If it wasn’t for the whole connection-to-the-Korean-mob-kidnapping-of-his-schoolmates-death-of-a-rotten-bastard thing, Asher would be one of the most got-it-together characters in the story.
must’ve missed the part where jennifer maliciously misgendered a trans person, blackmailed a suicidally depressed person for being a lesbian, and tried to prevent said suicidally depressed person from receiving treatment to extend said blackmail
these are all the same as being a petty jerk, sure
Insanenoodlyguy
Roller skaters are a menace and Mary masturbates to Ronald Regan. Everything Mary does is justified and she is perfect.
Raen
I feel to some extent that Jennifer is basically lucky she didn’t do anything like that – her actions are less harmful not because she has a better nature, but because her toxicity found less harmful outlets.
zee
Billifers toxic but she’s not a bigot (not actively at least, she’s still a sheltered white passing Midwestern rich girl in desperate need of some education). I wouldn’t say it’s lucky she never did those things bc as bad as she can be, I don’t think it’d occur to her to be that outright evil. Like don’t get it twisted, billies a bongo, Mary is genuine evil.
Lysbeth
It happened slightly out of frame you just didn’t see it much like the hyperbole in the previous comment
Perhaps, but therapy means him telling secrets…
I don’t know if therapist can hold criminals secrets from their patients.
Nono
It varies according to country. But the standard is that therapists are under no obligation to, and depending on the country it can even be considered breaking confidentiality laws.
The exceptions are for cases of future planned child abuse and acts of terrorism, at least as far as the UK goes.
TheScreenJockey
In most U.S. States (incl. Indiana) conversations with a credentialed therapist are generally confidential, and can only be revealed under court order (or with the client’s consent) . . . and such court orders can only be issued under specific circumstances.
For instance, in Florida, where I practice, a therapist can only break confidentiality if the client tells them about either 1) an ongoing or impending (NOT completed) crime against any minor or an elderly or disabled adult, or 2) a crime or threat of crime (implied or explicit) against the therapist who is breaking confidentiality.
Got a head start in taking care of himself after running away from his mob family? Have the cast has shitty families but it looks like he was the first to try cut himself off from his, even if he can get dragged back in. Probably took a lot of introspection in his teen years and a realization of “I want better than this, I deserve better than this. I can be better”
I wish Activision would rerelease the War for Cybertron games. Heck, not even a remaster. Just a basic port for X1/PS4, and a straight-up rerelease minus DRM on Steam.
Maybe anti-cheat. Maybe. If it also comes with a no-anti-cheat EXE for lots and lots of mods.
Yeah it’s kind of crazy there’s no way to legally play those games on modern hardware. Some of the best Transformers games ever are essentially lost media. Equally crazy no one’s decided to develop more Transformers video games in the shooter genre, or really at all. I think there’s a rts game that came out a while ago but that’s been it for years.
Needfuldoer
Are the original installers broken on modern PCs, or are they just out of print?
Could they theoretically re-release them on GOG with the DRM removed? They carry games that are much older than that. If they run fine on modern PCs, the big hurdle would be licensing.
Sirksome
The problem is that the games have been delisted. I’m not sure on the technical hurdles, but it does have emulations that run pretty easily. That’s technically “piracy” though and not many people have the knowledge to run emulations even though it’s fairly easy on modern computers.
As to why it’s not been re-released by the publisher? The answer could be anything. Hasbro has expressed interest in a re-release, but the games are owned by Activision Blizzard. Probably just think there’s not a lot of money in re-releasing a couple of niche games over a decade old.
I get the Vibe that while he has done some seriously messed up stuff in the past, probably because of his family, the dude has chilled out and tried to become better.
I have the impression that Asher has simply already processed it all and managed to sort out a few things before the others. Only his blindness to jeniffer surprises me
Like Thag Simmons said earlier, he’s got the “I can fix him” trait; and also remember
1- He was brought up in a way toxic and narcissistic environment
2- He “wants to do better”. He probably… holy shit, this is familiar, he probably holds onto very tightly to the idea people can be better if they put in the work.
Which is right, imho, just. Jennifer hasn’t… quite… put in the work :’DD Not in the healthy way skdjgs
Imogen
I don’t think Asher thinks he can fix Jennifer. A part of him thinks she’s fixing him.
Asher is trying to be a decent guy, if nothing else.
He’s got a lot of baggage from how his folks raised him and he’s still working through all that, but that’s true for most of our main characters. His situation is a lot higher stakes than the rest, admittedly, and his status as a late introduced secondary character means he’s more likely to fail than the rest, but at least for now he’s not hopeless.
Lots of career criminals are “decent dudes” so long as you are not the target of one of their crimes. They don’t just go around being generally shitty to people. Crime is their PROFESSION, and like most people, they behave differently in a professional setting than in a social one.
I know Asher has been an accessory to crimes and very likely committed a few, I have a hard time seeing him as a “career criminal”, regardless of his ties. And he appears to be seeking a new “profession” from what little details we have on him.
pope suburban
Yeah, I understand that Asher is a legal adult now, but he’s been that for like…five minutes. Up until right now, he was a child who had as much say as any child in what he did with his life, which is to say very little. Dad tells you to drop this off with your uncle, you do it. Grandpa threatens your friends unless you make a call, you do it- and that’s a situation that would be overwhelming for an independent adult, never mind an adolescent raised with skewed norms around acceptable behavior and obedience. Asher seem to want a normal life for himself. Frankly, I’m not even mad that he took from his family to make that possible, because they’re the ones who set him back and appear to want to keep him back with regards to going legit. Godspeed you, kid, get out and don’t look back. I only hope it doesn’t bring him and/or his loved ones to ruin later on.

funny how being “good” = being Walky (by funny, I mean, absolutely INFURIATING for Jennifer lolololol)

Asher getting into an “I can fix him” romance isn’t that surprising. That he’s the one doing the fixing though, can’t say I called that.

Yeah. I feel like there’s some background “Asher had a wakeup call” story coming…

Asher will tell Jennifer about this and she will insult him for being a loser for staying faithful.
Lumino
Of course she will, because Jennifer is basically Mary with the serial numbers filed off.

They’re both bongos, but they’re very different sorts of bongo and one is much, much worse than the other.
Insanenoodlyguy
No, Mary would insult him for considering it. She’d praise the being faithful part.
Tan
Praise? No. Maybe backhanded ‘praise’ while making homophobic remarks and generally asserting her moral superiority
audkitten
Imagine if THAT is what makes her break up with him
C.T. Phipps
I fully believe Asher will tell her, she’ll react that he’s not BAD BOY enough, and he’ll dump her.
And then Jennifer will be confused that people dump HER.

Why does asher have the most mental health here
Mr. Random
People with money get therapy?
Jo_cubstar
Checks out^

Perhaps. But Asher’s family has criminal ties. It may be a stereotype but I can’t imagine mental health being a big thing in that environment

Eh, Becky seems mostly okay for being a broke teen. She’s got her hangups but she’s a lot more aware of hers.

That qualification’s doing a lot of work there.
And Becky has long practice at pretending to be fine, covering up childhood abuse.
