Five? Try six figures. Everyone in congress gets paid 100k+. Google says 174k right now. All tax payer funded.
Reltzik
Well, yes, she’s probably stacked up a nice bank account if she hasn’t been blowing it all as she goes. But even now that she’s retired, she could make a good deal of money doing speeches and writing books.
Michael Haneline
iirc: All members of congress get a 100% pension. So if she made 174k a year as a member of congress, she’ll get paid 174k a year in “retirement” until the day she dies.
Geneseepaws
For basically doing nothing but saying ‘No’ to the other side. Essentially nothing
Agemegos
That’s per year, not per speech.
When she becomes an ex-congresscritter with a bit of notoriety Robin might be expected to make money in future making paid speeches. She’s not going to rack up $153 million in speaking fees, because she’s not that famous. But lots of people who are only kind of famous get mid-five-figure per speech fees. https://www.lovemoney.com/gallerylist/64364/people-making-a-fortune-from-public-speaking

It’s honestly not that much for needing to own 2 houses (1 in DC $$$) and be away from your family so much. Their millions are made from investments, not salaries. Which is why we need to institute a serious inheritance tax that kicks in at 1mil or so. Investments compound wealth inequality hardcore
There’s a reason the two orientations are called portrait and landscape.
brionl
True. And since it’s just Robin, it should be in portrait mode. When I’m video chatting with somebody my phone is in portrait.
When I’m taking pictures of the kittens being cute, I use landscape.
BTW, anybody in the SF Bay area want to adopt a couple kittens?
Leorale
I’m on the opposite coast and can’t adopt kittens, but I would still like a link to the adorable kittens, please
Miri
In the UK but also happy to view kittens being cute!
Peter
In Denmark, and ditto on kitten videos.
Devi
cat tax!
Spiracular
I know someone in Berkeley who’s looking into adopting a kitten?
Tell you what, if you link something with adorable kitten pics that’s also contactable, I’ll tell them to message you there.
Aelia
I know someone who is looking for *a* kitten in the East Bay. 🙂 If they’re kittens that can reasonably be split up, lmk.
ego
robin’s portrait is fine, but her landscape is way better.
McBogue
Yeah, her…hills and valleys… are a sight to behold.
What makes them weird is the way whenever they get replayed on KnikKnak or BoobTube they get put into landscape mode with an out-of-focus version of what you’re seeing on either side just to use up the space.
Needfuldoer
The least sintrusive way to meld a 4:3 clip in the middle of a 16:9 video is to stretch a blurry copy of it across the full field, then superimpose a copy on to in its native aspect ratio. It’s a lot less jarring than black pillars suddenly appearing in the middle of otherwise 16:9 content.
But yeah, with social media vertical video it literally looks like blurry copies, and that doesn’t blend as well.
Wouldn’t it be funny if Willis had Manley react like Jack Lemmon in “The Great Race”?
I am king! I am the king!
No, I’m not! I didn’t beat him! He let me win!
I can’t win this way! I can only win one way: My way! They let me win!
I can’t win your way. You cheated. You cheated. You cheated! I hate you!
I refuse to accept! I won’t win any way but my way. You ruined my reputation! Do you hear? You, I hate!
I refuse to accept!
I challenge you to – another race!!
Bicycle Bill
this should have gone at the end in its own thread. We REALLY could use an edit function on this comment board.
She’s conceding the presidential race, but that doesn’t mean she’s resigning from the position she already had does it? So she should have just as much income as before, minus campaign spending.
She hasn’t been running for a new office – she’s been running for reelection to her existing seat in Congress. So conceding the race means she does remain in office until the new term begins in January, but then she’s out of a job. (But it also means she has a few months drawing a salary as a lame duck to line up a new gig).
Xenocide
Ah, I have no idea at which point I lost track of the particular race she was racing in!
Because she’s giving Becky what she wanted. And doing the right thing. Robin can’t push for the things her supporters want anymore. She’s walking away because it’s the right thing to do. Today of all days. Becky needs someone whose inspired to do the right thing because of her. Not the wrong one.
Yeah, by this time it would already be on all the printed ballots. However, if the concession was made in some official form then the election officialdom would be obliged to throw out all votes for her anyway.
Chris
Just looked up the rules in Indiana. Looks like the deadline for candidates to withdraw from the general election was in early August.
I THINK senators are always appointed when a replacement is needed mid-term. Who makes the appointment (usually the governor, occasionally the state legislature, maybe) and how long it lasts (either to complete the existing term or only until a special election is held) can vary quite a bit, though.
The reason being that the Senate has far fewer members (100 vs. Over 500 in he House), and the margins to determine the majority tend to also be much tighter. Flipping control of the Senate from 1 party to the other has hinged on the appointment of a temporary senator more than once. 1 House seat has almost never held that kind of weight.
thejeff
Looking a little close – 37 states have the governor appoint a replacement who serves until the next election. In 8 the governor can appoint a temporary replacement until a special election can be held. In the remaining 5 the seat is vacant until a special election is held.
I believe in all cases the new Senator must run in the next regular election, though their term still ends when the original term would have been up.
I think the reason is more historical than that: Originally Senators were appointed by state legislatures and governors could appoint replacements until the (usually part-time) state legislatures would meet. The 17th Amendment changed that to direct election of Senators and of their replacements, but allowed state legislatures to allow governors to appoint replacements.
Slartibeast Button, BIA
But wouldn’t that just mean that the seat will be vacant until a special election is held. Where some Republican less fickle than Robin can run against Jake.
Wasn’t the only reason she was still a candidate after being dumped by the party that is was too late to remove her from the ballot? But even if I’m remembering that wrong (which I may be), I’d reckon with two weeks to go it’s a bit late to remove her now.
So IMHO, despite having conceded she could still win the election.
Leorale
She technically could. But I wouldn’t vote for somebody who had already officially conceded.
Plus, story-wise, it would make this a really hollow moment. I would be very surprised if Willis would rob a big character moment of having the appropriate impact.
thejeff
Probably, though it could be used for more character conflict. “Do I resign and risk someone worse getting in or keep the seat and try not to disappoint Becky?”
Lord_Circe
I could see it being a “this was a nice gesture, but it turns out that things don’t work the way Robin thought they did” moment. Where she ends up winning, and then has to look at changing her ideals or adjusting her stance and things like that. Potential for both character conflict and character growth.
sidehack
Some years ago Missouri elected a dead guy to the US Senate. Sometimes people decide what they want whether what they want is available or not.
thejeff
Good thing too. He beat John Ashcroft.
sidehack
Yeah, but then Ashcroft became US Attorney General. His federally-backed “investigations” into 2000-election voter fraud (which didn’t happen, as his investigations determined, but that’s not what everyone was told anyway) helped pave the way for an awful voting reform act (written in large part by Missouri’s *other* senator), which pushed ID laws, expanded registration purges, and funded contracts for unauditable insecure electronic ballot systems, all of which mechanisms have been leveraged for mass disenfranchisement and stolen elections ever since. So it didn’t matter in the end, he still did quite a bit of damage.
Thing is, she’s not pulling out of the race, she’s conceding the race, the thing folks’re afraid Trump won’t do if he loses. Which is to say, even if she wins, she won’t accept the win.
thejeff
I’m not sure if that’s an option. I’m not sure conceding has any legal effect.
It does. Several, in fact, depending on the circumstances. Most notably it precludes anyone pursuing any of the measures that can be taken when the outcome is close or disputed – calling for recounts, contesting the outcome in court, etc. And that includes such measures being taken by a larger state or national organization backing the conceding contestant, such as the RNC.
thejeff
Perhaps – though there have been cases where the concession has been withdrawn.
More specifically though, I’m not sure it would matter if she won a clear victory. If it was a close loss, she could certainly not mount a challenge.
Yeah, Roz probably can’t get any pleasure out of this. She “won”, but in a way that totally robs her of anything to crow about: Robin comes out the big person, Becky accomplished her goal, and Roz had nothing to do with it.

No, I’m sorry, horizontal videos are good to show more of what’s going on, but this is just Robin speaking so a vertical video is acceptable.
