      I wanna say this would be like two days later, or more just since I was pretty sure it was day time when they had their make-peace conversation. They definitely both looked like they had slept, just since they’d have been even more haggard, otherwise.

      That said, I am not 100 percent sure.

        It’s just the next day. We’re informed when there’s a time skip beyond end of the night and the next morning. Plus, two or three days would put us into the weekend.

        It was night time when they made up and went out. We saw Sal throw her jacket to the floor after the fight, then she goes to make up with Amber, and they’re both wearing the same clothes they were during the fight when they go to the roller derby place (where members meet at night) and Malaya calls back to their last conversation – “What, you finally came to watch us practice, huh?”.

    I like that for all their bickering, Walky still considers Joyce someone he can go to with a problem, and Joyce tries to help him. They are nice sorts.

    I also like Joyce’s sweater. Very cute.

      You sure it’s not just that she’s the only who goes to class who also knows how bad things are with his grades who he’s willing to have some kind of conversation with about it (if forced)?

      Like he can’t trust Mike, Billie is in the other dorm (to his knowledge), and he’s not ready to stand up and admit to Sal just how bad things are with his grades (though I’m sure she has an idea or can figure it out).

      Joyce is the only one he knows who goes to class, is easily accessible, and is “safe”, and that last part is only because she saw his grades from passing his papers to him.

        Sure, but there are tons of ways he could have found out without asking any of his class mates. That he goes to Joyce suggest it isn’t that high of a bar. And as for her, she doesn’t slam the door in his faaace, but goes out of her way to help him.

      And yeah, Walky and Joyce have a weird, interesting dynamic! They’re like normal classmates (friends?), except their default form of communication is sass? Like despite appearances they still have a fairly healthy level of trust in each other that’s evident more in their actions than their words, like here.

    I’m also still trying to work out why Walky is so reluctant to admit that he and Amber are basically in the process of becoming an item. It’s nice that he doesn’t want to hurt Dorothy by moving on too quickly but, on the other hand, is it reasonable for her to be offended at all?

    This isn’t really relevant to this particular strip, but I’m realizing right now that both Walkerton kids get their intelligence underestimated a lot. That’s interesting to me.

      Yeah, but with Sal it’s mostly unjustified by anything she actually does whereas with Walky it’s because he says things like this or claims that only girls own more than one pair of shoes.

        Yeah, that’s what makes it interesting. Walky doesn’t like having people expect things from him, so he deliberately cultivates being an immature goof (and to an extent, he really IS an immature goof). This does lead to him being thought of as stupid, which he doesn’t like because he revels in being the honour student who doesn’t have to try and can totally goof off. It’s kind of the opposite problem Sal has, where people have so many things they want her to be that she’s not, and so that leads to her being either totally disregarded or turned on, and a big part of that is the belief she’s stupid (well, that, and asshole ideas about bikers in general, which is often tied into racist and classist ideas (though Sal’s not poor, good luck convincing a lot of people that bikers aren’t stupid and broke).

          Humour doesn’t have to degrade any real people. To the extent that it is a reaction to someone suffering a loss of dignity (an academically respectable theory o humour) the somebody can be a fictitious character or a public figure who is absent — as is usual in a non-practical joke.

          As I understand it, there’s something like $1.3 billion that’s already been agreed to in another deal, though not yet passed. Trump’s threatening a shut down if he’s not given $5 billion, which Pelosi and Schumer very nicely got him to take ownership of in their meeting today. If there’s a shutdown in the next month it’s the Trump shutdown. This also handicaps Republican plans to push anything else through using the threat of funding the government.
          Remember, this is all still in this year’s session, with the House still under GOP control. Democratic leverage is pretty minimal.

          But yes, it’s very likely that he’ll get the already planned $1.3 billion from the GOP Congress, though his own overreach may put even that at risk.

          I’m not sure why that needs to be painted as Democratic capitulation? Do we need to push the “Dems are weak” line constantly? I think they’ve actually done a damn good job these last two years, despite having very little to work with. It’s going to get much more interesting come January, when they have some actual control.

          I’m not entirely sure if it’s Dems are weak, or they just failed to adapt to the fact that the Republicans are now playing dirty. It wasn’t that many years ago that, trash as their politics might be, Dems could trust them to honour agreements. This is no longer the case and Schumer, at least, seems to fail to grasp that fact.

          From what I understand, it’s like saying “You can’t have any money for soda, but here’s some for drinks.”

          For the case in point, the amount of money isn’t really important, the GOP budget increases debt by over a TRILLION, so a billion here or there is meh, and it’s not like Trump gives a fuck anyway. He might as well have asked for a bag of marbles. The point is that he successfully extorted money, which means he will continue to do so for the next 6 years (oh gods, has it really been only 2 years so far?). Literally every time the Dems need to get something through his desk, he’s going to try and extort them, and he’ll succeed.

          He’s going to fire up his base by virtue of “the Democrats didn’t want to give me any money, but I got them to hand me over a billion dollars”, and by virtue of that good old magic called “Republican voters are dumb as all fuck”, Democrats are going to be, at the same time, “those evil stonewallers that you need to vote out because they’ll keep siding with whatever boogieman I feel like today over good Americans like you” and “those pushovers that I can do whatever I want with, and do you really want pushovers in charge of this country?”.

          Sure, he’ll try to spin it. Some idiots will even believe him.

          And yes, when Democrats need to get something through his desk, he’ll extort a price. That’s how it works when someone else controls something you need. There’s no “Democrats are weak” or “failed to adapt”, that’s “This needs to be done and he needs to sign off (and the Senate needs to pass it too)”. It’s reality.
          There’s going to be stuff we don’t like in some of those must-pass bills. Especially crammed into the one they need to get through before January, since that’s entirely under GOP control.
          But less than there might have been after the way Pelosi and Schumer played him today.

          But really, can we at least wait until Democrats control the House and have some power before we decide they’re going to roll over?

          Yeah, I don’t see that at all. Republicans would have gotten a lot more passed if that had been the Democratic attitude.

          There are a few Democrats from red states/districts who’ve done some of that, but it’s been far from a general attitude. Even some of those stood up and in some cases paid the price for it.

          Yeah, the situation’s a lot more tense with red state Dems, who have to balance party interests with trying to keep their seats, especially because they’re often leaps and bounds better than their opponents.

          And Joe Manchin who voted for him and kept his.

          Other factors involved of course. Heitkamp likely had a harder race anyway, but still …
