This is a situation where his usual cynicism isn’t as omnipresent because he genuinely wants this to work out for everyone. Naomi did a number on this guy, and he doesn’t likely wish that on anyone else.
I think Ethan and Joyce will be friends for life. Ethan is Joyce’s one friend that respects her as an adult. The others, even Dorothy tend to see Joyce as someone who needs taking care of, but Ethan and Joyce bonded when they were briefly dating, he understands Joyce because they have some of the same hangups and I think that manifests in a respect they don’t really get from their other friends.
