          Mike could very well be targeting Walky for reasons other than “He’s Mike.” Remember, as Willis says on his “About” page for this comic, “Please remember that not everybody reads my other comics. Dumbing of Age is intended to be a stand-alone work and is set in its own separate continuity, and so talking bunches about the old stuff is not only pointlessly distracting, but has been proven to be confusing to new readers.”

          I’m well aware of Mike usually acts like an ass for the sheer fuck of it but I bet jealousy and revenge are also reasons for Mike to act in such a way.

          @I.care – I’d put it a little stronger than a crush. He’d already told her he loved her, and proposed to her as part of that whole plan. But I think it’s always worth reminding, as much as we all go “hell, yeah!” when he targets someone we hate, he’ll turn on someone we like just as quickly, sometimes for no reason.

        This was my question as well. There’s been so many references lately that refer to stuff that’s well over a year old, so who knows.
        I had to check the archives just to remember that Joe and Mike had ever even met, let alone the punching every 7 seconds thing.

        Because he’s Mike, and he was bored, and saw an opportunity. He may have also done it to prove to Walky that he is, in fact, an asshole; Walky didn’t think that he was just a few days prior to this incident, when Mike ordered him some sort of pajama jeans online.

          I’m thinking more along the lines of “She may be willing to make out with you in private, but she’s embarrassed to have people know about.” I think Mike wanted Walky to know that Dorothy is ashamed of him and embarrassed by her interest in him. I think Mike wanted him to know where he really stood.

          He could actually be infected by Echinococcus Multilocularisis, as it is common to northern areas, and could have been specifically passed from animal to cartoonist (North Central Ohio is a prime area) to Mike. Unfortunately, Droncit is not sufficient to kill Cestodes in humans. Alveolar Hydatid Disease typically involves surgery and the liver becomes very VERY unhappy, much like Mike’s face.

          I wouldn’t wish it on anyon… NO – I take that back. There are sever people I would wish it upon.

        Actually it was the aliens who cursed him with super strength in another universe. Here he’s pretty much a natural born asshole, but I’m not sure if the reason Joe didn’t retaliate was due to Mike being too quick and Joe being overly concerned with going to bed with Joyce. However, I can’t see Mike being able to survive to adulthood by being as big of a prick as he is so he probably has just enough to hold his own in a fight.

    Walky knows what Mike is, and what he can do. But Walky has to be pushed under a steamroller before he worries what other people are doing around him, or thinking of him personally. He’s a good natured puppy. And Mike is protective of Joyce, I think maybe he’s throwing a wedge between Walky and Dorothy: because he does not like Dorothy just on general principle, and he does want Walky to clean up his act-Mike is an a**hole supream, but he’s neat.

    Mike is basically a Sith Lord. He didn’t actually ever insult Walky. Read the transcript. He showed Walky how much Dorothy is actually embarrassed by him and how she went to him out of a) boredom? some other unknown reason? and b) because she KNEW he was smitten with her and thus was a sure thing.

    I gotta say, I’m liking Mike in this case. I mean yes, he was a dick, he’s Mike. But what he just got Dorothy to do was prove how embarassed she is of Walky. Walky deserves a girl that isn’t going to hide him, and whether he meant to or not, Mike is forcing that to become an issue. He’s forcing Walky to acquire some backbone.

    Mind you, Mike’s hit in this time was as cold and calculated as a sniper, gotta hand it to him. I think this is to do with the pj trousers, but I don’t want to say that and look like a fool later. I’m not very good at working out Mike ^^;

    Ok, I admit it; I’m confused. Why exactly is this hurting Walky? I looked through the comments for any indication, but all I found was a mass of “poor Walky”s and “Mike is such a jerk”s and no explanation for why either of those are true. It feels like I’m the only one who doesn’t immediately understand this.

      Everything leading up to this strip (butt-taco…food on his shirt…hoodie around his waist) was showing how society thinks Walky should be ashamed of himself. By his actions, Mike actually MADE Walky ashamed of himself, in an incredibly indelicate way, painfully compounded with the realization (again, courtesy of Mike) that Dorothy was also ashamed of him.

      Well, not so much. If he didn’t tell Dorothy, she wouldn’t get what part she played. Before she was angry at Mike and if he’s just walked out she would have set there fuming over what an asshole Mike is. By telling her, Mike made her realize that she just crushed Walky, which kind of makes her the asshole.

    It’s not that this is out of character for Mike or anything, but I still find it strange. Usually his schemes are to prove some ridiculous point like “I can sleep with your mom, even if that seems implausible.” My only guess here is that the point is “No PDA, it annoys me.”

    There are times where I do not approve of Mike’s assholery, and this is one of them. I find it difficult to think of a reason why Mike would go after Walky like that; even for Mike, targeting someone, just for the sake of being a jerk, is against his character.

      Mile did this for the sole reason that:

      1) Walky said he didn’t think Mike was an asshole. Mike has a reputation to maintain.

      2) Dorothy was being hypocritical. That’s like tossing a baby bird with its wings broken in front of a slaving dingo; Mike is contractually obligated to strike.

      Okay, that might not be a [i]sole[/i] reason.

      The interesting thing to note is, Mike went out of his way to sit in a class he’s not in specifically to do this. This means he presciently knew that Dorothy would give him a chance to blast her. Abductee or not, Mike is omniscient regarding assholery.

        You make a good point. Being an asshole is not a good enough reason to go out of your way to attend this class and drop some dickish lines on Dorothy and Walky. There must have been some nerds in the quad he could have tripped and some chicks’ asses he could have grabbed whilst he was just sitting there in that class. This was like a strategic strike, plotted with patience.

    Nobody notices the interesting turn of events here from a gender studies perspective? Dorothy, and apparently Leslie, assume that Mike is there to shame and humiliate a woman, when in fact he mentions two people and hits actual target was male. Was this assumption justified, or is it gender bias? Are Mike’s actions misogynistic due to treating feminine traits as negative? Or, in light of the majority of his other comments, does the focus belong on the full set of restrictive standards for “manhood” he is imposing on Walky?

    Well come on, this strip *is* set in the context of a gender studies class.
