That sound was the first thing in my mind when I saw that.
I only came to the comment section to see how far down I had to scroll to find someone mentioning it. I was not let down.
So, do we need to keep kicking Amber around Willis? I know this is who a vigilante running around in the day in a crowded campus would actually resolve, but please stop it.
We can’t ask Willis to stop causing his characters pain, but I do hope we can at least get people to stop calling realistic consequences “deconstruction”.
Isn’t that what a deconstruction always is? What’s your objection to the phrase?
Haven
My objection is that if you think that you literally only know the word from TVTropes. Using deconstruction that way doesn’t make any sense outside of that very specific context, and you have to follow a very tortured chain of logic to get it there.
GDwarf
While “realistic consequences” and “deconstruction” are not synonymous, deconstruction does involve realistic consequences. Rather like how “falling” and “sky diving” are not the same thing, but the latter does rather require the former.
And the proverbial excrement is about to impact the revolving blades.
de•con•struc•tion noun \ˌdē-kən-ˈstrək-shən\
: a theory used in the study of literature or philosophy which says that a piece of writing does not have just one meaning and that the meaning depends on the reader
Full Definition of DECONSTRUCTION
1: a philosophical or critical method which asserts that meanings, metaphysical constructs, and hierarchical oppositions (as between key terms in a philosophical or literary work) are always rendered unstable by their dependence on ultimately arbitrary signifiers; also : an instance of the use of this method
2: the analytic examination of something (as a theory) often in order to reveal its inadequacy
So, Plasma, which definition fits this situation best, in your opinion.
Though according to comic book writers, you’d swear it was.
GDwarf
It does help, though. Now, a truly unlikable character being kicked around doesn’t tend to invoke likability, but pretty much all others will become a “woobie” (yay TV Tropes!) and get a larger fan following.
Comic book writers seem to know this, and so rather than using actual character development to make someone likable they just have their life go wrong 24/7.
Fortunately, DoA doesn’t use that sort of logic. The kicking around of characters is so affecting because we already like them.
StClair
Hey, it’s worked for Peter Parker for fifty years…
And that’s how Dina gets arrested, pardoned, a spot on the tonight show, acting gigs, an Oscar, millions of dollars, and starts a business cloning dinosaurs.
So when you are riding your allosaurus down the street in a few years, be sure to thank Amber for leaving her Amazi-Girl outfit where Dina could find it.
Ruth is not looking for Amazi-Girl, she merely misplaced her Billie.
But I like your spin better. Riding a dinosaur sounds awe-inspiring, especially when done naked. (But it probably wouldn’t live up to expectations; I never should have opened that box.)

Well time to turn to supervillainy, Dina get the shovel.

You see, they’re terribly comfortable. I believe everyone will be wearing them in the future.

Good night Coru. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.

As you wish.

Holy shit your comment was exactly what ran through my head when I saw Ruth’s shirt.

Yay she didn’t drink herself to death!
Doctor_Who
Considering her temper, let’s hope she didn’t drink herself to anyone else’s death either.
Yotomoe
I haven’t seen Billie since this morning…
The Cozburger
Nah, too obvious. It’d have to be some random student nobody could possibly link her to.

Like lesser-seen freshman Sydney Yus?
Oh no…

Also good that no one else drunk her to death. This time.

Ruth’s shirt is very appropriate here. It’s like that thing in Metal Gear when you get spotted
Tunaro
Sadly, there ain’t any crates ta hide under right now
Jen Aside
She just needs to run really fast and hide in a corner somewhere for like five minutes.
Tunaro
Or maybe Dina could sneak behind Ruth and knock her out Vulcan style.

Maybe She can Zandatsu her.

I immediately heard the sound effect when I saw the last panel.

In other words, you want Willis to tone down the deconstruction, your hope might be in vain or maybe not…

Not the traditional dictionary meaning of deconstruction as such, rather I am using the TVTropes meaning of the word.

Kicking Amber around keeps her sympathetic.

That’s not what makes a character sympathetic.
