maybe
…
actualy, I just remembered the middling movie The Invisible, which was about a boy who “died” (got knocked into a coma somewhere) and went around haunting people until he found a girl who could see him and help him solve his “murder”
this is a much better version of that, regardless if Mike is astral projecting or whatever
clif
Regardless, I officially hate myself for laughing. Damn, well done, Willis!
Geno
Honestly I kinda liked that movie. I’m usually really cynical about movie love stories, but that got me for some reason

MIKE WHAT THE FUCK
King Daniel
Pretty sure it’s Amber/Amazi-Girl’s hallucination, again.
inqntrol
Weird moment for him to appear though.
motorfirebox
Just as Amber’s starting to blame herself for letting someone die seems like as good a time as any.
Diane
I think so too? Mainly because no one else is looking up, and even if someone important to me was dying before me, if some random stranger just suddenly snuck in and said something, after I had been kidnapped and attacked/told my friends were kidnapped and attacked, I’d be on high alert and at least looking as to where the unknown voice came from.
Rose by Any Other Name
I’m not so sure. He appears to be… shaded.
King Daniel
Appearance is consistent with his last hallucinatory appearance: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2020/comic/book-10/03-when-it-crumbles/contradictory/
And is not consistent with his appearance in Amazi-Girl’s memory of the Mike-drop aftermath: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2020/comic/book-10/03-when-it-crumbles/ninest/

LOL “Mike drop” 😛
Axel
yeah he’s not blue
Autogatos
He’s “in shadow” but he’s still all flat colors. Every other character visible has light shining on them from the top of the staircase, Mike doesn’t.
Yumi
Like, I know it is, but it would just be so funny (to me) if it wasn’t. Mike’s just there now. The whole fight and his injuries are never mentioned again. No one even questions where he came from here.
Dark_T_Zeratul
I dunno… I feel like a hallucination would just appear rather than walking in, and this kind of entrance is very on brand for Mike.
Yumi
Okay, but where’s Mike walking in from? Is there a secret bunker connected to the basement? Was that feature listed on AirBnB or did Blaine just luck out?
Rose by Any Other Name
I mean, he could have just been tied up in the room next door. Maybe Sarah just untied him?
GutterChick
He’s in the hospital though? Why would Blaine need to call to tell his goons to finish him off if he’s there in the basement with everyone else?
abacuswizard
The secret bunker is in a hidden pocket in Amazi-Girl’s utility belt.
BarerMender
A pocket of holding.
Caspar Mulders
It’s kinda like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”:
“Mike, you mean you could’ve walked in here any time you wanted?”
“Nooo! Just when it would be offensive!”
ValdVin
You just lifted my favorite line from that movie!
Needfuldoer
Exterior basement stairs. If you ever have to replace the furnace or water heater, it’s got to get down there somehow.
King Daniel
My comment with links is still waiting approval (any comment with more than one link needs Willis to check it first), but Mike’s outfit here is pretty much exactly how he looked in his last hallucinatory appearance, and not at all how he looked the last time we actually saw him.
Rose by Any Other Name
The outfit is a fair point, but I’m not sure how it stands compared to lighting effects being used on him now and not previously.
I mean, either one could be an accidental art error or an intentional fucking-with-our-heads, so who knows? I sure don’t.
pdp15
Everybody else has light from the stairwell as highlights.
But not HalluciMike.
King Daniel
Yep.
Needfuldoer
He also fell 30-ish feet onto pavement. Even if he survived that, there’s no way he’d already be up and about on his own two feet.
Chaucer59
The hallucinations I recollect from my DTs (understand, this was almost 40 years ago), always acted very slyly like real people. They opened doors and walked into the room. They often came in with real people, and I got embarrassed stares so often that I stopped saying things like “Of course I recognize you and Joe and Jerry, but who’s the new guy?” Or “Janet, why are you in Mare Island? Who told you about this? How did you even get on base?”
Alaric
If that were the real Mike, though, there’s no way the others wouldn’t be reacting to him. He’s just interrupted a very quiet, emotional moment, AND they were told he was in the hospital.
bemisawa
…Maybe? I’m on the fence, because here he seems to at least have shading. That would definitely make sense. I guess we’ll find out if Amber is the only one who reacts to him being there.
Rose by Any Other Name
That’s what I’m saying. Those are clearly lighting effects.
As for only Amber reacting – Becky didn’t know he was “in a coma” and has more important shit to deal with right now. The later also applies to Joyce. As for Dina, didn’t the Mike thing happen before she showed up? So yeah… everyone else is kinda occupied.
Yumi
It’s the same level of lighting effect he previously had as a hallucination, though.
ElectricBlue
Yeah, he does have shading in the sense that his colours are muted to match the dark basement, if that’s what you mean by lighting effects, but it’s consistent with other appearances in dimly lit locations, like this strip and the one after it: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2020/comic/book-10/03-when-it-crumbles/operating/
I think the shading rules for hallucination!Mike are to treat his character as a flat object, like a cardboard cutout, instead of a 3-D person. So he has shadows under his bangs and chin, but they’re solid black shadows that are part of the “cutout” design. And a cardboard cutout would appear darker in a dark basement, but wouldn’t really show backlighting like the other characters do in this strip (the light around their heads coming from upstairs).
ElectricBlue
It does kinda look like his arms are different shades, though – is that the lighting effect you’re referring to? I’d chalked it up to an optical illusion based on the nearby colours, but I decided to eyedropper it in Photoshop since I’m spending all this time commenting on it anyway – I can confirm, his arms are in fact the same colour. Hex code #757752, btw (which seems way too dark if you look it up but works in the strip cause it’s surrounded by darker colours).
pdp15
… and this is how we tell when somebody’s been in quarantine too long …
Sadeveryday
For the sake of argument, his shirt does have similar lighting to Ross’s pants, but idk if thats just how Willis expresses black shirts. I agree with you that he’s a hallucination.
NelC
Mike doesn’t have the backlighting that the other figures have, so my money’s on this being the hallucination/astral projection.
Needfuldoer
It’s asshole projection, he’s a hologram made out of flatulence.
Demolition Fan
Close, but you misspelled petulance.
Miri
Pretty sure if he really sauntered in and asked that other people would have turned to look at him too…
BarerMender
Especially after his smart remark. Someone would be saying “Hanky-panky you, Mike.”
clif
Too late. He has the last panel.
Zaxares
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s AG’s hallucination of him. Notice the complete lack of reaction from the other 3 girls in the room.
Cheshrin
Still HalluciMike, I think. Amazi-Girl’s the only one who looks up at him.
ReFlex76
Asshole dies, I’d wanna be there to point and laugh.
Melissa in MO
OMG…is it really Mike…or his astral projection?
James Rye
His projection, look from where he enters the scene and where the only entrance to this room is.
Marsh Maryrose
Amber hallucination Mike gonna MIke. Just like real world Mike.
Crimsonstorm
Fine print what fine print
Also I wonder if Ambazigirl will have the presence of mind not to talk to her hallucinations in front of strangers?
Doctor_Who
The fine print states that by reading this comic, we all owe Willis 20 Damn Yous a year, and either our immortal souls or a Dinobot for the Dinobot shelf.
Deanatay
Wait, that’s unclear. Can we get him a Grimlock, or does it have to be Dinobot?
Roborat
Would it be okay if I got a knockoff instead?
Undrave
Probably that it only applied to characters who appeared in the original Walkyverse? Maybe?
Doctor_Who
Ross did though, he made his debut in Joyce and Walky. Maybe only in the subscription strips, though.
redfuzzy
I think the fine print was the reason for the rule: cause of the slow progression of time in the comic everyone would be in mourning for the rest of the comic.
No one in the main cast is gonna mourn Ross so bad it would stop the story in its tracks.
Keulen
Yeah I definitely don’t remember any fine print to the “nobody dies” rule.
Sam
The fine print is that it can’t be someone who would halt the story in its track due to the slow pace meaning they would be mourned by most or all of the cast for long periods of time. Ross will be mourned briefly at best, not long-term, and not for a significantly large number of people.
Passchendaele
was very afraid to check today’s comic because I thought it’d be either sad or terrifying, and yet it managed to be something different and also indescribable
Passchendaele
I’m feeling emotions and eventually I’ll figure out what they are
Solenoid
That’s a mood
BBCC
Hi, hallucination Mike!
And oh lord, that wasn’t The rule? WHAT WAS THE RULE THEN WILLIS???
Fart Captor
No character would be killed, because the time scale is so slow the rest of comic would just be the other characters grieving.
Tbh that last bit was my first thought when it appeared that Mike might’ve died, but for Ross it’s barely gonna be an issue
BBCC
No, I got that but the alt text said this wasn’t technically breaking the rule. He said earlier he DID break one of the big rules so I was thinking that meant the rule he broke wasn’t referring to the no kill rule (or at least not here) and the big rule he broke would be coming later in the storyline.
Kamino Neko
He’s broken the no kill rule, but it doesn’t technically count because of the reasoning being that killing somebody off would derail the comic because they’d be mourning FOREVER.
Ross will not be mourned, at least like that – Becky’s feelings are no doubt complicated, but she’s already done most of the heavy mourning ages ago.
This adheres to the spirit of the rule while breaking the word of the rule.
Fart Captor
When somebody qualifies a statement with “technically”, that usually means that speaking more casually the same statement would at least appear untrue. Though I don’t actually remember what any of the other rules were, so if this wasn’t the rule he broke then I have no idea what it even might be
BBCC
Aliens? Revisiting a Walkyverse relationship NOT from a new angle?
cosine
alternatively they’re both dead and the comic’s gonna end
Lingo
Not to kill off a character the other characters would really mourn? Whose death would hang over everyone’s heads over the whole school year? I mean they’re mourning him a bit here, but they’ll get over it. ToeDad was a ToeDick.
Miri
I’m sure there’s an Oglaf strip kinda like that… (NSFW… This is a comic where the Archives page flags up the individual comics that *are* safe! https://www.oglaf.com/intermission/)
Ray Radlein
Ooooh. Right in the middle of the Fungod arc.
deathjavu
“No serious injuries” was a rule along with “no deaths” for the same reason (aftermath lasts forever), so Mike being in the hospital also breaks the rule.
Dark_T_Zeratul
I dunno… I feel like a hallucination would just appear rather than walking in, and this kind of entrance is very on brand for Mike.
