat Hatter (played by the same actor);
HATTER: He’s my second cousin, twice removed.
ALICE: Twice removed?
HATTER: Yeah, we kicked him out of the family once, but he came back, so we had to kick him out again!
cbwroses
I’m reminded of the episode of Animaniacs where they went to Anvilania and Yakko became king.
There was even a song about how he was related to the former king.
Liquid Len
And now I have Perry Coma stuck in my head singing the Anvilania anthem. Thanks! 🙂
While that wouldn’t be the legal term that applies, whether they would have a sibling-esque relationship depends on the relationship between Stacy and Blaine. If the two are still on cordial terms and do joint family holidays and such, which is a thing in some cases, then at the very least, Joe and Faz would be expected to develop some kind of siblingish, or at the very least cousin-ish relationship. That being said, Joe is an adult, so he might be immune to that expectation.
Honestly, I’m not quite sure what’s going on here. What kind of relationship they have.
Faz and Amber are treating each other as pretty well acquainted step-siblings, which wasn’t the impression I’d gotten from his first appearance – though that might have been just that she was so focused on Blaine she didn’t have time to acknowledge Faz.
When she first sees Blaine she says she hasn’t seen him in years, so when did this sibling type relationship have a chance to develop?
begbert2
I read their relationship more as cop(vigilante) and criminal – Amber considers Faz scum that it’s her responsibility to keep in custody and out of trouble, and Faz considers Amber little more than an impediment to his fun.
Sam
Same. I don’t see it as them being ‘well-acquainted’ at all because Faz blatantly states creepy things repeatedly out loud within five minutes of being seen. Most people related to such a person in some way even if not by blood would try to a) control such a person and b) try to get them back to whoever should be in charge of them.
I see it more like how uncles try to reign in nephews or older siblings try to reign in younger siblings or babysitters try to reign in kids generally – it doesn’t signify closeness or knowing each other well, just that the more mature/older one doesn’t want the younger/immature one to run rampant and bother other people.
thejeff
I’m not suggesting they’re close friends or anything, just that Amber’s had sufficient exposure to Faz to know what to expect and to feel somewhat responsible. Exactly, like an older sibling as you suggest.
But if Amber really hasn’t seen Blaine in years, where did they pick up that sibling relationship? And how old was Faz years ago? Was he already a sexually creepy perv then?
This is more to do with being an engineering major, than anything else. We use to take turns, during Trig class, with the electrical people, staring daggers because this part of the class was “all their fault”, while the other group did the work with blindfolds on, behind their backs. Meanwhile, the math majors kept their heads down, hoping that we wouldn’t realize that it was really all their fault.
I don’t think they did. I did an archive binge on Shortpacked at one point, and Joe’s not really in it super often, I don’t recall him interacting with Faz. Mostly brushes with Ultra Car and a handful of others.
if I recall correctly Joe didn’t have brushes with Ultra Car so much as he invented Ultra Car and I think she even refers to him as her father because of it.
…oh Cheese. Now I’ve just pictured Carla calling Joe “Daddy” and I’m somewhat terrified. O.O;
Well, Shortpacked Joe is actually DOA Joe’s father, so you’d need to picture Carla calling Joe’s dad Daddy. Which, since Carla has been established as having a well off supportive family, is not something that we have to worry about.
MacBone
What? I don’t think so. SP! Joe is the Joe who was roommates with Danny in Roomies! DoA is an alternate universe of the Roomies!/IW/SP universe.
thejeff
Yeah and SP!Joe has universe travel tech. It’s an amusing idea that’s been brought up before.
Certainly not canon.
If nothing else, SP!Joe’s long developed past the stage of creep Richard is likely still in.
Joe has practiced for years at being shallow and sleazy, which is not quite the same as being creepy, so even with his later start Faz has been able to make up ground and surpass him by being focused on the true goal.

wouldn’t have expected Faz to concede that any other man was as attractive as (or more than) Faz

He hasn’t.

Faz recognizes that Joe is nearly Faz’s equal in body-type. But Joe is definitely not Faz’s equal in charming and attractive personality.

…..
Absolutely nothing can go wrong with this plan, and I unreservedly endorse it.

I’m actually kind of hoping Joe realises how creepy he can be from seeing Faz’s behavior.

The last time Joe was in Comp-Sci, Rachel threatened to castrate him. What is he doing there?
Did she accept his later apology to the point where she actually lets him hang out with her?

Yeah, he wouldn’t be Joe’s stepbrother, exactly, but I think Amber’s not sweating the nomenclature too much.

“Removed” in a family-history sense means differences between generations. Sort of like “great” but different.
