      I won’t say this is ‘healthy’, but it’s understandable. Sal doesn’t want to write off her parents unless she’s completely sure she’s done everything in her power to try and mend those bridges.

      Bringing home a boyfriend they would approve of is likely the last chance, though I wonder where she’ll go with the result. Come on, Sal, learn the right lesson.

        Yeah, the relationship between her and her parents isn’t as terrible as some, and while she’s come to terms with her parents being racists without even really realizing it–like, *yes* it’s obvious to us and to most of the cast, but Linda and Charles justify it to themselves in other ways–birth family can be a hard bond to break. That last panel looks freaking desperate to have a degree of acceptance that she doesn’t know if she ever could have had.

        It’s also good in that she knows Danny will speak up for her just out of innocence. He knows most or all of Sal’s past and accepts her. Hopefully, she’ll also realize his feelings are a validation, not a condemnation.

    Sal, just because what makes you happy happens to slightly overlap with what would make your parents happy doesn’t mean you deserve to be happy Amy less or that Danny somehow shouldn’t make you happy/is suddenly bad.

    Not scolding, I just feel like she needs to hear this gently from someone at some point because I worry she’ll panic and dump Danny at the end of this storyline. It’s very hard to separate those things sometimes when your relationship with your parents is so bad.

        I’m guessing after watching Danny go along and try his best with her crazy plan to please her parents, she’ll actually trust him more, even after the parent interaction inevitably implodes.

        Basically I expect by the end of this Sal will see that much more clearly that her parents are awful, and Danny is a decent guy.

      I hope so too! A lot of Sal’s recent character growth has come from her learning to let herself like what she likes, and not be too embarrassed about the things that make her happy, and more importantly, the people who make her happy. Her parents liking her boyfriend is a challenge to that character growth, and I really hope she and Danny make it through that challenge. I like them.

    It’s all a matter of perspective. Look at it like this, Sals parents probably never thought she could get someone like Danny without being the type of person they were conditioning her to be.

    But hey look she got him anyway and it was by being true to who she really is, and she can rub that right in her mom’s face.

        Among other things, they decided two cases that weren’t real. The lady who claimed her first amendment rights were being infringed because of the public accommodations law in the CRA doesn’t actually make wedding websites and a gay couple didn’t actually try to hire her. She lied.
        And in the student loan case, the Missouri state government shouldn’t have standing because the agency overseeing student debts is independent, and that agency didn’t want to bring the suit. Missouri has had a series of attorneys general who don’t really care about the rule of law though.

I’m just saying that in a country where it’s so easy to get a gun, and a Supreme Court that is terrible, with the rule that they can only be changed if they willingly step down or kick the bucket. I’m just surprised there haven’t been more instances of people trying to force a change of supreme court justices. Not that anyone should. I’m just surprised it hasn’t happened in recent history yet. Feel like they’re kinda asking for it.

          The fetishization of girls in school (and other) uniforms, in my experience, seems to be most prevalent in situation where there are separate gendered standards. With situations like the Catholic School uniform and the English Public School uniform the trend the last couple decades away from forcing girls to wear skirts and thereby largely unifying the uniform across genders has helped with the reduction in fetishization.

          The Japanese situation is a bit more of a problem as while they largely moved away from the old, heavily fetishized, sailor fuku toward a skirt and blazer style they kept the gendered distinction. In part that was due to the continuation of skirt requirements in women’s business dress codes at the time that change was started (the archetypal ‘Office Lady’ look). While those business dress codes have been changing since then and now allow women to wear pants as part of their suits, it’ll unfortunately probably be another generation or two before Japanese schools start to largely follow suit and gods only knows how long after that before it stops being seen as going against societal norms…

    On the other hand, even if he performs well academically, I could see them thinking that he is simply not ambitious enough, and be unenthusiastic about him due to that.

    I enjoy Sal’s final expression, but then I always enjoy when the twins echo each other’s expressions and such. IIRC the last time we saw that particular expression, Walky was entranced by Dorothy.
