I’m still not really sure how this is confusing everyone. They are in their first year of college. The first two years of college (in florida) had several required classes which had nothing to do with my degree.
I just assume this is something like that, though I’m shocked to find that isn’t as common and universal as I thought it was.

I think the problem is that 1) that’s really only common in the US (and maybe Canada?) because pretty much every other country doesn’t require gen-ed classes at the university level, and 2) the gen-ed science courses are usually, like, Bio 101 and Bio 102, not “Human Life and Evolution,” haha, unless there’s a science elective or two required as well.

Having seen the effect of the required general education courses on myself and my peers, I am firmly convinced that some general education as part of even highly specialized programs is beneficial. Having studied the topic closely, Engineers Canada also advocates for general arts education to be a required part of an engineers bachelor education.
Near as I can tell, the people who push the hardest for there to be specialized only programs, are those who aim to profit off the backs of those who will work using said education. Something about unthinking drones making them money.

I don’t know, some of the courses that are specialized are so hyperspecialized they honestly have no real-world relevance or usefulness, but they DO make lots of headlines. just open your catalogue to the social sciences area, and you’ll find a whole slew of degrees that you can’t use outside of Academia. A good, honest, GENERAL Gen-Ed would be nice if it were offered, instead of feeding the fragile egoes of self-styled intellectuals.
And even a Conservative (though not necessarily a Christian Conservative) would agree on that one.
Then again, if they only taught kids what the actual powers of the President and Congress were, or what the rules of a jury trial and evidence are, or the difference between “Rights” and “Privileges” it would go a long way toward preventing the insanity of the last four years, because people wouldn’t be getting upset about shit they didn’t know how it works to begin with.
Then again, an educated populace wouldn’t have elected Shiela Jackson-Lee, Alexia Ocasio Cortez, Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, George Bush, Mitch McConnell, and so on and so on and so on.
There wouldn’t be a Swamp of executive orders, unaccountable agencies, and most of your Lobbyists wouldn’t be able to be in business because they wouldn’t be able to get people to fall for their bullshit or re-elect visibly and obviously corrupt scumbags.

According to my mom, who went to college back in the sixties (a REAL college, not the community thing I went to to get my AWS card or the one I dropped out of 15 credits short of an associates in geosciences because I met a girl and my brain stopped working for 12 years), the ‘bonehead’ classes are a requirement dating a LONG way back, mostly because public schools even back in the sixties weren’t delivering a good, solid, general education for your tax dollar. even back then, people were using them more as a sort of babysitting service.

I looked up IU’s general education requirements. Certain natural science courses with “substantial lab components” count extra towards the GenEd core curriculum, so this might be one of those.
Alternatively, Joe actually does care about biology. He wants people to think that he’s a horny clown undeserving of emotional investment, so his stated motives and goals can’t be trusted.

At my college you just needed a certain amount of credits from a course/courses to count towards a gen Ed requirement.
So say you need 2 points in a science based gen ed, you can take any elective course/s that fulfills that. (I was able to get a class on the solar system from my local community college that I took over the summer to count). Depending on your major you’d just naturally fulfill certain ones. Also things like AP Courses or taking a certain amount of elective courses in high school could count (like 4 years of the same language in HS could get you out of the language requirement)
