And when weāve seen him and Raidah together, what hints are there that itās a good relationship? Where is the chemistry, the spark, the want for each other? Itās almost completely absent. Jacob very much reads to me like someone using his and Raidahās similarities- āwe need to work hard and not get distracted from thatā- as a shield. Again, I may be misreading it, but we can see how their similarities in my theory are being used unhealthily.
Of course, with people no generalising rule is absolute, but yeah, āopposites attractā is common enough to be a useful well-known phrase, and not just about pure sexual attraction. (In fact, many people WILL date the opposites theyāre attracted to.)

But considering Mike doesn’t do commitment, the most likely way this will end up is with Danny and Ethan talking about their feelings and getting together? Or worst case scenario Ethan gets to explore his sexuality a little more and Danny remains mildly jealous. It’s not like Mike and Ethan are going to actually get together in anything long-term.
There are two take-aways from this comic, at least in my view:

Honestly though, thatās what I want to see- Ethan to walk away without being screwed over, with Mike having developed real feelings for him. But I never try to predict what will happen, because I know Iāll likely be wrong!

So I have to wonder if Mike will actually succeed in driving away his most forgiving friend with this, and actually find himself alone. And Honestly. I was here for the Iconic Ruth and Billie Kiss. That strip meant a lot to me. This? I am about this for different reasons.
Like it is Mike, even if itās for fun itās also a manipulative plot to break peopleās spirits, everything he does comes with a side of assholery that also often has some sage moral wisdom buried in there
I mean. To be fair, Mike’s plan here only really extends to “Make Danny Jealous”. But considering Mike doesn’t do commitment, the most likely way this will end up is with Danny and Ethan talking about their feelings and getting together? Or worst case scenario Ethan gets to explore his sexuality a little more and Danny remains mildly jealous. It’s not like Mike and Ethan are going to actually get together in anything long-term.
There are two take-aways from this comic, at least in my view:
1) My theory that Mike is aromantic seems to be borne out. He doesn’t connect emotionally with people and really only does things because he’s bored and wants a distraction;
2) Ethan really doesn’t seem that fooled and is going into this knowing that an emotional commitment from Mike is literally impossible.
I am of the honest opinion Mike is a psychopath/sociopath in this universe.

Sexualities are the same across universes, and Mike has been shown to be capable of forming a lasting emotional and romantic connection in another āverse.
I would love to see aromanticism more explored (especially separate from asexuality). In fact Iād love to see romanticism being different from sexuality explored more, in webcomics (and other media). But in thiso case, I think itās probably safe to say that part of Mike is consistent across āverses.
As for Ethanās perspective, I think he doesnāt expect Mike to be establishing a romantic connection here either. Honestly though, thatās what I want to see- Ethan to walk away without being screwed over, with Mike having developed real feelings for him. But I never try to predict what will happen, because I know Iāll likely be wrong!

Having trouble seeing why people tolerate Mike and his cruelty. I mean, at least some of his shennanigans are known to others, so why are they still cool with him?
It’s not that unrealistic, when I was younger I’ve had friends of friends who were total shitheads and when I tried telling my friends this they were like “yeah, I know, buuuut…”

As much of a douche as Mike is at least Ethan feels comfortable enough around him to (1) acknowledge his sexuality and (2) act on it. Sure it’s not ideal but in a way this is moving forward for Ethan.
Sure, because Mike intentionally set up Ethan learning that he’d had sex with another guy on the floor as part of the prep work for this scheme.
I honestly think this might be an intention of Mike’s. He’s been pretty openly distasteful of Ethan’s prior return-to-the-closet scheme, and side-eyes Ethan doing stuff that’ll have him self-loathing.
I don’t think Mike’s a nice guy, but he is ultimately a long lasting friend of Ethan’s and Amber’s. If he cares about anyone at the college, it’s those two.
We know his intention. He said it explicitly to himself (and us): “I was waffling on whether to seduce either you or Danny to turn the other into a jealous, whimpering mess, so you it is.”
Mike doesn’t have friends. There’s no hidden higher motive here.
I really wish people would stop pretending Mike’s primary motivation for basically everything he does is to hurt people and any positive outcomes are merely a byproduct of that.

It’s no coincidence that Mike’s only “friends” (Amber & Ethan) have self-esteem issues and are reluctant to call him on his hurtful, manipulative crap, let alone cut ties with him.
I dunno, Ethan said outright to Mike’s face something like “If you’re my friend, and I’m 50-60% sure you are…”
And then Mike agreed not to do the thing Ethan asked him not to do… technically, anyway.

Also just mentioning something here: a long while back, like last year, <a href="http://www.dumbingofage.com/2017/comic/book-7/03-the-thing-i-was-before/skip/#comment-1201827" Cerberus compared Mike to Iago. Now I somehow completely missed this, which is weird because Iago is my favorite villain of my favorite Shakespeare play, Othello.
And now that I have that label to put on Mike he makes a LOT more sense. Just calling him a bully doesn’t fit quite right, though it demeans him in a way I like. No, Mike is evil like Iago is evil; he sets up these elaborate games with at times the flimsiest excuses possible, but he’s not really doing it for the excuses. He’s doing it to amuse himself, because he is nothing more than an asshole and all he can produce in this world is shit.
That being said, Ethan also summed up Mike pretty well when he mentioned that Mike doesn’t have “friends” so much as “people he’s willing to stand next to.” And Ethan’s the most consistent of those people. So I have to wonder if Mike will actually succeed in driving away his most forgiving friend with this, and actually find himself alone. Because I want to see what happens to an asshole when the world stops producing things for it to process and digest.
