          She’s also probably feeling guilty/selfish for being jealous of Malaya. If I recall part of this whole “get Marcie with Malaya” thing was because she felt like Malaya was stealing her best friend, and when she realized Marcie was into Malaya, she figured getting them together would mean Marcie would get that out of her system and then Sal’d get her best friend back.

          But now she just realized that given the choice, Marcie would probably MUCH rather be spending all this time with Sal, but Sal can’t give her everything she really wants out of the relationship.

          I know shipping is shipping, but if a character’s sexuality has been Very Firmly Established, then it feels a little ickier to do it, personally.

          Like this isn’t a ‘character could find out they’re bi’ thing, but strip hovertext and some of Sal’s stuff implies to me that they’re very straight, and it’s not gonna deviate.

          It’d be just as weird to me to ship Ethan with Amber.

          Those two scenarios aren’t equivalent at all. Shipping canonically gay characters in straight pairings is not even close to the same thing as shipping canonically straight characters in gay pairings.

          I get what you’re saying, that ignoring the sexuality of someone seems icky either way, but they’re fictional characters. From a real-world sociological perspective, the former is bad, but the latter is good. Actually, most of the time it’s the only way LGBT fans will ever get to see LGBT relationships between their favorite characters, sadly.

          To be clear, I don’t explicitly have a problem with other people doing it – it’s their headcanon, after all, and I’ve got my own share. I’m just expressing my own reason of why I would very rarely do it myself.

          I wouldn’t do it with making a gay character anything but gay – gay characters are under represented as it is. Straight characters, on the other hand, are so common it’s not even a dime a dozen. 90%+ are straight. I have no problems saying ‘Eh, screw it, turns out they realized they’re bi/pan/multi/poly/whatever I feel like they’d call themselves’. Especially since people who thought they were very straight realize they’re not all the time.

          A quick glance through the cast page (which obviously lacks a few minor characters) gives us nine confirmed or implied straight people out of 21. Which is just under half, which is honestly a higher rate than I expected for this comic!

          But yeah, also recognise the point. It sometimes feels weird to me to see people make mods to make straight folk not straight in video games (depending on the game, the character and the availability of SS romance options) but it genuinely bothers me when it’s done for gay characters. One in particular where his experiences of being gay were a key part of his story (his unwillingness to pretend to be straight and procreate caused massive issues with his noble family) REALLY upset me when I saw a mod to allow female characters to romance him, because it’s disrespecting who he is on a fundamental level which is not only echoed in his own story, but also seen very commonly in the world.

          In the case where you ship a ship that doesn’t work for sexualities of those involved, does writing a gender end fix that makes it work make it less or more ick?

          I am not sure honestly. I have a complicated relationship with gender bent fic.

          I personally wouldn’t write it, but for all I know, another author doing so is a trans person who sees a lot of themselves in said character and their relationship and it’s not my place to come down on that. It’s also really really not my place to interrogate people and find out if that’s the case. So when I see fics like that, I usually scroll past them.

          Gender bends in general? I dunno. I know a lot of people prefer to do trans head canons instead, and those are great, but I’m not sure whether or not that’s just another form of gender bending? Personally, as someone who gets pretty frustrated by huge franchises I love having major male characters outnumber major female characters 2 to 1 at the very least, looking at art or fic where some of those guys were girls was empowering for me when I was younger. I also know GNC guys who felt similarly about having very feminine girls gender bent into GNC guys so….yeah, it’s complicated.

Sal might, initially, TRY, out of her love for Marcie, and Marcie will, most-likely, reject this idea because it’s a feckin’ insane, mummers fantasy. Hopefully Marcie’s honesty will end with them growing closer, instead of making things awkward, again, but, honestly, it could go either way; at this point.

      Likely they just didn’t know Marcie, well enough (or, really at all), to assume anything. And Joyce has only, barely, met Malaya. So trusting them to “lesbian sleuth” this one out was ill-advised.

        I agree with TemporalShrew. It’s definitely best to not kiss people whom you don’t want to kiss. It’s also fine that she wasn’t able to think of an instant out that would save face for Marcie. She can even go back and fix it with Malaya later as needed.

        That wasn’t the only alternative. “I’m not comfortable kissing in front of you to prove my relationship” would have been an appropriate response. Then, if Sal wasn’t comfortable continuing the plan, she could have told Marcie privately and they could have casually “broken up”. But the plan was Sal’s idea, so she should have had at least a little commitment and made more effort not to publicly embarrass Marcie.

        I’m almost ready to declare Sal a more problematic character than Lucy.

    I feel a bit sorry for sal. This can get really complicated and messy now. Friendships with one – sided feelings are not easy.
    Also, this is how you should react if a friend tells you they have a crush on you and you’re not interested. Take notes malaya.

    What i don’t get is the truck smashing half of Sal’s brain. I haven’t read the first comic Willis did so this is my first interaction with these characters – is the truck a reference? Or is it just a “stunned surprise” realization?

    I think that there is a big test ahead for Sal and Marcie. Specifically, whether their friendship is strong enough to survive Marcie’s feelings of guilt and Sal’s awkwardness at this revelation. It would be easier to just go their separate ways rather than confront this but that would be a shame, I think.

      Easier if they were casual friends, but Sal and Marcie have been through a lot. It is possible to be friends with people who you are attracted to and aren’t interested in a relationship, as long as there’s trust.

      Most likely, Marcie has a unique sign for each person she signs about a lot. One of my sisters works with deaf kids, and she says they tend to invent unique signs to refer to specific people by name.

          It’s always a bit wacky to see these iconic BGs in real life. I live near the Washington DC Hilton Hotel where Pres Reagan was shot years ago. For anyone who’s ever seen the news footage and remembers the stone wall behind him, it too is eerie seeing it up close and in person.
