          reminds me of my favorite anagram from Zero Time Dilemma 🙂

          (Zero Escape is a fun trilogy. ZTD is definitely a contentious third game–I disagreed with a lot of decisions: eg not including an inset map, using special effects [SFX just made things silly imo], imbalanced foreshadowing, purple eye color, some of the bad ends feeling very anticlimactic … but I think it at least answered the questions from the previous game while adding some semblance of overarching narrative to the series. I suppose it’s not so much “bad” as it is “underwhelming”.)

      I think the far more likely answer is that Sarah has always had a relatively high pissiness/misanthrope quotient, and seeing Lucy successfully put the moves on Jacob in just one night caused some sort of stack overflow.

        I’m thinking it’s a strategy shift. Sarah was told a few times by Jacob that she needs to let people in, and seeing how he was attracted to Lucy’s cheerfulness enough to spend the night with her, combined with how interested Jacob was with Joyce and her cheerfulness last semester, it made her realize that she’ll NEVER get Jacob by being a Miss Grumpypants 24/7.

        Do I think this strategy will work? Most likely not, but kudos on Sarah FINALLY trying to improve herself, whereas Jennifer is still stuck in her rut.

      After seeing Lucy and Jacob kiss and then leave together, Sarah wandered a little, drifting between brooding, dejection, and a lot of just feeling like she was a spectator of her own life. She ended up spacing out in the Beck common room, where Arnold struck up a conversation. Maybe it was the lingering effects of the booze or his mild snarkiness, but she found him easy to talk to. There’s no sparks yet, but just being able to be comfortable with someone has given her a measure of peace. And is making it easier to move on.

        Wasn’t it just a day or so ago in universe that Lucy and Walky had brunch? also the way Radiah refused to acknowledge Lucy the whole time even when Lucy directly talked to her radiah has no buisness expecting best friend level loyalty. I don’t think Lucy would know anything about Radiah and jacob because her whole lunch was talking to Walky about his mom and complainingabout Sarah getting Dina kicked out (heavily exaggerated version) don’t think her and her ex ever got mentioned.

      “In _that_ way?” seems to imply that there’s a distinction in Lucy’s mind. It could go one of two ways:

      – Lucy thought Sarah was only into Jacob physically, and is realizing she may have wanted a long term dating sort of relationship with him.

      – Lucy thought Sarah had a small crush on Jacob, but didn’t realize it was more than JUST crush.

      I don’t think the big takeaway is Lucy not knowing. She barely interacted with Sarah and when they did it was tense. Jacob downplaying he knows Sarah liked him romantically is the real punch here. He’s hanged with Sarah multiple times, knew she was down bad, and didn’t care. That’s all fine, but downplaying that after the fact is slightly disappointing. Just own it dude.

        Jennifer did know Sarah was trying to break up Radiah and Jacob and back when it was revealed at Joyce’s party they were together Sarah was pretty obvious about wanting Jacob if radiah had him.

          Sarah and Raidah also have a fairly evident mutual dislike of one another. Sarah wanting Raidah’s as-was boyfreind to break up with her could have been construed by Jennifer as a purely spiteful act rather then wanting him herself.

Or is it just that she can’t stop Ethan because he’s not really in her circle of influence the way Jennifer is? What are the rules of Asher dating? Beyond never trusting him. That one is a given.

      Sal cares about Billie because they are childhood friends. Ethan is someone she’s vaguely acquainted with through Amber. She has very different investments in these two people.

      I think it’s less she’s Okay with Ethan dating Asher and more it’s out of her hands and much less her business.

      I think she is also potentially self aware enough (MAYBE) to know she isn’t in a place where she can have a “relationship” – she can barely tolerate friendships. Jacob clearly wants a relationship, and he and Lucy had the chemistry, the ability and the opportunity…. Maybe, big maybe, she is just relieved the pressure is off to keep pushing her boundaries/limits when it came to trying to force herself into someone Jacob would want. Idk.

      The second option is what I see happening here, Sarah seemed okay with Joyce potentially dating Jacob so I don’t think Sarah is really the jealous type (more like a perfect excuse to move on!), the Raidah thing had more to do with Raidah than it had to do with Jacob. Yes, she’s into him but is mostly sexual, she had no interest in romance… maybe she is aromantic now that I think about it!

        I think things have changed. Originally, way back when, she was interested in Jacob physically. Then it became a matter of not letting Raidah have him.
        But recently she’s come back around to interest in him, even to the point of making some (mostly failed) efforts to open up to him.

        She might be telling herself that second option, because it’s easier, but I doubt she’s actually happy about it.

      As for the first half of that, leaving the party together they way they did and then showing up the next morning still together is a pretty good clue they’re some kind of couple.
      Might not last, but it pretty clearly wasn’t the kind of drunken hookup where you’re all embarrassed and don’t want to deal with each other the next day.

    1) Sarah is trying to be cheery to win Jacob over.
    2) Sarah is legitimately happy, because she can like Jacob without having to deal with feelings.
    3) Sarah is vicariously happy for Lucy and is much more mature than we thought or spiteful at radiah.
    4) Sarah is going to, at some point very soon, whip back to being growly and mean.
    5) Sarah is like this normally when she isn’t sublimating hornyness into grumpyness??? Does she do that?

      If I had to pick, I’d pick #2, or close to it. When Jacob was with Raidah or single, Sarah felt she had to Do Sonething About That, where ‘that’ is her attraction to him. She’s said that she doesn’t want a romantic relationship before, though, and Jacob messed with that.

      Now he’s unavailable and not because Raidah ‘reclaimed’ him, so there’s less pressure. Plus, her recent efforts in the direction of being less overtly mean have not punched her in the face, so those have been successful too.

      It could be a case of ‘fake it til you make it’ but it could also be Sarah genuinely in a decent mood.

      Or she really is the zero sum of happiness – most of her floor is hangover town and thus unhappy, so she’s happy enough to net it all to zero.

        Maybe from assuming she overheard and understood as much of their conversation at the party as it seemed she did since she commented on it to Jacob as soon as Sarah walked off.
        Of course, if she’s not good at reading people and situations she could have misread it.
        OTOH, Sal figured it out and she hadn’t even seen Jacob before this party and I doubt Sarah was pouring her heart out to her either.

        Exactly! The only time Sarah was around Jacob when Lucy was talking to him (in the snow a while back), Sarah was just being her usual prickly grumpy self, which is how she typically is with EVERYONE who’s trying to get to know her. There seriously was no reason for Lucy to assume Sarah was holding a torch for him, and every reason for her to assume Jacob was just… trying to make friends with her, the same as Lucy was.

        All of the “wow, uh, this is super out of character for Lucy”s were really making me scratch my head wondering if I had missed something, lmao.

Basically any guy-liking gal in his vicinity is potentially Into Him™, so not making a move based on that information would actually be kinda silly. Imagining an entire room of people who wanna fuck the same guy but nobody does it because they’re trying to be polite to each other.

      Was it Marten Questionablecontent? That seems like a Marten thing, but it might have been an anime.

        Probably not Marten. iirc there was Sara (eaten by an allosaur), right at the beginning of the comic, who he was a little bummed out about (they had mutual rushes, then Sara had an epiphany just as she was asking him out that he could never live up to the version of him in her head), Faye, which was kind of devastating, actually dated Dora, was pretty broken up about Padma, had a girl (Tai’s friend) who rejected him and he mostly laughed it off, but they had just met so it’s not this trope, and then has been with Claire since. I think that’s all of them.

        There are probably a lot of animes it could be, but if it was QC I’d say it was maybe re: Clinton and/or Eliott’s crushes on Brun

    Legit intrigued as hell about this.

    I wonder if Sarah is the kind of person whose emotions about a person just unplug when reaching a breaking point, and is getting over Jacob now she’s realized it wasn’t happening (which allows her to stop embarrassing herself for a guy, which probably was super weird for her.)

    There’s several other things that could be happening, this one is what I’m betting on, and I’m excited about the drama about to unfold no matter which one it is.

      I think it helps that unlike with Radiah, Sarah has no beef with Lucy and knows Lucy wasn’t getting with Jacob to spite her. if I were in Sarah’s position I’d be more angry at the jerk who outed my unrequited crush and claimed I’d assault them with a baseball bat like a psycho.

    Hmm. I find Sarah’s level of misanthropy OTT a lot of the time, but one option I haven’t seen is: you are able to be grumpy/sarcastic/silly with people you like. People you are not actually close with are the ones who get the socially acceptable presentation.

    So either withdrawing from the tentative amount of trust she had into friendly acquaintances or just shutting down so hard that it’s professional face all the way is my bet.

      Even if Lucy didn’t know, Jacob did. Sarah, for all intents and purposes at least put some level of trust in Jacob at least…Letting her go at her own pace to try and sort herself out. She had previously assumed he was a nice enough person to be patient with her.

      Does Jacob really owe her anything? No. Did she originally invite Lucy to the party to show they could work towards a friendship? Yes. How did all of that work out for Sarah?

      Like I said, even if Lucy isn’t at fault here, Sarah probably recognizes now there’s no further need to give any level of energy towards Jacob ever again. As sad as it sounds she may even feel vindicated that no one is worth any level of affection for a long time.

      Sarah has never show a “socially acceptable presentation” anytime as far as I remember, she is her misanthropic self with everyone she meets. This looks a bit more like that “smile vampire” thing when Joyce was in an awful mood and that make her act all happy. Don’t think it’s the same situation but it looks similar.

    I’m confused about why so much of the comment section believes Raidah is either a motivating force or will be an antagonistic force regarding Sarah’s feelings and Lucy’s relationship with Jacob respectively.

    Yes, Sarah wanted to break up Jacob and Raidah, but she liked Jacob before she knew he was dating her. And yes, she still hates Raidah, but the break up was mission accomplished long ago, so it was no longer a factor in her feelings for him.

    And as for the idea that Raidah will try to antagonize the happy couple, I don’t see her doing anything besides the odd passing remark, like comparing Lucy to Joyce or pointing out to Sarah that she missed her chance (assuming she knows how much Sarah wanted Jacob in the first place); regardless, I’d be surprised if there was anything more than the bare minimum amount of Mean Girling ™.

    Hell, I’d be surprised if they even see her anytime this day (sometime soon, but today would be convenient).
    The one time the friend group ran into her was because her clique was presumably walking Jennifer to class after breakfast.
    That’s definitely not happening today, so it would be weird for them to run into her on the way to class this morning.

    And even if the happy couple did eventually run into Raidah, how much will she even care?
    She and Jacob haven’t even interacted (on screen) for weeks before the time skip, and she hasn’t even mentioned him since they broke up, iirc.
    I believe she once said something about moving on easily if a man didn’t appreciate her, and that seems to be the case.

    Maybe Sarah is feeling relieved she doesn’t feel she has to try anymore. There was this big tension of wether or not Jacob liked her, and maybe now that’s gone. And also a bit of a rush of feeling “I was right all along about keeping those walls”. But in a way I think the ‘happy’ party is also a facade – she doesn’t feel angry, but does feel kinda sad, and overcompensates when hiding that so comes off kinda cheerful.
