Maybe he’s known all along that she is Amazi-girl, but prior to this moment, has only been able to muster the courage to express his real feelings for her in the context of what was essentially fantasy role playing.

          That’s an interesting possibility. The only reason we had prior was that Amber looked so similar to Dorothy, which Danny didn’t notice until Joe pointed it out. He obviously has a type and maybe Amazi-Girl felt so different from Amber (and thus Dorothy) that he was able to let himself get closer to the masked girl in the cape.

    This, this is why Danny’s my favorite character. Because I find him so relatable, I’m the one In my group that is a bit of a fool and ‘Dans’ thing up.         The characters, or rather how Willis sees them in his mind, has grown and changed over time. This is a rethinking/reevaluation of who Danny is.

          It sure changes your perspective on characters when you peruse the Walkyverse archives. It certainly makes one think about, was this character always this way and just didn’t or didn’t know how to show it?
          I had this experience regarding Mike. The hatefuckfest with Amber that grows into a real, meaningful, loving relationship casts a lot of his actions in IW! in a very different light. Mike has quite possibly the most productive and mature hate I’ve ever seen.

If, as this strip seems to show, he has realised that the real Amber is much better than his Lois Lane fantasy bullshit, then there’s hope for him yet.

        I honestly wasn’t as fond of her in SP! as I am in DoA. Sadly, it was difficult to appreciate her appearances here, as the presence of Danny tainted the majority of them.

        This strip, however, sealed the deal for me.

          She’s different in SP!, but I’m impressed at how much she grew and evolved as a character. Her DoA incarnation is a based more on that matured concept of who Amber is rather than who she started out as lo these many moons ago.

    I recently got home from the wedding of one of my best friends, who had not been in the greatest of relationships previously. Her new husband is completely different from her previous experiences and the look she gave him during the vows is exactly the same as Amber’s. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but right now Danny’s dawning realization of what Amber is to him makes him an Amazi-guy.

      Danny has emotionally grown five or ten years in four little panels. So many males are never that honest with themselves or with their mates; those that are, can take years to get to that stage.
      In this way it’s a little bit of wish fulfillment. I prefer to take it as art (and I’m sure experience) showing an example for readers to mull over and, inshallah, take to heart.

    Okay, I hate to say it, but here’s my prediction:
    One or two story beats from now, this foursome will run into Dorothy and her parents. Amber will immediately freak out and decide that Danny only wants to be with her because she looks like Dorothy. Danny will be helpless to point out that this is actually the reason he resisted her for so long since that would mean he would have to admit that he’s “dating” Amazi-girl. (Indeed, the main reason he went after Amazi-girl in the first place was to resist what he felt towards Amber.) Tragic misunderstanding/romantic wackiness ensues.

    I’m trying to figure out what Danny thinks he’s saying, whether he thinks he’s making this up out of whole cloth, imagining he were dating Amber, or talking about Amazi-girl. In any of these cases, the fact that Danny thinks he’s lying – or basically, is lying – kind of knocks the wind out of the feel sails.

      So you think he’s saying “I’m sorry” to Amber because you believe he’s making up this whole speech on the fly?  My take is that I think he’s saying “I’m sorry” because in one brief minute he’s become aware that he’s been a real douche to Amber – and is really, truly sorry for keeping her at arm’s length.  And once he does know this, he can never ever un-know it.

        I think (and hope) you are right. But it is also possible that he is talking about his feelings for Amazi-Girl, and he is apologising to Amber because he doesn’t really feel that way about her, and knows that she wishes he did.

On the other hand, I have to wonder . . . what would happen if I started courting my husband as a masked superhero and, for some crazy reason, he couldn’t tell it was me? It would be kind of weird if he *didn’t* have feelings for my alter ego. I mean . . . if I’m exactly the same person.. and we have amazing chemistry together… that should continue even if I’m wearing a mask, but wouldn’t be the same if it were someone *else* behind the mask.

    Not sure why this is surprising to everyone. Danny, in any universe, has always been a little wishy washy until you back him into a corner and force to him to make a big decision. And when that happens, he’s often demonstrated a good level of intelligence and maturity. Unfortunately, the few times he gets backed into a corner and doesn’t do that tends to be when somebody dies. Hoping that doesn’t play out in this universe too.

    Also, anyone else having trouble deciding whether he’s describing Amber or Amazigirl is this strip? Assuming he hasn’t realized the two are the same yet.

    Somebody refresh my memory, please — Danny broke up with Dorothy; fell for Amazi-Girl; and has now shown some signs of tenderness towards Amber (who we all know is also Amazi-Girl).  And Amber (as Amazi-Girl) has shared a few pleasant moments with Danny.  But who, if anybody, was *AMBER’S* interest (as Amber, not Amazi-Girl) focused on?  If anything sinks the good ship Dannan Damber, that would be the thing that does it.

    Something I’d like to point out: the strip did not actually end on “and so I’m sorry”. It ended with a shot of Amber’s face reacting to the revelation of Danny’s real feelings regarding her. It also did not end with an ellipsis, indicating that he was not finished speaking and was merely pausing. It seems pretty clear to me that he’s apologizing to her for being an idiot about their relationship, and not the other depressing things you guys are speculating.

    I mean, jeez, stop ruining this for me. ; ^ ;

      To clarify, I meant that the presence of an ellipsis would “indicat[e] that he was not finished speaking and was merely pausing”. There was not one (there was a period instead), which means that this is not the way he articulated the sentiment.
