“…you have an appointment at Red Cross, maybe?”

Luckily, Robin’s “CHUUURRRRRCH?!” arrives just then to remind her.
Took a couple of strips to hit campus, it can only travel at the speed of sound after all.
Needfuldoer
Let’s see. Robin’s place overlooks Blowjob Cat, so it would be at the intersection of W 7th St. and N Rogers St. That’s about 1.4 miles away from Read Hall as the crow flies. The speed of sound in 45 degree air is about 740 MPH, or .2055 miles per second.
Given all that, it should have taken Robin’s “CHUUUUUUUUUURCH” about 7 seconds to make it there once it was loud enough.
As if this comic’s passage of time wasn’t weird enough, now we have to account for strips happening concurrently, but shown to us serially.
Bryan Langley
OMG, I love you!
ValdVin
Maybe church is just replaced with another dream talk with Rich Mullins.
Also, I was one of the folks who called this.

I can only hope that tomorrow is Galasso’s turn to have a conversation about church.
BBCC
Oh, I’m thinking Joyce knows EXACTLY what she’s missing right now. She’s just a bit too snarky to not.
Regalli
Easier to act asleep than admit she’s having a crisis of faith and the music is triggering.
BBCC
I mean, she can be half asleep and still know about what she’s missing. She’s been going since she was born.
Alternatively, she’s pretending instead of talking about it and now she’s going to try to go back to bed. Try this ‘sleep in on Sunday’ thing.
ShinyNeen
Oh man. The sass, the avoidance of an issue that’s weighing on her, and finding it preferable to sleep in on a Sunday… you’re right! She learned this from Billie, didn’t she!?
JBento
I think she genuinely forgot – otherwise, the “thanks, now I have anxiety” is heretofore unseen levels of snark from Joyce.
Mollyscribbles
. . . might be sincerely tired; had trouble sleeping due to making the decision the previous night and having the crisis of faith then.
Shade
I agree, its unlikely she’s forgotten a lifetime of habit.
jeffepp
She’s sleeping in?! She can do that?
Doctor_Who
Just wait until she accidentally sleeps through a class, only to realize it was just a lecture for which the slides were already online, and they don’t take attendance.
That’s when college students really become college students.
dethtoll
Not taking attendance? Where the fuck was I for Not Taking Attendance Class?!
ruhrow
Ideally, wherever the fuck you wanted to be, and not in NTA Class!
Bladeglory
Now will she go with Walky’s “I AM A LIVING GOD.” or Dorothy’s “EEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGG”?
Tacos
A combination of both: “I AM A LIVING EEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGG.”
Needfuldoer
Aren’t we all?
Keulen
Not only is Joyce sleeping in, but she’s sleeping in instead of going to church.
Darkoneko
at first i assumed the problem was that usually it’s Joyce waking up Sarah, not the other way round, haha. But then the last panel happened.
BarerMender
Sarah: Church! You should be in church!
Joyce: *flips her a languid bird and turns her face the other way.*
davidbreslin101
The Languid Bird is rarely to be seen before noon. Dowdy in appearance, it is most recognisable by its call, a muted “meh, whatever, douchebag.”
Mra
Oooooh no. This seems so wrong.
AnvilPro
Joyce is one of my favorite characters in webcomics
Bee
Seriously, I’m loving watching her change and grow
ShinyNeen
At least Joyce is taking her break from the norm better than Dorothy took her own from a while back.
Kravis
Sarah feels like Joyce is really missing out by not going to her traditional crucifixion.
ninja_jesus
A crisis of faith/depression-sleep in combo? Oh boy, she’s gonna be in it deep.
Kyrik Michalowski
I wonder if Joyce has actually forgotten to go to church or if she is just not wanting to go. If she has forgotten, I wonder what her reaction will be when she realizes it.
Schpoonman
I feel like it’s both. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her forget church before, so the very fact it’s slipped her mind is telling about her feelings. She took yesterday with a sort of grim stoicism (by her standards, but I still think it will be a while before she doesn’t feel guilty.
tirachokko
I feel like she’s probably just consciously taking time away from church, and honestly, mood.
Yotomoe
Oh shit. OH SHIT I CAN’T BELIEVE SHE FORGOT! They’re RERUNNING last night’s premier episodes of Dexter & MM this morning!!!
ShinyNeen
Nah, no worries. This is the future! She can watch the new episodes whenever she’s ready by using her *favorite streaming service!
*Dexter & Monkey Master is held exclusively by one service that offers absolutely no other good shows
Yotomoe
Damnit they put it on Virve
clif
😀
King Daniel
I mean, we’ve seen D&MM on Netflix in this ‘verse, if I remember right. 😛
Needfuldoer
Eh, Netflix has content come and go all the time. If you want to be sure you can watch anything any time, you need to subscribe to enough streaming services to bring the cost back up to traditional cable TV levels.
Or just keep buying DVDs.
thejeff
See it’s the DVDs. I don’t want to buy them, because they’re ridiculously expensive and there’s very little I want to watch more than once.
But back in the day I could go to the local rental place and get a pretty good selection, at least of recent popular stuff. Then Netflix started with DVDs by mail and that was great – relatively cheap, great selection and their early streaming model followed that path.
Now the various competing streaming services are completing their switch from the video rental model to the cable TV model and that’s going to piss everyone off, just like cable did. 🙂
It’s not just that content comes and goes, it’s that they’re all locking down new content to their own services or to exclusive deals.
Needfuldoer
Buy used. Seriously, I’ve built a solid collection from thrift stores and pawn shops, one $3 TV season box set at a time. (I don’t watch a lot of movies, but there’s a lot more of them at the stores than TV series.) Used DVDs online aren’t as good a deal, once you factor in shipping. (I’d make an exception for those “$20 for 50 random loose discs” bundles, they can be fun.) MovieStop was pretty decent, but they closed all the ones in my area. Once you’re bored you can always donate them back (and usually get some kind of thank-you coupon).
Of course most public libraries also have DVDs and CDs, and thanks to inter-library loans you can can draw from an entire region instead of one building.
Freemage
Yes, but the direct-to-video movies are now only available on a DIFFERENT streaming service. And the imminent reboot will be launching on a third. (I’ve never seen an industry so hell-bent on self-cannibalization as streaming services.)
BBCC
And they wonder why piracy is coming back.
JBento
The same is true for video games: if there’s one thing a rich person said that was true, was when GabeN said that piracy is mostly a service problem. Before Steam, my options were:
a) drive half an hour to the nearest gamestore, which may or may not have the game I wanted (probably not), buy the game, and drive half an hour back;
b) drive half an hour to the train station, take a 1.5 hours train trip to the capital, get to that gamestore which may or may not have the game I wanted (even chance), buy the game, make the entire journey back; or
c) have the computer spend a bunch of hours downloading the game from a pirate site without spending any of my time and money.
Fortunately, Portugal is quite warm and none of those trips had to be taken in the snow (or uphill, both ways), but still.
Streaming services now seem to be headed in the direction of:
a) pay for half a dozen of them so you can watch like one show of each (a few more shows from Disney+, I s’pose); or
b) pay for none of them and just dl and/or watch from pirate sites.
Inahc
C) pay for one or two that used to be good and pirate the rest 🙂
Needfuldoer
D) Collect secondhand DVDs. I’m not sure what that market looks like in Europe, but here in the states you can get entire TV seasons at thrift stores for under $5 each. Even new ones can be cheap; some shows up through the early 90s are down to $20 for the entire run in a box set.
The only streaming exclusive I feel like I’m missing out on is Star Trek: Discovery, but I’m not paying for CBS All Access just for that. Prime has all the older series, anyway.
Inahc
And then rip them before they’re too corrupted. I decided to finish watching ds9 a year or two ago, and our 7-year-old dvds were so corrupted about a tenth of the episodes were unwatchable. 🙁
Although that might be the fault of whoever borrowed them for a year… Some had fingerprints, dirt or even food on them! >.< But even some clean ones were corrupted.
Needfuldoer
Do that anyway, and you can watch them on whichever device you want. If you get really fancy and set up something like Plex, you can basically run your own personal streaming service. Are you supposed to do it? Not really, but I think it’s the same as ripping your music CDs. It’s less bad than outright piracy because you’re still in possession of an official copy.
Clean the DVDs well, then hit them with some plastic polish like the kind they sell for clearing up cloudy headlights. That should get them to play properly again.
BBCC
When those DVDs become available anywhere BUT the US, I’ll consider.
Needfuldoer
Are there that many Region 1 exclusives? (US and Canada.)
Invere to that, I imported a Region 2 copy of Muppet Family Christmas because the US releases chop out half the songs. Fozzie’s snowman doesn’t just spring to life off screen, dammit, he does it during “Sleigh Ride”!
BBCC
I’m in Canada, but a lot of places either don’t ship to Canada or only do so at exorbitant rates, ‘region 1’ be damned. And yeah, that’s been a problem for a lot of European friends of mine – finding DVDs that aren’t region 1 exclusives.
Woomy
I wonder what it is
abysswatcher1993
Joyce is slowly accepting atheism and optimistic nihilism. What is next? Will she watch the new His Dark Materials tv series? marathon Adventure Time? Draw gay porn? Read a book about evolution?
He Who Abides
Perhaps even . . . MAGIC: THE GATHERING!
Dun dun DUN!
Mydnyt
Honestly? I actually know a couple of girls who accompanied their crisis of faith with a passionate interest in slash fics and smutty fan-art. It’s a relatively safe arena through which former “girls of conservative upbringing” tend to begin exploring their inner pervert
not someone else
Same. It doesn’t seem too uncommon. At least one used it as a gateway to accepting she’s ace and nonbinary.
SgtWadeyWilson
Huh… That’s nearly word for word my older sibling’s origin story…
Catullus
And Joyce does seem to be sharing in that interest…
Tualha
“Dear Jocelyne J. Brown: I really like your stories! And wow, our names are so similar! We should meet!”
Keulen
Joyce has already started writing smutty fanfics.
ninja_jesus
Honestly I’d like to see what kind of character Joyce would build in D&D.
Deanatay
She might wind up reading Good Omens!
Needfuldoer
She’ll start expressing her journey by drawing a comic strip based around the Julia Gray universe. All the characters will be based off her friends, they’ll fight aliens, and it will get published in the school paper. Due to the progression of time getting slowed even further, we’ll see one It’s Julia! strip every quarter.
Ferret
I don’t think this is atheism to be honest. I think this is abandoning her previous ideal of God. Which is good, because fundamentalist Christianity has a weird and shitty view of God. I have a feeling she’s going to walk away from this crisis of faith as a believer in Jesus and not in organized religion.
Shane Wegner
Hmmm, my initial feel is she blanked on it, her unconscious shuffled it out of the Very Important, Invisible Spirit Exists And Cares If You Do This category and into the Sleep Better Than category.
Secondary theme- how much everyone cares if people act slightly different than our stereotypes for them. Pumpkins on doors, skipping church, expectations subverted!
DailyBrad
I assume Sarah’s kidding, though Joyce seems plenty aware she’s not in church. I wonder if Becky’s not going, too, given Robin, but either way, wonder if she’ll end up calling or texting her to ask what’s up/tell Joyce not to wait up for her.
Reltzik
I assume that Sarah’s really angling for some alone time with other-Jacob.
ValdVin
There’s a bit of “You worship your way, I’ll worship mine” from Sarah?
wwwhhattt
I wonder if Becky’s going to go, meet and befriend Lucy, and then see Joyce become jealouse of Lucy in a way that mirrors Becky’s earlier relationship with Dorothy.
Tualha
I think Sarah might actually be serious, she hasn’t actually figured out why Joyce being here is odd. Her facial expressions in panels 3 and 4 look like she’s honestly puzzled, not snarky.
Axel
I feel like it wouldn’t have cut to the bible on the table if Sarah knew and was joking
Reltzik
