      I love Tex-Mex, and this would probably still work on me. Depends on how long it has been since I’ve eaten. I live off of Tex-Mex and Taco Bell; Taco Bell is not Tex-Mex btw, and confusing the two is a cardinal sin.

        Indeed, Taco Bell is its own thing, like a friend of mine joked it’s like eating a cartoon. If you treat it as what it is, that’s fine.

        It’s more just I am around nachos, etc, all the time, so bribing me with McNuggets or something else I do not have often would be more potent.

    Nothing can go wrong here, just a boy coming to hang in with his ex (in her underwear) instead of his girlfriend. Maybe Amber will leave the lights off and they can play video games in bed together. I don’t think Amber has any fucks to give about Lucy and her supposed ownership of Walky.

          Walky introduced her to his parents as his girlfriend. So no matter how long (or more fittingly short)they have been dating she has reason to consider him her boyfriend and to expect him not get physically or romantically intimate with other people.

          You have a bizarre conception that somehow being boyfriend and girlfriend doesn’t start until some additional time passes AFTER they’ve declared each other boyfriend and girlfriend? This just sounds like a weak attempt to excuse cheating.

          It also completely disregards that Walky already turned down Dorothy with the explicit reason being his dating Lucy. Like, he calls himself her boyfriend, he explicitly considers their relationship to be exclusive, it’s not subtext, it’s text as written.

      …that’s a weird way to say “Walky is Lucy’s boyfriend and it’d be a dick move for Walky to cheat on him”.

      Is it possible that Lucy stumbles in and is enraged that Walky is in a room with Amber when she’s in her underwear (and maybe he is too) with no misunderstandings? Yes, but feels rather unlikely.

      Is it possible that Lucy stumbles in and there’s a Three’s Company gag where she doesn’t understand what’s going on and jumps to conclusions and it causes problems? I mean, there’s a trope name for a reason, and wouldn’t be out of line.

      Is it possible that Lucy stumbles in and is just really self-conscious about things and it causes drama in the relationship that leads to its destruction? I mean, it ain’t called “Dumbing of Age” because the characters only make smart decisions.

      But either way, throwing down the word “ownership” when Lucy’s displayed little-to-no controlling traits regarding Walky beyond “i really wanna bone him” is a bit much.

        When I said “Out of line”, I should’ve said “It wouldn’t be unexpected”. Lucy would be in the wrong if she escalated things in such a manner instead of trusting her boyfriend and talking it out.

        I mostly agree but I wouldn’t go so far as to say little to no controlling traits. She has very clear and rigid concepts of what a Proper Relationship is and what she expects of Wally, and even if she has just been smiles and sunshine about it, it doesn’t mean that she hasn’t been setting a lot of rules and standards that Walky has amicably followed because he also feels like Lucy is out of his league and he should be following her lead and performing tricks to meet her at her level.

      Or, like most geeks with degrees of compacted trauma, she struggles to establish clear boundaries and say no to peers, and indeed the two people who clearly know she’s dealing with a lot of baggage that came up with the plan maybe shouldn’t have put that pressure on her in the first instance.

          (The USA is one of those countries IIRC and they are big enough that they can affect the marketing choices of multinational companies even in other countries that uses weight or volume instead of portions).

    Did we ever know walky to be interested in video games before this particular storyline? I know he is into certain cartoons (and comics), but I can’t remember him ever getting involved in other types of pop culture.

        I feel-like the only way this makes sense is if the Walkertons had a no video games policy. It would make Walky the kid who always had to go to his friends house to play games, so he probably developed a sort of gaming envy he can finally indulge in now that he has access and unsupervised free time.

          I was kinda like Walky, though in my case it was less “my parents didn’t allow video games” and more “due to being aware of our lower class life I don’t feel like I’m allowed to ask for expensive video games for Christmas so instead I’ll ask for more clothes and watch my friends play their video games”. Now that I’m an adult with my own money, steam is my best friend.

          I could absolutely see Linda having a ‘no video games’ policy. Video games don’t make for a productive future doctor, after all! Damn, boy’s lucky he was allowed to binge so many cartoons.

          I think it’d be interesting if it wasn’t, like, an outright ban, but more something Linda put down so much that it didn’t even occur to him. Like… “Look at those parents just letting their son sit around playing that game. They’re really doing him a disservice when he grows up. I’m glad you’re not like that, David.”

          Or he got a bunch of the more boring educational video games early on, and built a sort of sense of like, “Video games at my house are boring. Video games at my friend’s house are cool!”

          I don’t think its unrealistic that a teenage dude would want to play video games. Just that we hadn’t seen him express an interest in it before, and now he’s claiming that playing games on Saturday morning is some sort of defining trait.

          FF7 came out when I was living in a dorm, and one guy had a playstation(?), and multiple people would watch him play. First time a console game really tempted me to get one myself.

    It’s a bit unpleasant to see that Nachitos package in Russian flag colors. Not trying to start a political discussion – that’s just my reaction to the image. A quick Google image search didn’t find any real-life packages with those colors, either.

        If enjoying one Saturday morning on your own terms is enough to torpedo anything, it probably wasn’t meant to be. Linda will (regrettably) survive Walky doing something when he wasn’t already doing something else, and Lucy isn’t so insecure that Walky spending time with Amber will ruin their relationship. People are doomsayers.

      I don’t think it’s pessimistic to notice clues and framing devices, and try to form conclusions. None of this has to happen the way it is. Walky could’ve just chosen to watch cartoons instead, that’s on brand for him. Ken and Arnold could have better controllers. Walky could ask his sister who we know owns a used Nintendo if he can borrow hers, or Amber even could just be wearing pants. None of those things are what happened though. Even if everything is fine and they just chill and game, and Lucy comes and joins them in her pj’s and they all play Mario Kart I think it’s understandable to notice the story setting things up even if it’s just to play with the reader’s expectations.

      Come on officer, even if Walky and Amber just want to play video games, she’s his ex and isn’t wearing pants at the moment… After they briefly pretended to be a couple and Walky’s dad encouraged him to follow his heart, even if it led to Amber. Maybe especially if it led to Amber.

      No matter what happens, Willis has lain the groundwork for a drama bomb.

    Regardless of whether this goes to the most dramatic or dumbest conclusions, the fact remains that walky woke up knowing today was the day to properly introduce Lucy to his parents, and instead of getting dressed in his nicest clothes and texting Lucy or w/e, he instead has beelines, still in his pyjamas, over to Amber’s dorm, who is also still in her pyjamas, and effectively invited himself in.

      No matter if they just play videogames and eat nachitos, or he takes her Nintendo and leaves right away, he’s still most likely going to face some kinda music for this eventually.

      Again with this “instead of” thing. Why is it impossible for him to interact with two people in the same day? This isn’t Persona 4, he can hang with Amber in the morning and then get dressed and hang with his parents and hot girlfriend in the afternoon, it’s easy.

        I’m inclined toward the “instead of” reading because of what Walky said in response to Amber asking about his family/Lucy obligations. Walky seems to want to avoid all of that, which makes it seem like he is choosing to do this specifically to not be doing something with his parents and/or Lucy. Had he not reacted that way, I’d think both were the plan, but as it stands, it seems like he’s running away from something and choosing to do that here.

        There is little to no chemistry between him and Lucy, whom he is avoiding. And there is between him and Amber. I’m pretty sure his own sister has a video game thing, there are reasons he went to Amber instead of someone else, to help him avoid his girlfriend he won’t kiss.

      If I had to place bets this is where I’d put my money because Lucy walking in is the obvious dramatic moment and Willis often throws curve balls in these moments. I’m definitely curious to see how this plays out. (And really really glad I didn’t end up with my Walky-like boyfriend.)

      Poor Dorothy. I wish she’d gotten Joyce hugs when she needed them. I hope she ends up ok.

    I gotta say, it is insane how realistic this whole Walky relationship thing is. It is so like this guy I knew in college who dated me (a Dorothy) then someone not as messed up as Amber but similar in some respects, and then a Lucy who he treated terribly. This was over 2-3 years, not months, but exactly the same patterns. (Even the racism with girlfriend 3!) Without the kidnapping though. The next girlfriend should be two years younger than him and will do his laundry for him even though she lives across campus. If they ever get to junior year.
