Here’s what Walkyverse Amber has to say about it .

That Amber’s a bit older than this one.

So, when are the Dumbiverse Amber and the Walkiverse Amber going to do an “Amazi-Girl of Two Worlds”?

anyone else find it odd that after like, weeks of danny bashing, he makes a very decisive and good decsion, (which even Willis acknowledged) and most everyone is discussing Amber’s vision problems? 😛

…good work Danny. you got me in your corner at least.

You’re not the only one. He’s not my favorite, but I still like him. I would put him in my top 10, right after Amber, Dina, Bille, Ruth, and Mike.

Also, the Walkyverse takes place, for the most part, during actual calendar years, since which contact lens technology may have advanced a bit to where we are today.

I find it amusing that the sci-fi universe has a more realistic portrayal of a real life super hero than the realistic universe.

Bit of a disclamer before my question/comment:
What I’m about to say might be considered as offensive to you and possibly to others that visit this site as well. Let me say that I don’t mean to be offensive, but I’m just extremely curious. And I can’t really word this question right in my mind without it sounding offensive eithe, so I ask for your forgiveness ahead of time.

Considering that you can read this comic, how do you adjust your screen so that it’s visible (or easier to read)?

          02/03/2014, 12:54 am

Are you trying to make the print larger so it’s easier to read?  With Firefox, if you operate the scroll wheel on your mouse while holding down the ‘CTRL’ key that will change the size of the font.

If the font isn’t sharp (fuzzy) that sounds like a monitor problem and might need to be taken to the Geek Squad.

          02/03/2014, 1:42 am

Only 10% of legally blind people have no vision. Someone who is legally blind basically wouldn’t be able to get corrective lenses good enough see more than 20ft away more or less.

Amber is more likely to be near sighted, in which means something close to punch is perfectly visible.

        6. Plasma Mongoose

          02/03/2014, 2:51 am

Exactly, one the legally blind scale where 0 is 100% blind and 10 is bare minimum reduction of sight needed to be classed as legally blind in Australia, I would rate an 8, which is why I can do things like shopping mostly without assistance but not be behind the wheel of a car.

Also , glasses haven’t been effective in improving my sight for several years now.

        7. Plasma Mongoose

          02/03/2014, 2:43 am

@Broken Products: I have a 27 inch screen which is less than 2 feet away from my face, I have set the default screens so it is gold on black to reduce the visual distortion, ticked the “Ignore font size specified for webpages” box and depending on the website the zoom is between 125% and 300%, that is how I can read and view images, even then I can miss details.

        8. ubun7u43v3r

          02/03/2014, 9:29 am

If you hold down the Ctrl key, you can then tap + to zoom in on web pages and – to zoom out. Note that this doesn’t always work for some web-based applications (like Java) but for casual browsing it works like a charm.

She’s probably just slightly near- or far-sighted, like she can’t read well without glasses or something. You don’t need to see sharp detail to beat the hell outta Blaine.

As someone with an astigmatism, I can do martial arts without my glasses, and my eyes are pret bad. Can still see shaps and distances well enough, and learning spacial awareness can work without full sight, or even blinded.

        1. Shade

          02/03/2014, 1:46 am

Same, though I might be blinking a little more than an average person based on how bright it is.

        2. RandomRedMage

          02/03/2014, 9:35 am

same here, astigmatism, i cant read or see much in the line of detail without my glasses, but spacial awareness is top notch. I think those of us with visual imparements tend to have a higher overall spacial awareness than those without. Just on the basis of necessity if nothing else. Need to know where things are, cause might not be able to SEE where it is. Helps navigating in near darkness too! 😀

        3. RandomRedMage

          02/03/2014, 7:45 pm

also, apparently when posting from my phone, I am granted Danny as an avatar. go figure.

        4. jaimehlers

          02/03/2014, 10:57 am

I had both astigmatism and nearsightedness until I got it corrected. It’s the same thing that they do for cataract surgery, except instead of replacing the cornea, they implant an extra lens on top of it instead.

And yeah, I can speak for the spatial awareness thing too. I used to think that I didn’t have peripheral vision at all (because my vision was too blurry), but after I had that surgery, I found that my peripheral vision gives me almost 180 degrees of sight.

        5. RandomRedMage

          02/03/2014, 7:50 pm

It might just be the way my head is shaped but, My periphiral vision, while like the rest of my vision not clear… I can actually see a wider degree of viewable space than most people I’ve noticed. I cant see ANY kind of detail, but I can see color, and shapes off to my side just a big behind me… it’s awfully distracting at times lol.

There are contact lenses that correct astigmatism. They are quite comfy.

        1. bix902

          02/03/2014, 1:04 am

I can concur on this point. When I first got contacts my opthamologist did not inform me that I had an astigmatism and every so often while I was wearing my contacts, if I stared too long at one area without focusing or just let my eyes drift slightly then my contacts would become unfocused and I would go “temporarily blind” as I used to put and I’d have to blink furiously to get my contacts back into focus. My contacts were like this for about 2 or 3 years before my opthamologist told me that I had an astigmatism and gave me weighted (toric) lenses.

        2. NeoVachel

          02/03/2014, 2:07 am

I can’t stand my toric lenses. Went back to normal glasses, even though I fight in Dagorhir Medieval Combat games.

        4. Smarmodon

          02/03/2014, 7:54 am

To me they feel like braces for my eyes. Like NeoVachel, I went back to regular contacts. My astigmatism is so minor, though, that it doesn’t really matter.

Keep in mind that even legally blind people can see “something.” We don’t know Amber’s prescription and most people who need glasses can see just fine enough unless they have to read something or navigate a playground full of children.

One of the best fighters I know is short-sighted to the point that he can’t clearly see anything more than about six feet away without his glasses, which he doesn’t wear when fighting. His take on it is, “When something comes into focus, either block it or hit it.”

Danny’s well-meaning, I think, once he gets a clue about what’s going on. But usually it takes him so long to figure things out that he Dans stuff up all the time. I wonder how long this non-Danning will last.

He will Dan things up so long as he doesn’t know the full story. Other characters have the capacity to understand events without being told, Danny either doesn’t trust himself to make that judgement or isn’t smart enough.
Once he knows, it’s easy for him to pick the correct course of action.

          02/03/2014, 10:59 am

My money’s on the former. Danny’s confidence in his own judgment is ground down to a nub, and he’s completely unaware of it.

Little gnomes exist inside you. If you let them sit out, they will escape into the world, your secrets safe. But if they’re in an environment that makes them scared to come out of their homes, like a dry desk, they will hide. If you put them under a microscope, they will tell the scientist who you are because you abandoned them.

        1. Mr. Random

          02/03/2014, 11:56 pm

But since they use gnome language, the scientist must use a database full of people’s names in the language. Once the computer finds a lingual match it tells the scientist what the gnomes are saying.

You’re ALL wrong. Amber is fighting type, and mega-evolves into amazigirl and gains dragon typing. She used a combination of Close Combat and Outrage. Blaine is dark type, an Danny is fairy type which is how he stopped Amazi-girls STAB outrage without getting hurt. Also explains why Amber was confused afterwards.

Using their local college kid dna database? Plus no Department is gonna process DNA for a simple assault case, DNA takes weeks sometimes months and crime labs have years of backlogs for rapes and homicides so there is no way time and money is getting spent on something low priority like that.

I mean, there’s also, you know, a witness– the victim. Cops tend not to use expensive DNA testing (which is also worthless if they don’t have the suspect’s DNA on file) when someone can just tell them happened.

Which makes me wonder just what sort of cock-and-bull story Blaine is likely to try to make this into.  He is, after all, an adult so his statements automatically get a certain amount of credibility, and if the only two other people who know what went on aren’t there to give their side of the story Blaine could spin more lies than a sleazy used car salesman and a crooked politician combined.

        1. Opus the Poet

          02/03/2014, 1:28 am

Well he can’t admit that a girl beat him up (even if that girl is Amazi-Girl) and everyone could see that there were 2 people plus Blaine there, so he’s going to have to make up some real cock-and-bull story, perhaps with a real bull in it to explain the beating.

        2. Robin

          02/03/2014, 2:47 am

A bit like this, except it ends with him beaten up, instead of him beating up the other.

(The newscaster in the bit in the beginning says that the pope used to be a bar bouncer in Argentina.)

        3. Shadlyn

          02/03/2014, 7:52 am

Theoretically, he doesn’t even know the masked girl was his daughter. No, if Blaine involves the authorities, I put my money on DANNY being the one he accuses. After all, he has Danny’s name. And he knows his daughter is friends with Danny, making it yet another way to punish her.

Dunno if Blaine is the type to go that route or go personal…but I’m actually kinda worried for Danny right now.

        4. Jonathan S.

          02/03/2014, 7:39 pm

And then the police interview Danny, and after they finish laughing at the idea that he could beat up anybody, they go ask Blaine what really happened.

I never didn’t believe in Danny. Mostly because I still haven’t read whichever comic of Willis’s that everyone already hates him from, and have found his reactions in this series to be generally rational based on his knowledge.

        3. John

          02/03/2014, 2:32 am

Eh. Danny started in the hole with me because of Walkyverse Danny, but I was willing to give Dumbiverse Danny a chance to prove himself – and early on he was; I was appreciating that he’s much less of a self-righteous sanctimonious prick than Walkyverse Danny. But lately, reading BBR, I’ve found myself hating Walkyverse Danny more because of Dumbiverse Danny rather than the other way around.

The main thing is that (alone among DoA characters; everyone else has the excuse of little to no contact with one or both of her identities) his continued obliviousness to Amazi-Girl’s identity has been trampling all over my suspension of disbelief for months now, the upshot being that I’ve been unable to find any reaction based on Danny not knowing that Amber and Amazi-Girl were the same person to be even remotely rational.

I’m really glad Willis finally took that out behind the barn and shot it in the head. It was seriously damaging my enjoyment of the comic, to the point that I probably would have rage-quit it ’round about Amber and Danny’s little chat at the bridge if it weren’t for all of the other characters and their plot threads that don’t have any fucking Danny in them. This thread going somewhere where I’m not pissed off just seeing one of the central characters’ stupid mug in the strip is looking promising now.

(I mean, assuming Blaine goes away for a while. But he pisses me off for entirely different reasons. I can enjoy hating Blaine.)

        4. Rex Hondo

          02/03/2014, 5:40 am

Now you only have to worry about whether everyone else around Amber figures it out or not, now that there’s a pretty good pic of Amazi-Girl making the rounds on social media.

        5. Tenn

          02/03/2014, 6:17 pm

@Dimonite: “Mostly because I still haven’t read whichever comic of Willis’s that everyone already hates him from”

That’s got nothing to do with it. There was never this big “Oh yeah, we sure all hate Danny, yup yup” thing before DoA. It’s just one of many bullshit reasons for hating him or pretending to hate him.

I would say Danny was less likeable in early Roomies, but only because nearly everyone was less likeable in early Roomies (Mary wasn’t; not possible). Joyce was a creepy psycho stalker, Joe was 100% horndog with none of the redeeming features he later aquired (or came pre-equipped with in DoA) and everyone was kind of one-dimensional and secretly Christian by Default.

Pretty sure you can be an accessory to aggravated assault just like you can to murder. Danny DOES know Amazigirl, and he did just kinda flee a crime scene. Also, calling Danny a hostage is kind of shaky ground here. He went with Blaine willingly and was never threatened. Worst you can say is that Blaine aggressively grabbed at him shortly before getting brutally assaulted by a vigilante.

        1. begbert2

          02/03/2014, 2:48 am

The worst you can say is that Blaine kidnapped somebody, and then somebody else acted completely within the law to use a measured level of force to prevent the crime (which is legally classified as self-defense, even if somebody else does it on your behalf). If Amber stuck around for prosecution, Blaine would be screwed.

        2. Luzahn

          02/03/2014, 3:57 am

Besides, I can’t see him going to the police with this. He’s a suspicious enough dude already, and there was the trouble at campus.

        3. nothri

          02/03/2014, 10:52 pm

Will he have a choice? He’s barely conscious as it is. I dunno if he’ll be able to recover well enough to drive away before the McDonalds people discover him and call in an ambulance and a cop car. I’d put good odds that he’ll have to deal with the police in some capacity.

        4. nothri

          02/03/2014, 10:34 pm

Umm, no. Sorry. I love comics and I love batman, but a real life masked vigilante going around fighting criminals is not “acting within the law” under the best of circumstances. And beating a man to near unconsciousness and having to be held back lest you go further and actually murder him is not “the best of circumstances”. On top of that Blaine, Danny and Amber are the only ones who have a clear understanding of how everything went down. Of those three, one of them was a masked vigilante who is probably already wanted by the police and fled the scene of a crime after delivering a savage assault to someone, one of them is the admitted boyfriend of said vigilante who would likely have to lie or refuse to answer questions to protect Amber’s identity. One would hope that a decent bit of police work would show Blaine was up to something sketchy and maybe punish him for it, but I don’t buy that Danny or Amber are gonna make it out of an investigation unscathed either. Initial investigation is gonna treat Blaine as a victim of assault and Amazigirl as the one who perpetrated it. And if it goes as far as a trial, so will the Defense.

We should all wish to Dan things up this much. Wows. Affirming and supportive, has a firm understanding of both of their roles, doesn’t question the facts now they’re finally out, has enough of an eye on their surroundings to point out things she’s missed (and their implications), doesn’t add to the already out-of-control emotions with further complications, and most importantly doesn’t add to the violence, giving her the safety she so badly needs. And he’s what, 18?

I’m kinda getting tired of the Danny hatred. Yeah, there’s a lot of “What’re you doing, Danny?” moments and getting mad at him for them is perfectly understandable. But people keep acting like he can never ever not fuck up. It’s like people think he’ll never get any character development or whatever, despite all of the character development that’s been going on in this comic for other characters.

But I dunno. I didn’t exactly much of the earlier Willis comics.

I support Danny, and I’ve been constantly concerned that he was going to be the only one out of the bunch who wouldn’t get as much character development as the others, and that he was gonna remain the butt of every joke with any redeeming qualities hugely overlooked in favor of irrelevant grudges against an alternate universe interpretation of him. It was about time he got a chance to shine, I think, and hopefully public opinion of him will eventually change.

For me, Dumbing of Age is my first Willis comic, so I don’t really know about, nor do I currently care, about the Walkyverse. I’ll probably look into it more in the future, though.

I don’t know if anyone brought this up before (probably) but Danny has a severe case of the Skyler Whites/Betty Drapers.

As in, the significant other to our Badass Protagonist With A Secret who keep getting in the way of the Badass Protagonist and are thus unsympathetic even if they aren’t in the wrong, from their own point of view. And who, for example, make decisions that we know are totally stupid, that will screw up both them and the Badass Protragonist, but that seem like the best idea to them at the time because they don’t have all the information because the Badass Protagonist is keeping it from them.

Obviously in this case Amazi-Girl/Amber isn’t evil, and her interests aren’t divergent from Danny’s as is the case of Walter and Skyler or Don and Betty, but I still see parallels.

I look forward to seeing how their relationship is affected by him actually knowing stuff now !

This is a cathartic moment for me. I identify with Danny; his occasional cluelessness, his unintentional assholery, his loyalty to his friends, and his naturally kind-hearted nature. But all the Danny-hate recently was kind of making me feel like crap for associating with him. Now people are starting to catch on that even though he may be an idiot at times, he’s also a decent kid whose heart is in the right place.

So, thank you for redeeming him, Willis.

I never saw him as a bad guy. Just a nice, naive idiot with enough good intentions to pave that very same highway to hell. I’m just glad he’s caught on to what’s going on and asking LESS questions in the heat of the moment. He’s had a really bad habit of trying to understand everything as it was happening around him. He’s now begun to understand act now, ask later when he sees a perilous situation, especially when it involves people he cares about. But yes, I’m beyond ecstatic that Danny now knows more about Amber and will be able to be more open with one another.

Also, that last panel…cringe worthy. In my culture, spitting on someone is the ULTIMATE insult. You could say anything about them and their mother, but spit on them, especially on the face…hell hath no fury like a Haitian scorned.

Considering that it is dark and raining, and people at Mickey D’s are some distance away, the description would go something like “male, approximately 20 years old, 5 foot 8 or so (and I’m guessing at that), light brown hair, wearing jeans and a dark blue long-sleeve shirt.”  In a college town like Bloomington, can you imagine how many people match that description on any given day?

Some of Danny’s spit gets into Blaine’s wounds, and mixes with his blood. This causes their radioactive* DNA to combine, which turns Blaine into the Amazing Dannyman: a genuinely nice, well-meaning guy.

Upon awakening, Blaine remembers the horrible things he’s done and (since he’s now nice), is horrified. He immediately falls into a trauma-driven comatose state, and when he awakens he finds his memory to be spotty in places: he’s blotted out the memory of all the horrible things he’s done, and in places fabricated altered stories to take their places where he’s an at least fairly decent, caring dad, instead of the total jackass he actually was.

A bit confused, he finds himself in the town where his beloved daughter is attending school, and tries to visit her. She reacts poorly, naturally; however (being Amber), she doesn’t really explain why. Her angry shouts leave him quite confused, which isn’t lessened when he is escorted off campus.

Thus ensues a saga where Blaine tries to reconnect with his daughter, failing to understand the situation because nobody takes the time to tell him about his past. The various comic mishaps and misunderstandings, which cause stress and trauma for everyone involved, will come to be known in the fandom as “Blaining it up”.

    * They’ve both used a cell phone recently
** All he remembers of Amazi-girl is that she beat him up for no reason while he was waiting to talk to Amber. Based on his accounts, plus the fact that she keeps coming after him, she becomes a genuinely police-hunted vigilante. Oh, Blaine!

Danny’s noblest quality has always been his loyalty, but it’s been hampered by two things: his expectation of the same loyalty in return, and his obliviousness. That’s why he reacts badly to perceived betrayal, and why he perceives (“sudden”) betrayal when others would have recognized there was more to it. Hence the rough breakup with Dorothy (“why would she dump me after I followed her here?”) Hence the anger at Amber “pretending” to be his girlfriend (“but she knows I’m with someone else!”)

Keep him well-informed, and you have no better ally. Leave him out of the loop on something, and you risk him acting in confusion when he gets part, but only part, of the picture.

I was so annoyed by Danny before this strip, even though I knew Amber hadn’t given him all the info. But now even Blaine didn’t recognise Amber….so I believe Willis’s point throughout the comic is that she was unrecognizable to everyone, not only Danny. Anyway, I really admire Danny in this strip. He doesn’t even have to think about forgiving Amber for keeping him in ignorance, he just accepts and shows his devotion to her.

And now hopefully Danny and Amber can escape from the looky loos from McDonalds.

For anyone who’s still on about the DNA thing:

Here in the state of Washington, we recently managed to convict a serial rapist. As I’m sure you can imagine, few crimes leave clearer DNA evidence than that.

However, simply having the rapist’s DNA was insufficient. The state only keeps a database of DNA if you’re convicted of a violent felony – and this guy hadn’t been. Unfortunately, this meant that when he was arrested for another crime, three victims ago, the police didn’t have enough information to detain him, and had to let him go.

There’s currently a movement afoot, supported by the three women who would not have been attacked had the rapist been identified earlier, to permit the collection of DNA on arrest for any felony charge, similar to the collection of fingerprints and photographs. Had this law been on the books, the criminal would have been caught earlier, and these women would not have been attacked.

Somehow, I doubt the state this takes place in has DNA collection laws in place – even assuming Danny’s ever been arrested for anything in that state…
