Not so much missing a sense of self preservation as oblivious until the death stares triggered it.

John Doe’s a white male, age sixteen to twenty, five-ten, bout a hundred and forty pounds. Appears to have been beaten to death with unevenly studded blunt objects.
Warning: do not take a dose of Danny’s Right if you’re allergic to criticism or while operating heavy machinery. Side effects may include lack of sleep, depression and bruised knuckles.
There’s not exactly a nice way to call someone out for their hypocrisy but this is about as nice as it gets.
Someone's Ed
At least when you’re the target of the hypocrisy. If you’re a bystander, it’s possible for there to be nicer than this… but when striving to be nicer than this, it’s important to make a distinction between which “nice” you’re trying to be, because one of the definitions is really different from the others in a way that would be really pertinent here.
That said, I think it would be slightly nicer to say nothing while in public and talk gently about it in private after. “Now that you’re hanging out with Sal again, is there any way that we could be a couple again and have it be healthy and comfortable for you?”
Of course, the downsides of that approach is that it skates close to passive aggressive, and you probably need to have more certainty of character than Danny has to avoid a misstep into that, *and* in a one on one situation, there are no witnesses. It may not necessarily be easier for them to get away with it, but it’s certainly a lot easier for heat of the moment actions to happen.
Emily
Let me be blunter: there’s no reason to be nice when calling someone out for the bullshit hypocrisy they subjected you to and this is the best they have any right to expect.
There’s still a difference between being right, and being a dick.
Their emotions were true at the time, and they’re allowed to change. But if he’s trying to get back into that new good situation… back together with Amber, and friends with Sal… he’s not doing it right. He’s just being a jerk.
He’s allowed to call them out on it, especially when neither of them have apologized to him for being hypocritical. This isn’t even the first time he’s called Amber out on this specific thing, and the last time she backflipped away from the truth.
I mean, they’re both points that I and I’m sure plenty of other readers saw coming (one of which Marcie already made). I’m not shocked at hearing them–just excruciatingly shocked that we’ve heard them from *Danny*.
Doopyboop
Naturally, I don’t mean to make that sound as if I’m the only one who’s pointed that out or had that thought. I too am shocked to hear Danny point as much out, but it’s a good shock! It’s a point that has needed to be addressed in the comic itself since from Danny’s POV, it would be extremely hypocritical. Especially since both points lead directly to the breakup with Amber which was pretty unfair to him.
“Egg mode” in the LGBTQ+ sense is basically a way for people to refer to themselves before they realized they were “x” identity. I mostly see it with trans people, not sure if other identities use it as well. But as an example, I was 17 when I realized I was non-binary, so I might say that before that I spent 17 years in “egg mode,” or say something like, “when I was a non-binary egg…”
BarerMender
Thanks, Yumi. “Egg mode” was a new one on me, too.
Someone's Ed
A gay man in college referred to me as an egg. I’m male, and he was attracted to me (a point he made quite often, just to be sure it made it through my autistically thick skull. I think his lack of interest in women means he was hoping I was an unaware homosexual rather than thinking I was an unaware transsexual.
As it happens, I’m very mildly genderqueer, but my interests are decidedly oriented towards women. I was aware of my gender queerness at the time but unaware of the language to properly express it. The LGBTQPK scene at college was *not* helping that at all… and I do mean that limited acronym rather than the full one, and the Q they accepted was Questioning. I wish I had an acronym to clarify how limited their K was, but it was another aspect that wasn’t helpful to me because they talked like BDSM was only worthwhile if it includes all of those elements, and the D/s aspect is only real if it’s master/slave, and that’s so very not true.
vlademir1
Speaking from my own background in the BDSM community, I’m sorry you had to deal with people like that.

Your explanation of egg mode makes me think of the chick speech from Utena, which is appropriate in a bizarre way given the heavy lesbian subtext (okay, it becomes pretty much text by the ending, but still).
Mr D
Utena is notable because it is so blatant you could call it text from the beggining and it transitions into overtext by the end.
not someone else
It’s basically someone before they figure out what they are, though it’s usually applied to trans women specifically. It’s sort of “the stage before baby” as in the (mostly in-group) phrases baby gay, baby trans, etc..
Wizard
I wasn’t familiar with that one. Thanks to you and Yumi for the info.

There is a distinction between Danny being right, and danny Danning it up by stating the truth.
Equilibrium is maintained.

Danny’s been right pretty often in DoA.

Yeah, he’s right, but IMO he’s being kind of an ass about it right now. >_>;
And maybe that’s fine. Amber didn’t treat him the best.

He’s kind of earned the right to be imo. He was treated unfairly by both of them.

Yeah, that’s what I meant by “and maybe that’s fine. Amber hasn’t treated them the best”.
Just not used to Danny being any kind of mean. It’s interesting!

No, he’s already started to come out to various — oh wait you didn’t mean that in the LGBTQ+ sense. Unless you did.

I mean everything in the LGBTQ+ sense, but also in the callback way.

I don’t know what that means in the LGBTQ+ sense and I’m not even sure how to google it.

Sal didn’t force him to do a 180 in his support of his girlfriend. He did that of his own free will.

Which doesn’t mean I disagree with what you said.

Does Danny know Amber isn’t Amazi-Girl?
Dana
I don’t think there’s definitive word on that. He does know that even Amber finds it hard to keep them straight.

I think the more important thing here is that Danny thinks he is qualified enough to be judging Amber’s mental state.
