          When I went to college, freshman could get a single room, as long as they were willing to cough up the extra money. I think like $900 a term rather than $600, but it’s been a long time.

          I ended up having a double room for $600 for about half of my first year, but that was because of [events].

        Technically unless their parents live within 50 miles of campus all freshman are required to live in the dorms.

        Actually, there are a handful of apartments that are actually more conveniently located than most of the dorms, depending on where most of your classes are located. Honestly Read and Forrest are kinda the least conveniently located dorms on campus, over on the south-east corner, pretty much only the theater and music programs regularly hold classes anywhere near there.

        Meanwhile the stadium acts as a sort of bus station for the campus bus lines, so any of the apartment complexes near Dunn street, especially north of 17th, are arguably more convenient than Read/Forrest and at least a couple of them are possibly comparably priced, especially with roommates to split the cost. Less than a minute walk to the stop where all the bus lines intersect and there’s (supposed to be) a bus leaving every ten minutes, which means you can get to pretty much anywhere on campus fairly easily and quickly and don’t need to deal with as much weather or walking, and importantly you can pretty easily get back home from just about anywhere on the campus with no need for connecting lines. Plus there are a few city bus lines with stops conveniently located around there, too.

        If you’re rich enough you could have a dorm room and an apartment.
        Of course, if you’re that rich why aren’t you in an elite school, but we’re already ignoring that for Carla at least.

          Honestly I would imagine at her income level the school you go to is arbitrary as long as they have the general access you’d need to resources for learning. Does an engineering degree really mean more if you got it from a state school over Harvard when you’re already a billionaire? With that reasoning attending IU might be convenience or it means something personal to Carla like maybe it’s the university where her parents met or the creator of Ultra Car attended.

          Purdue University Indianapolis has a degree in motorsports engineering, about making cars from the ground up. Well that and a whole lot more. That might be more attractive for Carla, but at the beginning of the comic that campus was years in the future.

          At her level, I’d assume the point is more networking than the degree itself, which is why you find the truly rich at elite schools, not the local state college.

          But she could certainly have personal reasons.

          If your family’s money is in crime, various real estate opportunities could be used for money laundering.
          At my (large/state/comparable to IU) school, there were some students who had dorms and off-campus apartments, mainly international students. One benefit of that was that family members could stay there when visiting.

          It feels like Becky is one step short of a meltdown, and she is trying to be ok, and enjoy things. However if she is bottling up a bunch of emotions, and the thoughts that go with them, then she is going to really need Dina, and Joyce to help.

          Dina is one of a *very* few remaining threads in Becky’s personal life, and basically the only one that doesn’t really have a tie into her dead parents.

          Losing Dina would basically leave her without anyone close to her, as much as Joyce is one of her oldest friends, Joyce is not that close with her anymore.

          Becky is way more alone then she’s letting on.

          Generally speaking, I’m thinking it’s a 30-ish minute time span, with exceptions either way for emergencies like “gotta pee” or “I got class and my book is in there”.

    One of the many reasons why I am not a fan of adults having to share bedrooms (college, assisted living, etc). Being kicked out of your own room, which should be your personal space, is not something that I think highly of. I am just a big fan of everyone having their own personal space that they can be in if they want a break from people, including the ones that they are living with. I hate that financal constraints put a limitation on people having that basic capability.

      I’m sure there’s a ‘roommate agreement’, not sure if the boys dorm had a similar sign than like what ruth had or so, but i guess that’s one way to learn to be considerate with roommates . tho if you’re renting out a house or searching for an apartment or so, i imagine there’d be stricter rules and such if not just some kinda separated soundproof room

      Tho, morals and appointment setups aside, at this point i’d half expect some colleges to just set up a ‘sex room’

      I second this. We all have several needs. Safety, privacy, and rest from social interaction are all essential for maintaining our sanity. We each need a different balance of alone time and social time, but we do all need at least some of both. Forced social isolation is already considered inhumane, but forced social interaction should be the same. Give people a place to hide!

        We actually support other animals in this more than we support humans. Giving your pet a “place to hide” is high on the list of husbandry requirements. Everyone deserves to curl up in their den and be alone.

          I fully expect that if my children come and interrupt my “curling up in bed hiding” time they should join me under the blankets in the dark. Turning on lights is rude.

          The amount of times I would spook roommates by moving quietly in the dark or sitting in the living room in the dark is surprisingly high. Part of that is that I grew up in a rural area, where it is literally pitch black when there is no moon. Any area with street lights or city lights normally gives me enough light to do some things, as long as I have given my eyes time to adjust and I am not trying to read.

      If it makes you feel better, according to some studies the average duration of a sexual encounter is about 6-8 minutes. (If we’re discounting things like foreplay, aftercare or cuddling, that is.) That said, there are WAY too many people who think it’s basically all just about the coitus or other types of sex acts. I could definitely see myself setting aside an hour to account for petting, foreplay, various sexual acts, cuddling etc. during recovery time.

      Even I’d probably start getting a bit bored by two hours though. XD The urge to get back to gaming/geekery would start getting overwhelming.

      Maybe. I actually think Lucy and Joyce aren’t as similar as they superficially appear. Her relationship with Jacob is a perfect example to me. Lucy was never as chaste as Joyce even as a religious girl. Joyce even with no religion to be judged by is still taking her time with Joe.

      given that he’s having a convo with jacob i imagine that word was aimed at him tho i’m sure his mother would’ve checked in on him eventually unless it’s rare for parents to visit outside of holidays and visitation days (makes me wonder how many orphans go to college, though i suppose other than aging out of an orphanage , there’d still need to be some kinda guardian for legal reasons versus having parents dying a few years before you go)

        You don’t need a guardian for legal reasons once you’re of age as long as there are no disabilities which create a specific issue requiring one. I also don’t remember parents visiting campus at all in most cases, let alone regularly.

        Source: I went at 18 and didn’t include my parents on any paperwork – they just needed an emergency contact who in no way had to be legally connected to you.

    Jacob and Lucy feel… kind of weird to me. This is two people who were pretty adamant in just not leaping into bed with someone who leapt into bed together- and that’s totally fine and awesome if that’s what they want now! But it also feels like they’re also trying to then jump straight to “full romantic relationship” without any of the steps of getting to know each other and building a connection? Like they feel like FWB one moment (or more like… acquaintances with benefits) and like they’re trying to convince themselves they have a deep romantic connection the next, and we’ve barely seen them together. Maybe I’ve missed something about them together, but it feels pretty… rebound-y for both parties (which makes sense for Lucy, but not really for Jacob (unless the romantic affections we’ve seen were more long-lasting than they seemed?))

      she met walky and immediately jumped to “should I be interested in him” (admittedly, a very fair and even smart question to ask another person who knows him) then jumped to “very interested” (less smart) and basically started “dating him without telling him” (outright bad idea, verging on creepy albeit not her intention)
      I’m not as sure with jacob
      maybe he’s more trying it out to see if it feels right? maybe this is just how he is at the start of a relationship that didn’t start up within office hours by appointment

      Plunging into a new relationship headfirst actually seems in-character for Lucy. We’ve seen her do it before.

      As for Jacob: Libido can surprise you, prompting Reason to take a few vacation days to sort things out. There may be a day coming when we see him pondering: “this is not who I thought I was.”

      As a former “I don’t just leap into bed with people” (in my early college days) who absolutely DID just leap into bed with my future spouse, it turns out that “religious upbringing” + “dating people who weren’t actually what you wanted” was a heady stew of “not actually wanting to have sex”… and then you meet someone you really click with.

        That’s certainly possible for some, but convincing yourself this is the person you really want to be with because you’re just horny and want to be with someone is at least as common, if not much more so.

        It’s possible they just really hit it off and there won’t be any problems here, but it’s narratively unlikely.
        Lucy’s pretty obviously reacting to how the relationship with Walky went and frankly, I suspect this is a pattern with Jacob. We know he’s unconsciously flirty and while we know he doesn’t like being objectified and avoids purely casual sex like Roz offered, that doesn’t mean that it takes more than a fig leaf of relationship to seduce him.

    i feel guilty. i really don’t like lucy and i cringe every time i see her, but i feel like my reasoning isn’t very fair. i’ve just always found her kinda…annoying. she tries wayyyy too hard it feels like. i super love joyce and i know their traits can be similar. but to me, it feels like joyce wants to be everyones friend, and lucy feels she HAS to be everyones friend. joyce also is more complex and always changing, while lucy just…isn’t

    and now she has this thing with jacob which is totally fine!! but i just feel so guilty now getting nervous when i see a strip with him, cause now i worry that lucy isn’t too far behind and i’ll have to see her again. i feel like a jerk, lucy isn’t a bad person and i shouldn’t dislike her so much. i just do
