        1. That’s indeed a real thing and not a joke. It’s used to beat the air pockets and voids out of concrete that has been poured into a form to make columns or foundations or things of that sort. Using one is stupendously messy, and tends to get you covered in little splatters of concrete.

          1. Honestly if your vibrator doesn’t normally leave you stupendously messy and/or covered in little splatters of concrete then I’m pretty sure you’re using it wrong.

          2. One of the best cosplay hacks I learned at a con panel was how to get bubbles out when casting resin. Professional fabrication places use vacuum chambers or vibrating tables for that. The cosplayer running the panel realized that she could get the same results by taping her strongest rabbit vibe to the table the resin mold was on.

  1. I love that this is still tagged Danny.

Very curious how things’ll be when Joe does come back around, but yeahhh, bringing him to Forest Wing for a party is a REALLY poor idea.

          1. I must not be Danny
            Danny is the egg-killer
Danny is the little-crack that brings total badness
            I will face my Danny
I will permit it to pass over and through me
And when it has gone past I will tune my inner ukulele to see its path
Where the Danny has gone there will be nothing
            Only the hat will remain

    1. Doesn’t mean she wouldn’t still have hangups she has to put to rest, I guess. That, and if Joyce couldn’t make a move, can’t figure she’d want Lucy to do it, either.

  2. It’s at this point that I remind myself that Joyce is 18, and a very sheltered and immature 18 at that, and that I wasn’t any less embarrassing as a teenager so stop making that face at your screen, self

She’ll grow out of it, one hopes

    1. probably. Think of the early strips. That was like, a few weeks ago in-universe. Joyce has been making a lot of headway as it is.

      1. I think a lot of it comes down to being very invested in the characters, the story, or both, so people will get frustrated, wanting the characters to avoid a looming “oh no!”, or losing track of how comparatively short a time the come really has taken place in so far.

  3. Lucy would love Jacob, because pretty much everyone does. Of course given the universe this is set in Jacob no doubt has some arch enemy. It would be funny if it turned out be Joyce’s mysterious brother Jordan.

Wherever he is at the moment Mike probably just broke into a scowl, because he psychically knows Joyce is thinking about him. Or just because he’s Mike.

  4. . . . I love that this Joyce does not know who Danny actually is. It is so pleasingly ironic. Also still do not ship JoyceXJacob!

    JoyceXJoe for life!

  5. I got sidetracked from the comment I wanted to make when I started wondering if “The hat’s wearing him” is a line from the comic or is it a reference to something else and people referenced it so much in the comments I associate it solely with DoA?

  6. Um…whatever we think about Danny, the fact that Joyce can’t remember anything about him except his hat is literally bi-erasure? Am I reading too much into this?

    1. She’s met him maybe twice, in this universe, so it’s not surprising that she can’t remember what he looks like. As for bi erasure, she knows nothing about his sexuality, so yes you’re reading waaay too much into this.

      1. Does Joyce even know that bisexuality is a thing? I could see her being raised with the idea that people are either straight or gay (i.e. evil).

    2. I thought bi-erasure was the belief that people have to be gay OR straight, no inbetween – not literally ‘erasing’ individuals who are bisexual.

      1. Partly, though it laps over into other aspects. It’s easy for example to forget that someone (character or real person) is bi if they’re in a relationship – you tend to just think of their sexuality based on the relationship. Think all the references to Ruth and Billie as lesbians.
They tend to get less representation in media than either straights or gays, partly because of that. Another side affect is that they tend to be shown as promiscuous, if only to keep reminding the audience they are bi.

And of course it’s also turned into a running joke.

      2. It could technically be both of those things. It can be labelling a bisexual character incorrectly on purpose (as gay, straight or other ill-fitting labels to explain away their bisexuality and erase it from their identity). If a character was literally erased or had that part of their identity erased in later interations, that could also be considered bi-erasure as well because it is erasing bi representation (unless it is like a hyperrealistic coming out journey which we all know it won’t be).

  7. Ethan is adorable and he should totally be invited! It would be really nice for both him AND Lucy to have Actually Nice Nerd Friends.

  8. See, Joyce? THIS is why you should get Walky with Lucy.

…. while, you know, easing off the matchmaker thing because you get hyper-aggressive-manipulative about it.

  9. I appreciate how, despite imaginary Jacob being correct, he maybe wouldn’t be interested in Lucy since it seems part of what’s bonded he & Joyce together is their faith. I feel like Lucy hasn’t been shown as religious so far?

Also, to MyLadyStargazer in PoGo, PokemonMasterGC here (so humble) I just wanted to thank you for your steady gift trading! I hope you’re enjoying the distance eggs too! 😀

    1. Lucy’s religious enough that she goes to church every Sunday, even when she’s excited about something else happening soon (like when Billie moved in). It’s not something she talks about as often as Joyce does, but she’d probably be capable of talking about religion with Jacob. Which, actually, seems like something Jacob values in general. He enjoys talking to Raidah about Islam as well.

      1. Yeah, someone’s faith doesn’t have to be like the core of their identity for it to be important to them. Most religious people don’t actually constantly talk about it unprompted.

        1. And, regarding what you said and building on my response to BBCC, I definitely agree. I feel like the majority of religious people I know don’t actually talk about it unless someone brings the matter up or asks them outright. I’m just used to it being explicitly addressed per character at some point in DoA. And of course, I realize there might be some religious characters in DoA for whom it’s not addressed, which is why we wouldn’t know it. I feel like faith tends to affect the story lines for the characters with it in a religious sense.

      2. Oh! I guess I forgot she attended church. Not that not attending would mean she wasn’t religious. It just seems like, for most religious DoA characters it’s explicitly stated at some point.

        1. No big deal! There’s thousands of strips and it’s been nine years. Stuff slips through the cracks.

For the record, those considered ‘main characters’ (either on the cast page or bios in the books)

          Joyce – Nondenominational fundamentalist Protestant
          Dorothy – Atheist
Walky – Agnostic of the ‘unconcerned’ variety (word of Willis)
Billie – Christian of some variety, not stated what.
Amber – Catholic (word of Willis)
Danny – Christian of some variety, not stated what.
          Ethan – Jewish
          Sarah – Not stated
Sal – Agnostic upbringing, went to Catholic school, no word whether any sort of religion ‘took’ (word of willis)
          Ruth – Not stated iirc.
Dina – Atheist iirc (though I might be thinking of Walkyverse Dina so don’t quote me on her. Joyce also refers to her as non-Christian, but I’m not sure Joyce is accurate since she believes evolution is incompatible with Christianity)
Becky – Nondenominational fundamentalist Protestant, same as Joyce.
          Joe – Jewish
          Mike – Not stated, iirc.
          Roz – Catholic
          Jacob – Episcopalian
Marcie – Catholic (word of Willis)
          Carla – Not stated
          Leslie – Atheist
          Malaya – Not stated
Lucy – Christian of some variety, not sure what. She was some stripe of ‘born again’ in Walkyverse, though.
          Mary – Nondenominational fundamentalist Protestant
          Raidah – Muslim.

According to Willis, most of the kids believe in god (as is true in real life Indiana) but whether or not that’s important to them varies. Billie, for instance, doesn’t place super great importance on her faith (and Danny says ‘church isn’t really super exciting or anything’). Meanwhile, Becky is faithful but irreverent (unless it’s important) and Joyce has it all memorized and internalized. Mary, on the other hand, is a definite believer but uses it like a cudgel to hurt people.

          1. I could see Dina as Atheist, Agnostic, or maybe Unitarian at the outside.

Mike, as ever, is what you don’t want him to be.

    1. When I was the age of the DoA cast, I wore a wool tam o’ shanter in winter. I have to admit, it was better at computer science than I was.

    1. I was going to call that his ‘real problem’, then I realised that I think Danny is quite content being anonymous to most people.

        1. I’m waiting for his reaction when he realises Sal finds his music to be the most interesting part of him.

The good thing about him being unknown to Joyce is that she’ll probably be so late to the Sal/Danny ship that she won’t be able to meddle help until it is firmly established!

  10. No, no, Joyce. If you bring Jacob to Lucy’s movie night in an attempt to attract Billie’s attention and he happens to fall for Lucy, that will be SURE to make him fall for Sarah.

    #EyesOnThePrize

    1. Jacob is such a nice guy that I can imagine him trying to find Joyce someone she can ask out on a date from the crowd in Lucy and Billie’s room.

  11. I can’t be the only one who suspects Lucy of being Jabob’s sister… I mean she says she has a sibling at the college, but not a twin like with Walky.

    1. Nope, Jacob and Lucy aren’t related.

Lucy’s brother is some other guy yet to be seen in this comic (he was in Shortpacked though).

  12. Joyce, you know already Ethan doesn’t like girls so that should have been the first thing that comes to mind before his nerd interests.

I don’t blame her for knowing so few guys though because “Ryan”.

    1. Give Joyce credit, she isn’t automatically jumping to ‘who can I pair with Lucy’. She honestly thinks that Ethan simply won’t be able to stop talking about superheroes and Transformers during a romantic comedy or whatever it is Lucy wants to show.

    2. Basically, Joyce is focussed on Ethan’s likely role as a social liability, which is funny and also sweet. It shows she is totally over his sexual alignment as an issue.

  13. I’m thinking that we’ve just been clued into a major neurosis on Joyce’s part: She’s not normal or presentable, at least in her own mind. Because of this self-image issue, she feels unable to act on her attractions too openly.

    1. She is for Jacob but she definitely isn’t normal or presentable enough for Jacobs career and thats the issue, you can’t separate the two

Just imagine they’re out at a fund raiser for his (assumed) political career and they’re at a dinner table with wealthy, connected people about to enjoy a nice, well prepared dinner and Joyce asks for deep fried chicken tenders but not too spicy or starts separating her food or something

Or they’re talking at the table and Joyce decides to get on her high horse and starts berating a donor because they’ve said something she doesn’t agree with

      1. I think if Joyce were Jacob’s SO rather than Raidah, he’d end up following a very different path. For example, I think that Joyce would encourage Jacob to be who he wants to be rather than try to ‘life up’ to his brother’s example.

        1. How do we know that it also isn’t what Jacob wants and thats hes using his brother as a template to get there

Its a bit…iffy…to suggest that Jacob doesn’t really kn ow what he wants, that hes only doing it because “brother”

      2. You’re also assuming that graduated college, married Joyce years down the road will have the same hang ups that 18 year old just out of home-schooling Joyce does. Or at least won’t have learned to cover them up better in public.

Given how far Joyce has come in a month and a half, I’d say that’s not a safe assumption.

No, this is just Joyce’s neuroses. Nor is this our first glimpse at them and how they affect her thinking about Jacob.

        1. People don’t generally pick partners based on the assumption that they’ll get over their distasteful ideologies and get a handle on their hangups though. You’re dating the person they are now not who you hope they’ll become later down the road. Or at least that’s how healthy relationships usually work.

          1. People also don’t usually avoid dating people based on fears their minor quirks will embarrass them at formal fundraising dinners years later.

None of Joyce’s quirks seem to be bar to Jacob’s interest in her.

            1. Jacob hasn’t stumbled onto how intensely judgemental and bigoted she can be. He hasn’t seen her throw a screaming fit in public over someone having premarital sex.

                1. Yeah, I’m pretty sure the basis of Hinduism isn’t ‘we were placed in creation by the Christian god and thus count as ‘through Jesus”. If Jacob had said something along the lines of ‘there’s more than one way to salvation’, you’d have a point, but he wasn’t saying that at all.

              1. No, because she’s gotten over that.
He has seen her melt down from walking into a church that didn’t match her expectations.
He has seen her food issues, which was a big part of the comment I replied to.

  14. I’m sure this hardly warrants explaining, but… why did my mind go to “jealousy”?

“Oh wow, you remind me of JOYCE but you’re normal and presentable.”

    ^ THAT. 😛

  15. Heh, I love how Joyce recognize the similarities between Lucy and herself… and immediately gets threatened by them.

Don’t worry, Joyce. Unless LUCY has sprained her arm punching out a kidnapper, I dare say Jacob will still focus his attention on you.

  16. Joe: will have sex with any one
Mike: would also have sex with anyone of it means pudding someone else off
Ethan: will like the movie night but won’t like Billie for sure
Danny: might come, if Joyce remembers his face
    Jacob: NOPE.
Anyone realize that Billie wanted guys there so they could fuck or make out, but that means she’d cheat on Ruth?
Another new low for Jeniffer Billiingsworth! !!

    1. Greetings, name sibling.

But Billie wanting guys there so that her fans will think she’s going to fuck them isn’t the same as actually planning on fucking them. If (when) she gets drunk I wouldn’t be surprised if she tried, but I doubt that’s actually what she wants to do.

      1. Yeah, it’s mostly just Billie’s conditioned reflex for a good party. Booze and guys to hit on her.
That doesn’t mean she’s actually going to cheat. Even to the making out level. Like you suggest, it’s all status. All the cheerleader/party girl image.

  17. The only non Walky men Joyce knows in college are the sex maniac, the sociopath, her gay ex that likes Batman too much, the one he barely knows but was her obsession in an alternate universe, and the guy she is obsessed with right now even if he is already in a relationship. Joyce has issues.

    1. Add to that the fact that Joyce explicit goal with going to college was to find a nice man to marry.

Joyce’s college experience has not gone… EXACTLY according to plan.

      1. She should rethink her goals and maybe get a career for the careers sake and not as a subproduct of getting a husband.

    1. Maybe she was exposed to Bat-bros or some other similarly toxic variant of Batman at some point and she thinks that’s all the wider franchise has to offer.

      1. Danny does seem to be steadily improving. He’s pretty close to being the most mentally healthy and stable character of the comic, and this is DANNY we’re talking about.

        1. Was gonna argue then realized that Dina and Jacob are probably the only two who have him beat. Maybe Sarah too. But yeah.

What have we come to, when Danny is the (relatively) well-adjusted one?!

    1. It’s kind of too bad, because Danny is finally setting up to be a great protagonist. He has a musical instrument for changing the flow of time and a hat for taking control of bad guys.

        1. Chiming in late to say: And poor Ethan doesn’t need to be put through anything like that again, even to develop Danny’s supervillain arch-nemesis.

        1. We need a storyline where Danny gets a crush on Joyce so we can get Danny having a sex dream about Joyce having a sex dream about Ethan having a sex dream about Jacob

    1. That’s because they have wildly different concepts of what “normal and presentable” is, not due to any different perceptions of Lucy.

  18. So, Joyce’s dream person, based on her last ten thousand lines of conversation, is Dorothy’s head on Jacob’s body.

Joyce: The other way around is also acceptable!

  19. Is the reason you haven’t had Joyce and Danny interact much because via different aspects they’re your most autobiographical characters and the universe inside your head would implode if you tried to have them converse?

  20. Comic Update Time +15 minutes and no comic update.

I think the normal time lag is something like 8-9 minutes. I usually wait until +15 to refresh because I don’t want the server to think I’m desperate.
