      Buy a new pillow specifically for containing noises, that’s what I do. It works for screaming just as well as it does these moments of glee. Though I live in the middle of nowhere so my heighbors arw too far away to care about either one.

        Jacket came with the bike so it might serve as another suitable motorcycle jacket, and I’m fairly sure her gloves are all motorcycle gloves.

        As for everything else? Yeah, I’m concerned.

          You don’t wear protective gear if you don’t intend to drive. A good motorcycle jacket is stiff and warm. Like, really stiff and really warm. It’s no fun to wear them. That’s why I’m assuming the rutten jacket is less protective gear and more merchandise.

          Besides, with what I assume Rutten stuff costs, providing a jacket is the least they can do. 😛

          No, she was sleeping before going into Joyce’s room and learning about the party with Ryan.

          We’ve not learned what exactly her job was, all we know is apparently she didn’t have help from her parents. Which, fair enough, since that went SO well last time she saved for something big.

          Yeah, and it’s way too skinny to be hiding armor on the inside. And iirc her usual gloves don’t have fingers? Motorcycle gloves are like snowboarding gloves, big and bulky.

          No, most of her gloves do have fingers. I can only think of one set of fingerless gloves she’s worn off the top of my head, and she wasn’t driving then (and she changed her gloves when she was going out driving).

          As for the jacket – I dunno. It doesn’t seem any skinnier than her normal gear. It actually looks a bit thicker to me, but that might be the art shifting over time.

      The part of me who rides a motorcycle wants to know why. It’s sorta of habitual behavior for me and many others, to do it or not.

        The Doyleist answer is Willis wants us to be able to see her facial expressions.

        The Watsonian answer is that Sal likely felt she urgently needed to have someone around because she’s upset and Marcie’s not hanging out with her. We’ve never seen her ride her motorcycle without a helmet right now so I read that as Sal took off not long after Marcie left (because Sal always makes great decisions when she’s upset).

      At high speeds it can sometimes be more dangerous to wear a helmet because you risk internal decapitation. I don’t do motorcycles, because I am afraid of so many things, buuut I grew up fairly close to Daytona and the mindset seems to be if you’re on anything other than a highway, you wear a helmet, but if you’re on the interstate you don’t.

          That’s probably because of Dale Earnhardt’s fatal accident. (He always wore open face helmets, and NASCAR didn’t mandate head restraints at the time, so when his car hit the wall head-on his neck snapped and his face hit the steering wheel. Now HANS devices, those foam neck supports that limit head and helmet movement to prevent that from happening, are mandatory.)

      For what it’s worth, I grew up in the evangelical world very much during the “Purity Culture” craze, and this is not what I experienced at all. Even her definition, “The purity ethic is about defining a person and their worth as pure or impure based on other people’s assessments of their sexual lives, which is inherently shaming,” is not something I was ever taught. In fact, I was always taught that the only person whose opinion of me mattered was Jesus, and that the whole point of the cross and resurrection thing was that Jesus declared believers “pure” of all sins (sexual or otherwise). The goal of a Christian is to live in accordance with that “pure” declaration and to strive to be more pure in all ways. There was an emphasis on sexual purity was, at least ostensibly, only because sexual sins can be particularly tempting. Still, I was never taught that sexual desires were wrong, rather that they were so good that they should be reserved for the most pure/ideal form of sexual expression, sex within marriage. How I was taught, there was a lot of emphasis on the concept that no one had the right to force me into sexual situations I wasn’t comfortable with. Even modest dressing was framed as a way of denying any creepers the ability to see or lust over parts of my body I didn’t give them permission to, a clear form of communicating to others that I didn’t want that kind of attention from them. My brother was similarly taught to respect his own body and the bodies of women as sacred. Honestly, purity culture gave the clearest teaching to kids about their right to defend their own bodies and the importance of consent I’ve ever seen.

      I realize other people have had very different experiences, and Joyce’s experience is probably more like Klein’s. It still astonishes me how badly their teachers have managed to distort a message that was very empowering to me.

      I think if you believe all evangelical Christian organizations share ANYTHING in common among all branches then you do not understand them at all–and I include that Jesus is the savior. Each is in individualized and this is not a description remotely applying to large segments of this.

        And yet there are broad patterns. At least in American evangelical churches and especially if you factor out the black evangelical churches, which have developed very differently over centuries, during slavery and segregation.

        White evangelicals overwhelming support Trump, oppose abortion (and to a somewhat lesser degree, birth control and sex education), oppose LGBTQ rights. None of this is 100%, but that doesn’t mean you can’t talk about these movements in broad terms.
        There are always exceptions.

    It has taken me a while to work out what’s going on here. I mean I get that Sal wants to burn off some steam (and has chosen a fairly dangerous way to do it) but why drag poor Danny along? If he gets hurt, it’ll be her fault (probably a lot more directly than whatever happened to Marcie). I just wonder why she so desperately needs Danny on her pillion!

    As someone who does not ride a motorcycle and has never seen the appeal in one, can someone explain to me why Sal needs Danny along for this? I can sorta see why driving alone might be a good way to lose oneself in the activity and just have some time alone with your thoughts, but why bring someone else along if you’re not going to talk and you don’t want them to talk to you?

    Good news, bad news

    Good news – Sal and Danny aren’t gonna die or (probably) get seriously hurt/disabled (or, in Sal’s case, more disabled than her hand already is). The adjustment and grief over it would take FOREVER in this comics pace. Also, apparently Indiana only requires those under the age of 18 to wear a helmet so she’s probably not getting fined over that.

    Bad news – Speeding tickets and all sorts of other things are on the table. As the old adage says, ‘you’d be surprised what you can live through’.

        Tried a couple of times. Didn’t work for me. No idea why. If it’s a sign of something being wrong with me, I hate to tell you, but it’s very, very far down on the list of things wrong with me.
