          Back when I was in college, the parents of a roommate came up for a visit. I has having a nice chat with them, when his mom said something to the effect of, “Well, I’m glad he’s doing well in school, but I didn’t send him to get a PHD, I sent him to get an MRS.”

          I kind of chuckled and smiled, and then went back to helping my friend unload stuff from his parents’ car. It took me a good ten minutes to figure out what the heck she was talking about.

          Going to college or uni for the express purpose of finding a husband might actually damage her chances of succeeding as they tend to act all desperate and that sort of vibe usually chases off any hopefuls.

          They are Christian schools. I live in Greenville, SC and sometimes run into BJU students while they are out saving us masses. Sometimes you can have an interesting discussion with some of them. But mostly they veer away from that.

      Apparently, at the school I went to, 50% of the alums married another alum, but most of them met AFTER college. The half-joke is that we’re all so messed up no one else would take us.

      Stanford claimed 75% – same thing, get back together at a reunion when you’re so broken and lonely the dorky art hsitory major starts to look pretty sweet. Also, reminds you of the good times, when you thought you were going to be somebody.

    Can I just say I really like the background/fountain bits. They’re pretty awesome.

    Re: content. It is pretty rediculous to only go to college.university for that purpose alone, I mean it’s odd in general- it’s okay if she’s HOPEFUL about meeting ‘the one’ but making it the only reason… mmmm.

    Of course it does happen, I remember there was a girl in my GCSE Religious Studies class at school who said the only reason a woman goes out for a career is if she can’t find a husband to support her- I literally laughed out loud said ‘That’s a good one!’ and then realised she was serious.

    I just kind of stared at her in shock after that and went ‘…Oh’ afterwards really though rather than called her stupid because I was suprirsed- shouldn’t have been in retrospect given what I’d heard her say about women BEFORE. I was kind of shocked that someone at the time still thought like that (it was 2003/04 I believe). But then she was pretty weird in my view- she was still pretty popular though.

    Granted, I live in a part of UK that is freakishly religious. (We are not a secular utopia people)

    That was back when I was still a christian but starting to get a bit more ‘moderate’ though, and she was the daughter of a minister in any case. But I’m not sure if that says much- Preachers’ kids as teens were either incredibly pious or incredibly henious in my experience. I’m SURE there are more normal ones out there- but haven’t met one yet!

    Still it kind of disturbs me, the idea the only reason she would go to further education and get a career is if you have no GUY to support you. That that should only be the reason to have a career ever.

    Nothing wrong with being a housewife, but if you start to say things like that (how it should be for EVERY woman)… I really worry. And secretly hope you never find a husband. Or at least never have a daughter (or instil it in a son’s expectations either for that matter). At least until you get a clue and realie what YOU want isn’t necessarily for everyone.

    Granted, as long as Joyce doesn’t state that’s what -all- women should do she’s still better than that girl in my class back then even if it’s pretty silly to only go for that reason alone. It could be on a list, even be on the top of the list but it shouldn’t be the only reason- there’s also the experience involved in the process which should be another reason. Not all that many people are exactly the same person when they entered as when they left.

      I’ve heard teens – girls and boys – in the UK spout similar dumb shit regardless of their religious background. I think it’s a teenager thing. I was raised pretty feminist (my mum’s a woman vicar, which can be pretty tough in the CoE) so this kind of unquestioned sexism used to drive me crazy back in secondary school. I just hope most people eventually grow out of it… (Like Joyce will, I hope!)

      My minister growing up had two daughters. The older girl was a friend of mine and turned out pretty normal, she just had more of a Jesus vibe flowing through her (her dad was a fairly laid-back kind of priest though). The younger one turned out to be one of those Internet Kids, obsessed with video games and scared to leave the basement. She had to be dragged to an arts school (apparently she was also good at art).

      In the one year I went to college, I didn’t meet anyone looking for their MRS, but quite a few other friends over the years have known girls searching for their MRS. One girl completed her degree, came home, married her brother’s best friend, and did what his friends called “marriage death,” where he just disappears from everyone’s social life after he got married.

      I actually knew a dude, a computer major, who went to college entirely to find a wife. He’s been graduated for a year now and hasn’t found her yet. I assume he has trust issues, after his frostbongo mother left her husband for another woman. As far as I can tell, the guy desperately wants to get married, but can’t connect. In my experience, desperately wanting a companion like that makes you unable to actually get the companion.

      Well if they fall for one another that means they are growing up…which means the end is near. I expect this story to be mostly about the status quo so they won’t get together until Willis decides to end it. Or just get so disconnected from college-age kids they start having classes about subject that don’t exist and he’s force to move them to adulthood or we start throwing tomatoes at him.

    Thank you Walky for saying exactly what I’m thinking. Yes, it’s her choice to do what she wants to make her happy and I’m not bad mouthing her priorities. If her only real goal is to find a man and get married, that’s her decision… BUUUUUUT… she’s spending hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars on an education that is going to go to waste, because all she really wants is to do is play housewife.

    I mean seriously… getting married is a great thing. When it becomes legal for me, I want to get married to my S.O. But I’m not going to plan my entire life around that alone and I’m not going to spend all my funds on treating college like a live-in dating website.

    Walky isn’t exacty much better. He doesn’t know what he wants, and only went because his parents made him. But at least he’s not limiting himself.

    Okay, let me make this clear. If Joyce was looking for a godly man of the Christian persuasion to marry, she’s at the wrong college. There are several Christian colleges where she could’ve gone to do that.

      Not technically, Christian schools can actually be worse. I go to a community college, UC Clermont. NKU is actually a good school to go to for Christians.

    Granted Walke’s excuse for being there is piddlin but a lot of people tend to do that especially depending on how insistent their parents are about being in school. Joyce however….I never got the desire to immediately skip single living as if such a thing was so horrible. It’s basically turning up the chance to view the world from a different perspective than that of being under the gaze of your parents or married which is doubly weird because her belief is that god made the world…hence it should be something to revere and view from whatever angles one can manage.

    Goodness, I really don’t like those women who go to college just to find a husband and then don’t finish their degree once they get married. Hell, I got married and had near the end of my college days and still not only finished my degree but am now working for another degree (with another kid, no less). I actually dated a Mormon guy in my first year of college and someone from his church actually asked me if I was going to stop taking classes once we were married. I told her of course not, I was going to work and he was going to stay home with the kids. Threw her for a loop.
    Ironically, I now work and my husband (not the same guy) stays at home with the kids…
