I never really got into Sailor Moon when it aired in my country…but then again, I was a kid back then. And back then, if you’re a dude and you watch Sailor Moon, you’ll be the laughingstock of the the other boys.
lightsabermario
Skip both and watch the live action Sailor Moon. Soooo much better.
Andrusi
Skip all of them and just wait for the new anime. That way you can avoid having 75% of the fandom tell you you like the wrong version.
The one where he watched like a few episodes of the show dubbed and decided her knew something about it? And calls the main character stupid and a slut because she *gasp* wears a short skirt? And talks about how lesbians give him the boner?
Yeah, I really don’t care about some white dude’s “informed opinions” on a story created by a Japanese woman and aimed for young girls, when he barely did any research.
Mr K
He did. He does point out that the age of consent is lower in japan, and he is surprised about the censorship of lesbians but not the sexualization of minors
Andrusi
That doesn’t make “barely did any research” accurate. If I had started out with the viewpoint Nev is complaining about and had decided to do five minutes of halfassed research and call it good, that information is probably the sort of thing that would pop up in my Googling.
Arkadi
It was well worth watching if only for the Darth Vader scene.
khrene
1) Why don’t you make a point to specify what was so shoddy about his opinion and research? What could he have done better?
2) He wasn’t commenting on the series as a whole, he was talking specifically about the cartoon’s impact in America when it first aired in the 90’s. So of course he only gonna talk about the English dub and how they made sailor moon quite ditzy, because thats what was aired. No one watched the Japanese version because it wasn’t available
3) You have informed opinion in quotes. Who said that? It wasn’t Doug Walker nor anyone else here. Doug just said his opinion and talked his reasoning as to why he felt the way he did/
4) Also most of the reactions were played up for comedic effect, notably the lesbians.
5) Oh yeah he never called her a slut. He did mention how her clothes were revealing for American (and Japanese for that matter) standards, especially given that she supposed to be 14. He could’ve mentioned that it was a Japanese fad to pull up ones school uniform skirt to defy uniform regulations, but honestly he spent more than enough time talking about the whole sexualization thing
The great thing is that she’ll completely fail to understand how depressing your life is and narrate it as if you’re a lot happier than you really are. And then maybe you can convince yourself that she’s right!
xKiv
Who wouldn’t be happy with Dina around narrating their life?
…except for the ones with dinosaurs, unless you REALLY want super-accurate and pedantic rants about everything wrong with them.
John
Doesn’t everyone want super-accurate and pedantic rants about everything wrong with movies?
… I’ve been watching movies wrong.
ninja_jesus
If Dumbing of Age ever becomes a TV show, I want Dina commentary for every episode.
elysecat
This needs to be a thing. Get to it, Willis!

I envision … no that’s not right … enhear? …. is that a word? .. well it is now.
I enhear her speaking in the style of David Attenborough but with the voice of Hynden Walch. Yup that is her al right. {glomp}
I see no flannel on her, nor do I see super day-glo, or crop tops, or weird mini pigtails with long hair in the back, or basically anything from Fresh Prince or Buffy.
Go back and look at portraits of Sir Isaac Newton, Louis XIV, Thomas Edison, etc. Undeserved smug satisfaction predates the 1990s by quite a bit!
Leonou
Wait, the frontman of modern science, the last French king to kick some european asses and one of the greatest businessman of his time do not deserve smug selfsatisfaction ?
Then who does ?
Speaking of her hips, it’s obvious that this isn’t being drawn by a mainstream artist since there are two women in the comic who are both legally adults, yet we barely see a slight bit of one boob on one of them, and neither’s ass is visible whatsoever!
If this were coming out of one of the main publishers, we’d definitely get at least one panel with T&A.
Roborat
Ah yes, the dreaded Liefeld disease, crippled many a promising superhero back in the day.
Now, now, Liefeld is only the most memorably terrible artist of the ’90s. There were still plenty turning out work with visible eyes and at least semi-plausible anatomy.
That said, you’re right, she is lacking the required gun twice her size…
(Though, to be fair to Liefeld, he HAS improved noticably. He’s still not good, but he’s not nearly as bad as he was. And he does seem to be a nice enough guy who actually loves and cares about comics even though he’s a bad writer AND artist.)

Sloppy seconds! 😀

Third! (Though I agree with Tunaro below, at the same time…)
Neospector
At least this didn’t start with “FIRST!”…
Tunaro
Give it a bit. Insulting each other and bickering a bit is part of the foreplay.

That shirt reminds me of Sailor Moon for some reason.

Your Sailor Moon is no match against the ORDO MALLEUS!
Aizat
Soundwave Superior, ORDO MALLEUS INFERIOR.
Mkvenner
Tau Superior, Soundwave a pile of slag.
Aizat
Decepticons Superior, Tau squishy flesh creatures.
Mkvenner
With godlike fire power.
Joker Two
The gods of the older, stagnant races are nothing but myth. The Greater Good is the true path into the future!
The Candyman
Every time I hear about the Tau I keep thinking of the Qunari from Dragon Age, even though the Tau came first.
Plasma Mongoose
Well Billie is as ‘talented’ as Lita/Makoto after all.
Aizat
Apparently, Sailor Moon sounds better than I had originally thought…which is not much.
Biege
the non-dub sailor moon is actually pretty good, if a bit repetative
Aizat

Billie is 4 years older than sailor moon.
I recommend doug walker’s nostalgia critic review of the show.

These two are a definite pair. They gotta work.
Rabbling Rouser
yay for self awareness

Awesome avatar! Did you get it randomly, or is it unique?
Kladeos
I think all the random ones are close-ups with transparent backgrounds.
Yotomoe
I honestly don’t have any jokes to say about this strip.
Opus the Poet
Daww, she still cares. (Who cares is an exercise I leave up to the observer…. 😉 )
Plasma Mongoose
We need Dina to explain what is going on between these two.
Yotomoe
Ruth is hiding behind a door, The Dina’s most common habitat.
TJ
“Billie is knocking on the door in order to gain access. This is a common tradition in all cultures with doors.”
Yep, we need some kind of nature documentary with Dina narrating.
Doctor_Who
I want Dina Commentary on all my DVDs.
Aizat
I want Dina to narrate my life….no matter how depressing it is.

Nah, Marlon Perkins should be narrating. Dina can be the assistant Marlon tries to kill every episode.
Pyr05
Now, I await the sniffing and realizing someone has been drinking.
Yotomoe
Ruth is a Boozehound.
Shadow12000
Calling it now, it’s both of them.
Kladeos
Ruth seems more serious about the whole thing. I have faith in her.
Roborat
Why is Faith in her, is she cheating on Ruth?
Plasma Mongoose
They’re both lushs in both senses of the word.
Gottawonder
5 Days? Wow.
Adam Lipkin
Seriously; five days in comic time is five months in our world.
Totz the Plaid
Looking super? Yeah.
Looking ’90s? I disagree.
I see no flannel on her, nor do I see super day-glo, or crop tops, or weird mini pigtails with long hair in the back, or basically anything from Fresh Prince or Buffy.
Yotomoe
But she is wearing her smug sense of undeserved self assurance and self satisfaction.
Totz the Plaid
Go back and look at portraits of Sir Isaac Newton, Louis XIV, Thomas Edison, etc. Undeserved smug satisfaction predates the 1990s by quite a bit!

Aizat
And I see no absurd amount of pouches or one shoulder pads.
Totz the Plaid
No spikes either, and neither “blood” nor “death” have been awkwardly shoved into her name, which also remains correctly spelled without any Xs or Zs…
Totz the Plaid
I mean, she’s still Jennifer “Billie” Billingsworth, not “Xennyfyr “Bloody” Deathingzwyrth”…
Aizat
And she doesn’t carry guns and I can still see her eyes. If this is 90’s Billie, she should have Youngblood’s disease.
Aizat
And don’t forget that her hips is still not in the swayed position.
Totz the Plaid
Speaking of her hips, it’s obvious that this isn’t being drawn by a mainstream artist since there are two women in the comic who are both legally adults, yet we barely see a slight bit of one boob on one of them, and neither’s ass is visible whatsoever!

LOL, I love that compliment, he sucks less now.
Gottawonder
No Yotomoe, I wasn’t, but now that you mention it…..
Keroshino
JUST FUCK ALREADY!!!!
