      B. Joyce actually DOES have a moments hesitation because of her upbringing and Joe internalises her asking him to wait a sec that he ends up psyching both of them out of it. He’s trying too hard to be supportive and accommodating for her first time but is also thinking back to Sarah’s sister and what Dina said about her time with Becky he’s clearly projecting and terrified.
      C. Joyce says Dorothys name during and Joe puts two and two together.

      It feels like Joe would get tested regularly and being a virgin Joyce is unlikely to have been exposed to anything so the only likely risk is pregnancy and if she’s been taking her pills properly . . . well the pill and a condom are better than just the pill but unless Joyce has fucked up somewhere the last statistics I’m aware of are that the difference in contraception between the pill (taken properly) and a condom and just the pill is pretty much a statistical blip.

          I mean, I’m kinda expecting it to? We already had a record scratch with Dotty, I doubt Willis is going to go to that well again right away, and Joyce seems to have successfully blocked Dotty out of her mind for the date. Honestly as soon as Joe showed up and Joyce lunged into his arms for smooches right in front of Dorothy moments after THAT, I was resigned to at least six months of angst before anything is resolved with this situation.

          Yeah, I mean, narratively, I feel like Dotty/Joyce is pretty likely to happen at some point, their relationship is too central to the series to just evaporate, and Dotty definitely has it too bad for them to easily transition back to being just friends. When it was possible that Joyce wouldn’t reciprocate and Dotty was staring down the barrel of being Becky 2.0, I think it would’ve been possible for Dotty to grow past her crush and move on and still be friends with Joyce, but after that bed scene, my money’s on those two being endgame.

          But only after a looooot of angst.

          Well, 0%, since the word you chose was “murderous” and not like “angry” or “hurt” or “betrayed”. SuperCorp is easily the most militant f/f fandom I’ve ever seen and they still didn’t threaten to kill anyone (to my knowledge, lol!). Maybe someday? The more normal it gets for f/f and m/m to actually Be Canon in media, the more shippers of those things will come to expect them, and be as weird and rude about it as shippers of m/f.

          (Which is to say, most of them will still be polite and normal instead, but the fringe will look more like the fringe of m/f shippers than it currently does. We’re not better, we’re just waaaaaay more used to disappointment on average.)

          Speaking for myself: don’t confuse my attempts at predicting the wend and weft of Willis’s narrative with entitlement to any particular outcome. I’ve been saying I thought Joyce wasn’t going to regret this and would have a nice night, like, this whole time.

Something characterful that advances the story needs to happen for a scene to be worth having, and I would bet on some kind of conversation in here that matters, but I don’t know why people are so convinced something has to go horribly wrong for this to be a scene.

          To be fair, an expectation that things will go horribly wrong can also come from occasional instances of “Damn You Willis” that then colors expectations beyond what is actually probable. And Willis uses this as a tool as well. Since this isn’t working on you (yet) I have to ask how long you have been reading his comics.

    But even if it wasn’t, I think eventually Joyce will panic a bit about not knowing what to do, will either purposely or inadvertently remember Dorothy giving her advice to try to help, including “just know what you want,” and then the action will stop.

    Or maybe it keeps going and Joyce is thinking about Dorothy throughout.

    I think, ultimately, the second one might be harder on Joe. Maybe not if he’s cool with Dorothy also loving his girlfriend, but I think it would really be a kick in the teeth for him to find out that Joyce was thinking about someone else. I remember the Slipshine with Malaya where it was really clear that they were just in it for the physical aspect, and Joe was wishing it would have been with Joyce… I dunno*, I think that would hit him hard.

    *The anticipation of Dunn Meadow had me do a double take at “dunno” and ugh I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. For all we know maybe they get interrupted by a frantic call from Jocelyn before she gets arrested and THAT’S what cock-blocks them…

    I want this to go well for them. Truly I do – I genuinely love this ship. And also my Spidey Senses are going berserk and it’s dreadful.

      I don’t really get why everyone keeps waiting on the Dunn Meadows shoe to drop, but protests in my state haven’t really ended in a way that involved mass arrests that would certainly have ended up on the news (and most protests I’ve attended and heard of have been in the last four months, not a year ago where the buffer was I think.)

      But wtf would Jocelyne hope to gain by calling Joyce mid-arrest other than traumatizing her sister? That’s like an egregious violation of older sibling law. Idk if Joyce is even old enough to get a bondsman in the room on her sister’s behalf or if it’s like renting a car and she has to be 25. I would really hope she could either call Hank, or barring that for obvious reasons that she has friends her age who could help her out.

      Basically, I feel like calling Joyce specifically might be a bad use of time and resources because she can’t actually help.

        I’m nervous about the idea of anything happening at at Dunn Meadow anywhere close to Joyce’s first time. We have solid evidence that she’s already got the Religious Guilt primed about premarital sex, and she may feel like it’s godly punishment.

        On the other hand, I could see that being a topic Willis wanted to explore, since it’s a common experience for people raised puritanically (esp women/AFAB people). My hope then would be that Jocelyn would knock that notion out of her head, and be like “neither you or a guy in the sky are taking my agency away here, thanks.”

        I do think the danger of the protest is often overstated here. The vast majority of people who go to protests, even occupation ones like this that will likely eventually be broken up, walk away without incident.
        There are certainly risks, but the chances of being gunned down or beaten to a pulp by the cops are statistically low. The chances of some tear gas or of spending a night in jail are definitely higher.

        Also, this is a drama series, so the odds of something dramatic happening are higher than in reality, but I suspect a good part of the reason for this set up was to get Jocelyne on campus and thus into the main cast for awhile, which suggests any serious fallout won’t be tonight, but sometime off in the future.

      Thank you for providing such a great example of folks being worried about this who aren’t, actually, like anti-Joe/Joyce.

      Clearly we aren’t all feeling tension here but it’s definitely not all wishful thinking, either — a fair few folks who have expressed nerves about this getting interrupted or going sideways have wanted that NOT to happen! (On a pure “what would be nice for the character levels”, I actively don’t want Joyce’s first time to be awful in any respect, personally.)

      FWIW I think we are getting a smashcut to slipshine tomorrow and then a different scene. Maybe not straight to next morning, maybe more Dorothy angst or Amazi-Girl adventures or Jocelyne at the protests (though I currently suspect the protests are going to stay reasonably vague)… and my previous thought that maybe we would see Jocelyne get arrested in a fairly peaceful way but need to be bailed out by Hank.

      (Like there’s drama potential there even without necessitating any police brutality or ICE horror show.)

      But mostly because I doubt there would be as significant an emotional / plot beat as Joyce thinking of Dorothy in the middle of things on the NSFW Patreon… maybe a tiny hint, but Willis has been pretty solid about doing plot stuff at least first on the main site and echoed in a Slipshine, rather than the other way around? I think?

      (I’ll admit I haven’t read the Malaya/Joe one, but Joe’s feelings for Joyce were already established, I thought, even if not super concrete…)

    Okay since the past week has been really fun for tinfoil hat speculation here is another:

    Joe suddenly starts having weird visions of Jacob as he does horny stuff which leads to him feeling weird. It get’s later revealed that Joyce is a sort of ‘awakening stone’ for latent homoerotic feelings and the only thing keeping the background gaydiation from seeping into the entire campus is her not realizing her attraction to Dorothy. This causes Joe to have a ton of weird feelings and needing to talk to someone about the weird experience even though he definitely enjoyed his time with Joyce.

      Joyce remains on campus, delightfully oblivious to her enormous power, having loads of sex.
