    I watch the clock, it’s 12 A.M.
The server’s so far from where we’ve been
I got my notes, I got my cut-paste too
I got to get ready to make sure I post through

I type the words and make a stupid joke
I kinda like it in my top place post
Make some crack about how Ruth is drunk
(or how she wish she really was drunk as a skunk)
    ‘Cause

    Songs last for so long
    Even after you’ve bombed
And I know that these songs suck
    And soon you’ll be stuck
    With a hefty bill
    And I…

    got bored of this

There is but the scoring has no consistency. And to top it off, the world is divided into those that automatically subtract a couple of thousand points from the way they hear their own singing and those that automatically add a couple of thousand points to their perception of their performance.

I say all this as an expert with no experience at karaoke.

“Dragostea Din Tei” by O-Zone (Numa numa song) and “I’m Not Okay” by My Chemical Romance. However, I once got my coworkers to do a group sing on “Bohemian Rhapsody” and it was amazing.

Anyone who claims large crowds of people spontaneously bursting into song in a musical is “unrealistic” has clearly never started singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” in public.

        Nope. Two problems:

        – I’m way too self-conscious

I agree. Do you think it reminds her of her parents and how she feels her life fell apart without them? That is what I was getting from it. Or do you think it reminds her of Billie and her regrets over letting her go?

I could probably make a more accurate guess if I looked up the rest of the lyrics, but I am very tired.

It’s a post-breakup song. It’s about the singer going about her daily life and things seem like they should be normal – getting better, even, in some ways – but she’s just shuffling through life half-awake, and it’s somehow all wrong without the person she’s missing.

“I go about my business, I’m doing fine
Besides, what would I say if I had you on the line?
Same old story, not much to say
        Hearts are broken every day…”

Similar tone: “I ain’t missing you” by John Waite.

          “And there’s a storm that’s raging
          Through my frozen heart tonight
And I ain’t missing you at all
          Since you’ve been gone away
          I ain’t missing you
No matter what my friends say”

          01/28/2024, 2:24 am

Heh, I’ll explain since it’s not that well-known yet, I think. There’s this videogame series formerly called “Yakuza”, now called “Like a Dragon”. The main protagonist is Kazuma Kiryu, a stoic and noble guy who keeps doing the right thing despite constant personal cost. And over the course of the last 7ish games/20 RL years, he’s seen a lot of loved ones get hurt and/or die.

The game series is also known for having tons of minigames, one of which is karaoke with your protagonists. And it’s standard now for these songs to include little videos in the background while the singer, as well as for half of these songs to be bangers while the other half are heartbreakers. So basically, it’s a deeply nostalgic and heartrending experience to listen to Kiryu sing about heartbreak and lost opportunities, because just in case you’d forgotten about the events of the first few games, the background movie very pointedly reminds you.

I don’t really fully appreciate the Japanese experience of karaoke, but it does seem to be an opportunity for someone incredibly composed and stone-faced to let loose with the deep pain they’ve been carrying for decades. And the voice actors do a fantastic job conveying it.

There apparently was a Japanese restaurant in Bloomington where you could rent a karaoke room, but they permanently closed after covid. Also plausible for the school to have a private karaoke room.

However, the fact that a song called “Ironic” contains a zillion broken examples not one of which is true classical irony and is therefore destroyed by that is in fact classical irony, which makes it very much…

So that song was everywhere by early 2010, but somehow– despite being in high school, where it was probably more prevalent than average– I did not really hear it, at least in full, until the summer of 2011. When I did hear it, I fully thought it was girl singing– and that she would be singing about another girl made sense to me, as the setting where I heard it was at a camp for queer youth. And then it got to the chorus, and I was like, “Oh my god, this is that song. This is what Justin Bieber sounds like.”

I was really confused as to A) why they were singing Mass Destruction and B) how they got the lyrics wrong. That explains a lot.

No no no, as in, I thought they were singing Mass Destruction (because gunfire and explosions), and it’s become so memeified that the “ooh yeah, baby baby baby baby” part is everywhere. But I didn’t understand WHY they would be singing that. Your comment saying the song they were actually singing is what made it make sense to me as someone who has somehow managed to never hear a Bieber song.

Jennifer really convinced her to go, although I think Dorothy accepted because:
-A part of her really wants to vent.
    -She had nothing to lose.
-Jennifer insisted and not in the right way.
But thanks to Ruth with that last dialogue, even the blonde shows a slight regret, although her body language also suggests that she really doesn’t feel comfortable.

So it looks like the scene is set up for Jennifer to get pissed thinking she’s being mocked by Sal bringing a boy who rejected her(unknown to sal) and possibly being offended if Danny is too busy glaring at Walky to recognize her. Meanwhile, Walky getting uncomfortable as Dorothy gets pissed about his presence and Danny being belligerent about another reminder of Walky dating his ex because he expects the bro code from a guy he was never friends with. Don’t know if I see Danny breaking up with Sal over this but I could see him asking her why she though he would be happy to go to karaoke with her brother so soon after the parent the dinner fiasco.

        2. Archieve

          01/28/2024, 4:35 am

Though if Danny’s serious about Sal he will have to accept that Walky is going to be around.

          01/28/2024, 9:03 am

That Jennifer and Danny can ruin it is a fact, but I think she would be more focused on fighting with Ruth, I mean, it is clear that she is also there by force, although I think it is just an excuse to drink.

It would be strange to see, but maybe Walky would try to talk to him in a calmer way, I mean, with the recent progress he has shown maybe this will be shown here and of course I also know that it will be very uncomfortable for Dorothy to be there , but at least see that she really has problems and understand that saying “your problems will be fixed by the next day” is not an appropriate way to encourage her, it was not intentional, but it hurt her.

Joyce and Becky are both pretty decent singers, thanks to all the practice at their church. Joyce has better memory and diction, while Becky has more range.
Dorothy tends to try very hard on the rare occasions when she’s called upon to sing, but never had much talent or interest in developing it.
Billie’s actually pretty good at singing, but in karaoke she deliberately tries to sing badly in order to fit in better.
Amber can’t sing to save her life. Amazi-Girl could theoretically sing to save someone’s life, but would still be bad at it.
Sarah sings like an angel and would rather die than let this information become public.
Dina has a few songs she can sing very very well because she’s practiced them a lot, and is completely helpless when asked to sing literally anything else.
Joe and Ethan are about average singers, and would probably have a lot of fun at karaoke (unlike this miserable crew).
Mike was the best damn singer you’ll ever hear. He could easily have been a rock star, but couldn’t stand the thought of having fans. He carefully guarded his talent, and only ever sang in situations where absolutely nobody would ever appreciate it.
Asher’s singing talents are about on par with Amber’s, which frustrates Jennifer to no end.

I imagine Robin sings very confidently, and either fairly good or incredibly bad. Other Rachel is outstanding in one particular genre, but I can’t put my finger on it. Joyce sang along with Christian Contemporary, Becky was in choir. Arnold doesn’t have a big range, but he knows all the lyrics a lot of patter songs.

As someone who’s never done karaoke, I’ve always wondered: do karaoke places usually have, like, a preset selection of songs to work with? ‘Cause I’ve always worried about going somewhere and realizing I know absolutely none of the songs they have because most of my faves are super obscure, and I wonder if Ruth found herself in a similar situation here. The only real reference to Ruth’s musical tastes before this that I can remember off the top of my head is that she had “Enter Sandman” as her ringtone waaaaay back in Book 1.

You can generally request almost any song, since most modern karaoke systems I’ve seen draw their music from the cloud … it’s not like 15-20 years ago when they were limited by the need to have a physical tape or CD to load into the system.  The difficulty comes when you realize that there are several different companies providing the tracks, and some are better than others, so you need to know just which company’s version of a specific song you prefer, and you need to make sure that you and the karaoke jock is in sync on this.

I’ve been to two events with karaoke. I have enough semi-talent but am very introverted, so I didn’t participate.

However, the backing tracks I heard were in the key of the original song, so I think that’s common. (Correct as needed.) If you can sing along with the real recording on key in your car, you have a shot at it for karaoke.
