But by chance (or perhaps by insensitive comment), they met and joined, elbow to nose.           Anyway, I do wonder what you guys see in it compared to rugby. I am hardly a fan of rugby, but your football just seem like the same thing, except slower and more boring.

          Football is called football because you can only move the ball with your feet. That’s the entire premise. If making use of a ball and using your feet to move from point to point were enough to qualify a game to be called ‘football’, then /EVERY SINGLE BALLGAME NOT PLAYED IN A BOAT/ would be just as qualified to be called ‘football’.

          Wrong. Football is called football because its played ON FOOT, as opposed to on horseback like other games at the time the sport was invented.

          See also — Gaelic Football, the national sport of Ireland. You can carry the ball, but it’s still football (incidentally, Ireland seems to be the only other country besides the USA to call football “Soccer”, probably because football here refers to Gaelic)
          There’s also Australian Rules Football, an offshoot of Gaelic, where you can carry the ball but its still football.

          And on another note, who’s wrong with enjoying all or most sports? Why does one have to enjoy football to the exclusion of American Football? They’re both fun.

          Most sport are dumb, dull, pointless. Or at least the majority of “huge stadiums, and millions watching on TV” type sports. Doing some of those sports (as opposed to watching), can be better. But most of the best sports are things like cycling, skiing, rock climbing. Doing instead of watching, and none of this “win/lose” crap, none of this “team” crap.

          Also, um… you can’t use your hands in soccer, but I’m pretty sure it’s not true that you can only use your feet.

          For me personally, it’s about 50% community/family being into it. 20% fantasizing I could do better than the coach. 10% having something to talk about besides work. 10% nostalgia for playing it as a kid. 10% the unscripted highs and lows of following a team creating a natural narrative arc. I am pretty sure most sports aren’t enjoyed for the sports themselves.

        Association football (sometimes known by the British slang term, ‘soccer’) seems exactly as boring to me as American football, which is very. Also, while I’m not an expert I believe rugby union has way more players than American football, although the general rules are very similar.

      Uh, that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? They are slow enough for a drunk to follow. In contrast, things like table tennis or Judo don’t make good spectator sports.

      Everything that’s important happens way too fast to be seen in a haze.

      I don’t get the point of spectator sports in general. Why would I want to watch someone else play a game where I have no investment in the outcome?

      Football I find especially pointless. Other sports I can enjoy playing, if not watching; football has way too many stupid and obscure rules about what you are and aren’t allowed to do for a game largely centered around violence.

      The whole parents’ weekend story line has been full of jerky transitions honestly. Though this one is definitely the most noticeable. It highlights all of the chaos that is going on I suppose.
      The page itself is pretty awesome though. Good composition, color and dialog.

      Help me out, I’m a chump who doesn’t follow non-East Coast conferences and the whole “no free tickets” thing kind of confused me too.

        I don’t go to a big ten school, but I know ours doesn’t let us get in for free . . . we get a heft discount and special seating, but we never get in for free.

        I went to a MAC school, and we got into everything for free, as long as we had a school ID. (even non-students who were with us only paid like, $10)

        As far as I know, no, Big Ten schools don’t give out free tickets. Or if they do, it’s a scramble to get them. Like, I do know that Ohio State allows students to get a certain number of home game tickets in the student section for a significantly reduced price, and you have to be SUPER flexible about what tickets you want. (like, good luck getting one for the Michigan game. There are actual wounds sustained)

        So no, it’s not a jab at the schools being bad (not that I could say otherwise, being from a Buckeyes-fans family and risking losing my inheritance), it was more of an “oooooooohhhhhh riiiiiiiiiiight” comment.

        Though it could be a jab at the schools for being stupid swindlers, charging their already broke students for sporting events.

    I typed out a long rant about how much I hated the “troubled teen” status, but then realized that thinking about how annoying the dorm staff was didn’t put me in such a great mood, so I stopped.

    Needless to say, from my own experiences and those of others who happen to not fit into the stereotype of “idiot white rich kid here to party,” RAs are extremely annoying. Probably did not help that my university has a reputation for partying though, I guess.

    Great page. Lot of time on that background. I did read your comments Mr. W. and can see why Ruth is out and about. But, still….there is something very incomplete about Blaine’s departure.
    All that drama, and then he just peacefully leaves his daughter standing with a group of people after he had just attacked her with no regards for witnesses – in a room full of people, and then chased her down a hall.
    Doesn’t fit his profile, he’s a bullheaded bully who won’t quit, but he did.
    Glad for Amber, but get the feeling he isn’t out of the picture yet.
    Why is Billy p.o.’d., she knows she’s a *gag* “troubled teen”? Why did she come in the first place if thought she had to sneak in? Did Ruth drag her?
    Give up on stupid brother, he’s a waste.

    It’s funny, I have often said that College football is the real U.S. national religion. In Canada, they would have to pay us to go to a football game, the games were free, and still hardly anybody went to watch the games. Hockey, on the other hand . . .
