        The flashback sequence to that happened over multiple days. No reason to think they were caught more than kissing or that it would have immediately escalated farther than that.

        Had it continued,Becky likely would have run into basically the same problem she’s running into here, but it would have been over weeks or months not that day.

        Considering how it is often portrayed in media, books, or even excuses in real life (aka you shouldn’t have worn those clothes and other such things), it isn’t really surprising to me. I find it odd that not crying in public (something that can be pretty hard to do depending on the situation and person) is more of a social norm for guys than other forms of self control, especially since other forms can get more physical with someone else.
        That being said, I do suppose that it is possible to get too caught up in the heat of the moment and push things a little too far. Something along the lines of mob/crowd mentality, or even something playful like pushing each other that ends up being a little too hard (though I think that is more common with kids than adults). One has to do with crowd emotions spreading, while the other I think tends to come with instant regret (immaturity or lack of knowledge or experience on boundaries) and/or an overly conscious regard for the other person’s opinion (as in following along or not wanting to upset them, etc.). Taking the time to teach boundaries, how to know them in yourself, and respect them in others seems like a worthwhile thing to spend time on.

          This is just me personally but rather than a lack of self control I feel like there’s this…expectation for men to “take the lead”. Like “You’re gonna have to make initiate or else nothing is gonna happen.” Which kinda makes guys feel like pushing further and more is their responsibility and not like…a mutual activity. Sometimes people feel awkward having that “sit down” where they lay out ground rules because they feel like it should be obvious. Like “oh I know all about how this works, I’m a grown up”. But setting ground rules at the start can help you goin’ forward and frank discussions of what you want can make the whole proccess WAY easier.

          I assume. I’m on a 10 year dry spell.

    I gotta wonder what it’s gonna be like if Becky ever engages with a character who doesn’t do the character development for her.

    That’s not really supposed to be a complaint about the writing, if it sounds as such. I feel it’s a textual element to Becky’s character that the people around her solve her problems for her, and I wanna see what’ll happen when Becky has a problem, either one she’s causing or one she’s had enforced onto her, that Dina or Dorothy or Leslie or Joyce don’t gently assure her out of it. The dichotomy between how she treats Dorothy and Joyce versus how they and Dina treat her feels night and day, and I do think that’s a textual element to her character both in how Becky gets perceived by them as a victim to protect, and how this causes Becky to emotionally rely on them. When you grow up in a home with an abusive authority, you don’t just become emotionally dependent on unconditional love, it kind of makes you helpless in dealing with emotional problems when there’s someone who’s supposed to talk to you about them and teach you how to deal with them, and then they just don’t.

    I’m not crazy, right? Am I merely high on my supply of Becky Haterade?

      More precisely, I think Joyce and Dorothy think of Becky along these lines, but with Dina it’s probably more accurate to say that she just tries to confront Becky’s problems as straightforwardly as possible while being supportive and repeatedly checking for her.

      I think you’re dead on and it highlights why the Becky-Dorothy “rivalry” is so tedious to me. Dorothy’s always handling her with kid gloves and making excuses about how it’s only a joke in good fun. Meanwhile Becky gets to be as nasty as she likes. Maybe the Joyce-Becky argument will be a storyline where she has to confront some hard truths and grow a bit.
