Well suppose the user was running out of memory space and trying to delete pictures to get more space instead of paying to upgrade their service. Well, we certainly can’t have that.

– While Dorothy is deliberating over this, she runs into Jennifer, who “helps” out by taking a selfie of herself and sending it to Dorothy’s mysterious paramour, but ONLY after making sure Dorothy wasn’t sending lewds to Walky
– This photo, Joyce sees immediately and is puzzled by, but she’s also distracted and doesn’t think much of it**
– Dorothy eventually gets up the courage(?) to send the photo again
– Since Joyce’s phone is currently in Joe’s hand while Joyce and Becky dance and sing along to music that’s playing on it, Joe is the one who happens to see the photo come in
– This means the text is no longer unread, so Joyce no longer has a notification to spot
– …until today, when she opens the text message conversation SPECIFICALLY to reassure Jennifer that the photo of her boobs was “accidentally” sent to her, not Walky
Like, this is a truly impressive cascade, and I’m leaving out some parts (Jennifer’s nightmare, running into Alice, having a fallout with Raidah, spotting Ethan and Asher — all necessary to put her into the position of being here, now, to witness Dorothy’s flood of lewds for Walky, so that she can realize who her own photo got sent to and be distressed about it).

If it means “nervous, jittery, worried, or similar it is plain “English”, if it is slang and means something else, it is probably USA English.
It’s got connotations of “weird” and “unsettling” and “suspect”.
I’m midwestern– I think of it also having connotations of “sketchy”, but sometimes it just means odd or off (like a door or door joist can be hinky if the door doesn’t set right). I don’t think of it as nervous/jittery/worried etc.

Before that the last real talk they had was charting a guide to Joyce’s first sexual encounter. Joyce has actually been spending more time with Joe. That’s likely what lead to these recent Dorothy developments finally surfacing.

By “+1” I mean, yeah, I think Joyce pulling away from Dorothy to spend more and more time with Joe is part of what got Dorothy to start feeling more recognizably jealous. When Joyce was still jumping at the chance to spend time with Dorothy, Joe probably felt… well not less like a threat (since she definitely still registered him as potentially bad for Joyce), but not a threat to Dorothy’s relationship with Joyce.
It’s also undoubtedly important that Dorothy had already intellectually decided to back off and let Joyce be happy? Because she no longer had a platonic reason for feeling upset about their relationship, but the feelings were still there.

Why would we “delete” a picture by copying it into a folder the user doesn’t know about? We might want to let the user recover a file they’ve accidentally deleted, but then why wouldn’t we provide an undelete feature, or at least tell the user about the folder? Well suppose the user was running out of memory space and trying to delete pictures to get more space instead of paying to upgrade their service. Well, we certainly can’t have that.
Or the programmers are still working from the old desktop and folders/Recycle Bin paradigm, while Kids These Days don’t know any of that stuff because all is phone.
It should be mandatory for schools to teach kids how computers work. There are lots of really handy things even my shittiest laptop has been able to do that I could never do on my best phone, without ever downloading a new program.
The purpose of user data is to train our AIs. Why would we want to let them delete it? In fact, let’s just force them to keep it on our servers where it’ll be safe, from them.

I’d actually been assuming Joe had held onto Joyce’s phone since the previous night, since we saw it in his hand earlier when he was asking about her music tastes. (Not for malicious reasons, just until he could check in with Dorothy.) But the series of events here makes so much sense and really came together in a lovely way.
– Joyce mis-sends something intended for Rosenthal, Joe to Roll, Perfect Cinnamon (Dorothy)*
– Dorothy, though initially stunned, quickly shifts into annoyance as she realizes who the photos must be for, and goes to Amber for help deleting them
– Amber instead encourages Dorothy to send a retaliatory photo because she’s “a trash goblin who craves mess”
– Dorothy does so, but the photo doesn’t go through
– While Dorothy is deliberating over this, she runs into Jennifer, who “helps” out by taking a selfie of herself and sending it to Dorothy’s mysterious paramour, but ONLY after making sure Dorothy wasn’t sending lewds to Walky
– This photo, Joyce sees immediately and is puzzled by, but she’s also distracted and doesn’t think much of it**
– Dorothy eventually gets up the courage(?) to send the photo again
– Since Joyce’s phone is currently in Joe’s hand while Joyce and Becky dance and sing along to music that’s playing on it, Joe is the one who happens to see the photo come in
– This means the text is no longer unread, so Joyce no longer has a notification to spot
– …until today, when she opens the text message conversation SPECIFICALLY to reassure Jennifer that the photo of her boobs was “accidentally” sent to her, not Walky
Like, this is a truly impressive cascade, and I’m leaving out some parts (Jennifer’s nightmare, running into Alice, having a fallout with Raidah, spotting Ethan and Asher — all necessary to put her into the position of being here, now, to witness Dorothy’s flood of lewds for Walky, so that she can realize who her own photo got sent to and be distressed about it).

I had been trying to figure out how on earth Joyce managed to accidentally send those first pics to Dorothy instead of Joe. Accidentally tapping on Roll vs Rosenthal makes sooo much sense and finally solves the mystery for me.

Still, I love the Roll, Perfect Cinnamon setup. My * on it was going to be that I think it’s super IC for Joyce to have her contacts set up like this. A lot of folks just put people in by their first names, but of course Joyce would have both.
My ** was going to be that I think it is SOME sort of foreshadowing that Joyce was so unmoved by Jennifer’s cleavage, since her “crawl into them and be warm and safe forever” moment back in like 2012 is one of the moments Bi Joyce Truthers probably remember very clearly.
That she was unmoved by them could have meant a lot of things (and still can!), but it is currently serving as an eyebrow-raising contrast for her tiny wibbly whispered speech bubbles wrt Dorothy’s.

I think him giving her back her phone was probably something Joe did very conscientiously, because he IS trying very very hard here. It brings to mind how, when a tipsy Joyce flopped back in his lap to demand smooches, he immediately held up both his empty hands to prove he wasn’t so much accidentally touching her in a Lewd Way. And he announced it as such, too.
There is a (not difficult to understand & sympathize with) degree of self-consciousness here, which I think would exist no matter what, but which I imagine HAS BEEN magnified by conversations he’s had with both Sarah and Dorothy.
So, like, on reflection, of course he wouldn’t hold onto her phone. He’d have been too aware that that’s something Scummy Boyfriends do, and he is trying so hard not to be a scummy boyfriend.
