          I think the phrase 2.5 children is a corruption of “2.4 Children” which used to be the average size of a British family. They made a Sit Com with that name in the 90s, I guess it entered the language at some stage and crossed to pond through the magic of the internet.

          Enough fanfic is garbage that any cost/benefit analysis will show that it’s not worth spending your time to find the one shiny quarter that got dropped in the septic tank.

          Fanfic should not be confused with fanart, which not only has a much higher ratio of awesome to awful, but is much easier to comb through since an assessment can be made from a thumbnail or half a glance.

          I don’t know about that… The summaries alone can often tell me if a fanfic is worth looking into or not and if I do check it out, I can scan through in a minute or so and figure out if this fic has any promise or not.

          I have read shitloads of fanfics in my time & while some of ones I picked ended up being kinda shithouse, most of the ones I have read ranged from OK to Better Than Canon.

        …yeah. As much as Dorothy has managed to avoid being that much of an ass out loud (so far), she has a significant amount of snobbery in her character. There are times when you can tell that “I’m too good for this place and these people” is right below the surface. I have little doubt that that’s the character flaw she’ll have to deal with as the series goes on. Still, I can’t help but sympathize even with the snobbery. When you work hard and sacrifice much to reach a goal, sometimes arrogance can almost be self-defense. I hope things turn out better for her than they did for Dorothy Prime.

        The penthouse itself is lego not the stuff inside of it.

          There are all sorts of specialty pieces these days, and most of them can be purchased individually at the online Lego store. See Pick A Brick. So Walky could have his Lego penthouse and furnish it properly without resorting to IKEA or any other non-Lego retailer. LEGO uber alles!

    Wasn’t Walky the main character of the Roomies/It’s Walky comics? (Haven’t read those yet.) Then why does he seem like the least developed, most one-dimensional character in Dumbing of Age so far?

      He was the main character of It’s Walky, but he wasn’t introduced into Roomies until fairly late in the game, IIRC.

      Walky always has been pretty juvenile, but college can have a way of forcing you to grow up. Much like being drafted into an alien-fighting secret agency.

      Oh, dear. There are so many possible replies to that. Let me distill them down to useful ones.

      First, he was not the main character of Roomies. That was Danny and/or Joyce, depending on your point-of-view.

      Second, this version of Walky is a lot more multidimensional that the “It’s Walky” Walky was. But in order for this Walky to properly be Walky, a lot of previous Walky’s uncomplicatedness had to be included. It will be interesting to see how the character will change and evolve this time through.

      I think it’s actually just being sincere. No reason to read anything more than that into it. He doesn’t wanna date her. It’s cool.

        Does he even know what he wants to do with her, or is he too completely brain-blown to figure out what these strange feelings are urging him to do?

          Considering his background and the fact that Dorothy seems to be his first, he probably hasn’t decided what these feelings mean for him no. I’d be surprised if his current analysis went terribly far beyond the fact that for some reason he becomes a nervous wreck around her and she’s not like other girls.

          If you’re talking something more biological then I don’t know. Does he know a mating instinct when he experiences one? Maybe. Most people don’t so he’d hardly be unique in his ignorance.

          I’d hope he’s at least aware of what sex is though. We do not need him to become this universe’s Joyce.

    So did Walky EVER hit puberty? I’m just curious about how much of this behavior is mental and how much might be biological.

    But hey, he said another two complete sentences that were completely appropriate to the topic of conversations unlike “I like don’t pretty things”.

    Meanwhile… a Sweet Penthouse built of Legos sounds really cool, but I’d hate having little Lego bumps and logos on imprinted on every exposed part of skin when I lay down, or stand on the floor barefoot.

      Okay, you’re not the first to bring this up, and I gotta ask. Does a lego penthouse necessarily have lego furniture? Because I’ve totally been picturing Walls, floor, ceiling and doors of lego furnished with non-lego furniture.

      Walky has always been a genius with deceptive appearances, but never known for his planning abilities. More of a split second decision making kind of guy. Perhaps that’s different now that Alien Tampering hasn’t rendered his mind incapable of forethought or focus? A Walky with a fully functioning brain could be… interesting. Interesting and frightening.

    I just noticed that in all the comic I read (This, LICD, LFG, QC, Penny Arcade, etc.), the words are all capitalized. Is there supposed to be a reason for that or is it a “just ’cause” kinda thing? Just curious, you know?

      I’ve actually wondered about that in the past too. I never know how to handle capitalization when quoting a character who talks in all caps. A lot of webcomics seem to do it. Most I might even say if I thought my readings were a representative sample of online comics as a whole.

      It’s because it’s easier to letter something like that. Most Comic Books are done that way too. It’s easier to read and easier to write out.
