Now that I've got your attention, Dumbing of Age is gonna be a launch title on the webcomics iOS app, Comic Chameleon!  Don't worry, it's the good kind of app where they ask permission and pay me instead of just steal from me.  There's some mighty fine comics lined up on there!

      No, it looks like Ruth is being earnest about this. Look at her hand, it relaxes from a fist in the third panel. If Ruth was screwing around, trying to mess with Billie, I don’t think Ruth would have relaxed into that kiss.

          Agreed. I never could understand why everyone hated Shinji but loved the abusive Asuka. Everytime I heard her talk, I prayed for it to stop. But I tend to fall on the lawful side more than the chaotic.

          Agreed. Adding psychological trauma or whatever to a character’s past is all well and good, but it doesn’t excuse their actions in the present. Yes, it sucks that you had a difficult childhood and it is understandable why you struggle with these problems, but nonetheless there comes a time for all of us to grow the hell up and take responsibility for ourselves. I hope Ruth can deal with her crap.

          Oooh…that tough to explain to a non-Rider fan.

          Okay…in Japan there are heroes name Kamen Riders. They each have a unique set of powers that in most cases come from/is aided by a belt with is also in most cases their henshin/morphing device to change into their hero form.

          Kamen Rider OOO’s ( O’s ) used Core Medals of different animals to form a three part outfit (one attribute of each animal) and his powers was based on his form.

          Core Medals were the bricks, but cell medals were the concrete that held them all together. So when the bad guys got strong everytime they got a new Core Medal they needed more Cell Medals to hold the form together.

          The guy who found all this stuff on a archelogy dig was fond of making Birthday cakes and would shout ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ whenever a new form was discovered or some major was revealed as ‘birth’ of a new character.

          Probably the worse summary of Kamen Rider O”s you’ll see, but hope it helps.

      I know about that but I still like it. I made a post asking why we expect people who are being really mean to each other that it’s a subtext for wanting to take a trip to bone city.

      But I think their relationship is a bit more complex than that. When Ruth came to Billie’s room they got along okay and when Ruth seemed upset Billie was concerned and asked her what was wrong.

      True, but I don’t think the comic will portray it as nothing but good healthy romance if she does accept it. If this is the start of a relationship, I think they’ve got a long and complex path to go before they’ll really be at ease with each other and what’s going on, but as Pinja said, they’ve gotten along fine before, even if it was just one moment…
      Billie’s snapped at Ruth, and Ruth’s snapped at Billie, but they’ve also tried to help each other sometimes (Billie asking Ruth how she feels and letting her into her room, Ruth clearing the elevator so Billie would get to class on time).
      They’ve got some sort of…vague understanding, I think, and yesterday’s strip was Billie trying to get that understanding clearly explained.

      In short: I know this is skeevy right now, but hopefully they’ll manage to trust each other eventually and everyone will live happily ever after! (Oh wait, Willis. Okay, live in a state of tolerable misery ever after.)

          Yeah, I know. (And, in hindsight, calling it a relationship at this point seems a bit hasty. Ruth seems more attracted to Billie — Billie just seems like she wants a friend. We haven’t seen the aftermath of this yet, so it’s too soon to call.)

I was going to say he’s “made exceptions”, because Mike and Amber have a sort of unconventional relationship, but they’re aware that it’s unconventional and it’s not being treated as desirable. I think it’s going to be the same thing here, and if these two turn out to come into some sort of relationship, it’s not going to be portrayed as clean and healthy.
          That’s another thing about Willis — he’s got so many characters, all with different standards of good and normal and healthy, that anyone can be called on anything that any one character finds unappealing.

          Think more that the character in DoA are complex multi-faceted. This budding relationship won’t be portrayed as purely good or purely bad but as it is in real life: Complicated and hard to understand for anyone, including the parties involved.

          Yeah, basically this. Some characters’ definition of a relationship won’t work for other characters. Some aren’t sure what they’re doing, some know it looks strange but think it works for them and so on. (The Walkyverse’s most conventional relationship was probably the original Joyce/Walky, and we’ve come quite a ways since then. They were love-at-first-sight, troubles-along-the-way ones — the characters in DoA are more a stewpot of egos and interests and motives, where it doesn’t seem like anyone’s set up specifically for another.)

          Actually, it’s more to explain every single aspect of what I’m saying so that it won’t get misunderstood or misinterpreted, especially when it’s being said on the internet. If you’re dumping a lot of info at the same time, and one brick in the wall of text is ambigous, then the whole text can turn ambigous. Then if you’re met with a confrontation to that opinion, you might reply while having a wrongful idea of what the issue is (you think they have an issue with your opinion, they actually have an issue about what they construe as your opinion because you didn’t define it clearly enough). That just leads to senseless confrontation and bad-aftertastes all-around. Of course, I’m not saying that the crowd on this site are liable to misunderstand or misinterpret a comment, just…(etc, etc. You get the idea.)

          Can I just say I love my Grav here? It makes me feel like the word-spouting nerdy kid in a 90’s TV show. Marcie’s just…got that kind of expression.

          Maybe. Ruth might be working through some things too, and just not know how to express it ( obviously). Not just her sexuality, but the way she interacts with people. They have an adversarial relationship, but that doesn’t mean Ruth would be abusive, and Billie apparently isn’t actually scared of her, as a victim of abuse would be.

          Yeah, true. Ruth has been pretty inconsistent in her behavior, and it makes sense that she’d be stressed and suddenly conflicted, faced with unfamiliar situations, and so on.
          I wasn’t really taking that into account, though (that’s why I used character A and B rather than specifics, too — to reduce this situation to the basest components) because that would include complexities. If they try to define their relationship, try to sort things out, and basically Deal With Things as things arise, I’d be cool with that. If Billie forgave Ruth for past behavior right now, but later strips showed no indicator that such behavior was going to stop, with Billie still not consenting to it, I wouldn’t. (And, well, this is probably not what’s going to happen. Willis knows his stuff and wouldn’t portray it as excusable, yo.
          …Probably not what’s going to happen unless this is leading up to a genuine domestic abuse storyline. Hm. Which could be interesting.)
          That’s what I meant, basically — McG said it would be gross if Billie just accepted the advances of someone who’s been bullying her for a long time, Heatth said “I don’t see how it’s ‘gross'”, and I tried to explain. And here we all are today! (…And the explanation was probably redundant because ‘creepy’ and ‘gross’ could mean about the same thing in this context. Hm. Oh well.)

          A little thing, though–it’s not that she would be abusive, it’s that she’s already sort of been by using violence in the past. She’s fought with her (although I think both those fights were started by Billie, so it’s mutual), she’s tripped her up for no stated reason except boredom (and, as you posited, possibly other things bubbling under the surface), and there’s the SLAM! in yesterday’s strip. She’s…pretty rough. And even if Billie isn’t scared of her (sort of arguable — she looks pretty dang worried in the first two panels of today’s strip, and in the last panel of yesterday’s), that doesn’t make it non-violence.

          Phew. Uh. Time to sleep now, methinks.

    There was some strong foreshadowing of Ruth’s attraction to Billie the time they hung out and had beers together (a few months ago in real time), so I wouldn’t say that it came out of left field, if you’ve been paying attention. It would seem that a complicated and painful relationship is in the offing . . . Or maybe we’re going to see a girl fight in the next strip, or some extended self-torture on Billie’s part as she wrestles with whether to report Ruth for a sexual assault. It will be interesting any way it turns out.

This seems forced to me, and if I was in the same situation Id feel pity for Ruth and ask her if she had someone she could trust to talk to about all the stuff shes going through. If Billie actually liked what was happening, Id call bullshit. How anyone could be suddenly attracted to someone that treats them like shit makes no sense whatsoever to me.

        I don’t think Billie was ever attracted to Ruth, just wanted her to be her friend as she has been having trouble making friends. So I suppose when Ruth waltzed in and started “hanging out” with her she thought there was a chance she could be making a friend who is not a nerd or loser in her eyes (I put quotation marks around hanging out because from what I saw it looked awkward).

        Ruth, on the other hand, treats Billie extra special which is usually what someone who is attracted to a person would do. Yes, there are always other possible reasons for Ruth to treat Billie differently compared to others, but the fact that she picked Billie out of all the other people staying at the dorm to hang out with when she was feeling poorly and after treating her so bad, would indicate some sort of special attraction.

        I’m pretty sure I’m just pleased because The Gay is underrepresented in media, so every time I see it I have a fist-pump reaction regardless of how I’d feel in any other circumstance.

        Willis has a reputation now among fans for being The Gay Jesus of Webcomics, but he doesn’t overwhelm all the rest of the media I consume where they’re extremely, painfully rare, and in spite of all the jokes they don’t actually overwhelm his straight characters, either.

        But I did like Mike/Amber, when all was said and done.

But anyway, I don’t remember her interacting romantically in IW with anyone other than Billie, so I’m gonna stick to my contention, but it’s not like it matters. People are who they are. We can slap labels on them all we want, but they’ll be who they want to be, do what they want to do, and kiss who they want to kiss, regardless. Ruth could well be straight in both universes, and Billie is a frustrating and confusing exception, which is where the hostility came from.

          As I said further down to someone else in a comment chain that also included you: Willis has made a point of saying in previous comments that Ethan being gay is a constant because being gay is genetic. So Ethan being gay in one universe or another should be no more reason for surprise than his having black hair and a square jaw.

          Same thing goes for Ruth, Billie, Leslie, Robin, and for that matter: Amber, Joyce, Walky, Dorothy. Straight characters stay straight, gay characters stay gay, bi characters stay bi. Characters can be more or less accepting of their sexual orientations in one universe, but those sexual orientations are still the same.

    This…is an odd time to bring this up, but I really enjoy Billie as a character. Some days I dislike her as a person, and other days my heart goes out to her. She feels very “real” to me. She may actually be my favorite part of this comic.

        Agreed! Someone of the fanart-makers said “she’s not a very good person, but I want her to be” and I think that sums it up alright. She hasn’t often been nice, but she’s clearly able to when it matters (analyzing Joyce’s condition at the party), and she’s had moments of insecurity that show there’s something going on behind the default too-cool-for-you confidence. She’s not as bombastic or over-the-top as some of the other characters, either, so I think she feels more real because of that.
        …Willis writes his strips like a really good soap opera. Drama! Excitement! Actually caring about the characters!

      Billie is my fave too. She seems mean superficially but when it comes down to it she’s always been there for her friends, she’s brave and stands up for herself and she’s funny. She’s very complicated and that makes her real and that makes me care.

      People in the comments are far too judgmental of all the characters. Danny and Dorothy also get way too much shit.

        Re: Danny and Dorothy — yeah, I can see that. Danny hasn’t exactly been showing stellar behavior, but his entire conceivable future was crushed and he’s still recovering. Dorothy’s pretty reserved and professional, but she’s focusing on what’s important to her, which you can’t really be faulted for.
        Plus Sal got lots of crap when she went off with Jason, and Joyce got lots of crap when she freaked out on Dorothy for saying her and Walky were going to sleep in the same room…I can see why people get mad at characters in their more unsympathetic moments, but it’d be weird if they just didn’t have them.

      If this is sarcasm, let me just say that at least Ruth has obvious genuine issues. She’s not a Brooding Mysterious Stranger with a Secret Heart of Gold and she won’t be encouraging anyone to go into a relationship with the intention of fixing an abusive asshole.

      I think Ruth could really use a stable, supportive friend, but there are limits to what that friend has to put up with.

      On the other hand, the last strip DID just demonstrate pretty baldly that Ruth can be a perfectly sweet and thoughtful RA, and she just has a hate-on for Billie. While not ideal, lashing out is the way some people express attraction (like the adult version of pulling on pigtails), and with same-sex attraction, which often brings with it a whole truckload of self-loathing, lashing out can be the result of self-hatred and learning to accept yourself can eliminate that.

      I think I just took a very long, roundabout journey to “Billie would be within her rights to be upset and walk away from this, but Ruth could really use someone in a supportive position, and it IS possible that Ruth’s abusiveness could go away with support and ideally some form of therapy, and then maybe these two could have a healthy relationship”.

      But this is college, and Willis’s very title drives home that college is a place where a lot of people make a lot of really dumb decisions.

        That’s a pretty good conclusion, there, especially the “Billie would be within her rights” and “there are limits to what that friend has to put up with”. Ruth just seems…unaccustomed to the whole situation. That “she can be a perfectly thoughtful RA” thing is interesting, too, because it seems that kindness and smiles is her ‘professional’ response — when she has to deal with unaccounted-for situations (such as the stragglers in one of her early strips), she uses her own methods, which often seem to involve force and intimidation. It may be something similar here — this is unusual to her, outside the scripted-responses zone, so she deals with it using those same methods.

        I didn’t really take into account the issues she might be facing with her own sexuality, but you raise interesting points. It’s also possible Ruth’s lashing out because she wants Billie to avoid her, and then she may not have to deal with these emotions…but she also seems to want to make contact with Billie herself, judging from the fact that she was the one who approached her when they watched sports together. (This is an even longer shot, but back in It’s Walky, young Ruth had a great disdain for the ‘popular kids’ in school with no perspective on the outside world, and Billie may remind her of that. Of course, this Ruth may not have had those same experiences.)
        As you say, it’s definitely not simple, and both parties seem uncertain about the whole situation.

        I do agree that Ruth needs a stable and supportive friend, and that’s also what Billie needs right now, and I’m not sure she’s fully equipped to handle this situation. Even if she is, I’m not sure she trusts Ruth enough to think this is genuine. And even if she was, well…as you say, they’re just in college. She may not know what to do. Wherever this goes from here, though, it’s going to be Interesting-Ville. (Excitement Valley?)

        …So I basically commented to say “yes, yes, yes and yes”. This is the most redundant comment ever.

      Ruth had a thing with Billie in It’s Walky (although I’m not 100% about that — it showed up in a series of more humorous, forth-wally comics) and at Amber and Mike’s wedding, Walky mentions that “Billie made out with our babysitter”, that babysitter being Ruth.

      Throughout history, artists have yearned for acknowledgement. As such, when art began to appear on the internet, be it in the form of pictures, videos, or writing (particularly fanfiction), those artworks which had positive, quantifiable responses, generated further works, as the artist attempted to sate their thirst; usually works of a similar nature, so as to capitalise on whatever factor brought the initial windfall. Artists without such a response went elsewhere.

      Consequently, those who appreciate art on the internet – including this webcomic – are trained to respond more often when they like what they see, because they believe it will bring more of the same.

      Then there’s the secondary effect, which is the one that’s dragging me in; people comment more when there appear to be more people to read what they write (and possibly reply) – so there’s an exponential growth factor to comment counts. But after a small period of time, the count certainly becomes more dependent on the time that has passed since the comic was first posted.

      I have been reading Willis’ work for over a decade. And this is the very first time I have felt the need to register and comment. This one moment is one of the most shocking/intriguing/sweet(?)/memorable in the entire series.

      Worth noting that the two characters involved are such rotten people otherwise, to see such tenderness is like a glass of ice water in the face.

I mean, most often, it seems like interactions occur, then, after they’ve ended, we skip away to other interactions that happen later, giving an illusion of real-time progression. However, it’s sometimes been the case that we’ve left scenes, mostly due to cliffhanger reasons, then when the perspective comes back it’s from where we left off. Which couldn’t happen if all interactions are after one another. Probably they all just happen in vague blocks of time, so that interactions go on roughly at the same time but in different places.)

    As a rule, I disapprove of any DoA relationships that occurred previously in the IW universe, just because it is so refreshing to see the characters avoid such well-trod grounds.

    This does not fall into that rule because (1) two strips do not make a ground well-trod, and (2) this looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

    I’m really hoping that Willis lets us get to the fun part (i.e. these two coming to terms with reconciling what they are feeling now with what they felt before and what this may or may not mean to them in the future, and what they are willing and/or ready to do about it) and that he isn’t just ship-teasing or starting an excruciating long no-real-progress standoff with these two tsundere-ing each other for a couple years before either giving in or giving up.

    Please, no, Willis. Don’t do that. That’s a cheap trick and a crutch for writers who can’t figure out how to make their story interesting after the lovers get together. We know that you are better than that. Keep striving.

    And as a postscript, let me add that I’m not sure what to think about the Sal/Jason hanky-panky. On one hand, this has been done before, sorta. On the other hand, both of them are in such different places in regards to shared history and tragic pasts and all that crap, that in many ways, it’s a brand new scenario that just happens to have two very similar characters in it. In any event, it’s much much better than any DoA Sal/Danny would ever be.

        Your gravatar makes it weird whenever you agree with someone. But I agree with you about the old relationships: the characters aren’t exactly analogous to their “current” Walkyverse selves but they have even less in common with IW because IW’s premise not happening is kinda the point here.

    I personally think Ruth is being legit here, all my bias aside. There are indicators. Look at how tense Ruth is in the first panel, then there is a shift in her attitude, to a more somber look, then she completely loosens up at the end. I doubt she would be so calm in the final panel, if she was just trolling Billie, i think she would be more tense, for shes not only kissing someone, shes kissing Billie. She would be tense to defend herself against Billies reaction. And shes not.

    Also, this is epic timing on Ruths part, with Billie not only feeling “Less popular” But also having some issues on the sexual department, just being ignored by someone she was coming onto (Joe) and the whole reason she was so upset in the last strip.

    Overall I think this entire relationship can easily be deduced. Ruth is much like a very young girl who suddenly develops feelings for another person. Feelings she either has had bad luck with, or that are new to her. Either way, she reacts much like the young girl, and instead of acting nice, acts mean. Atleast this is how I’ve read into Ruth, who happens to be my favorite DOA character.

    Anyways, excellent strip David, really caught the attention of alot of people here. I just hope it goes the way I’m hoping it goes. Too many times I’ve had my favorite pairings go to hell and end up ruining the comic for me.

      Yes because spending quality time with someone you care about (although how much quality is in getting drunk while watching sports is up for debate) and also clearing out an elevator so that same someone isn’t late for class are both mean things. Although the tripping in the hall in between those things may be typical of getting attention through meanness.

    Calling this right now. Next week, (tomorrow), we will jump to another pairing. I personally think it’ll be the long awaited Danny/Amazi-girl pairing.
    We’ll have a Valentine special with all three pairings, Sal/Jason, Billie/Ruth, and Danny/Amazi-girl that will involve love, confetti, and possibly at least one heartbreak. Not going to pretend I can guess which couple won’t work. Maybe he’ll make all three fall through and have us cursing “DAMN YOU WILLIS!” once more.
