uh, SHE isn’t the new favorite by proximity to white bread, Danny is. Refer back to the conversation about kid ranking she, walky, and jennifer had with lucy a couple days ago.
Pylgrim
The point is that thanks to the difference in skin colour of their partners, Sal will raise above Walky among their actual children.
JasonAW3
Who cares about skin color?
It’s kind of obvious that Sal is developing some rather deep feelings for Ethan, and unless I missed it, they haven’t gone beyond kissing yet.
JRivest
Did you mean Danny, or were you making a joke?
Regret
The parents seem to care about skin color. (Also, what JRivest said)
I won’t say this is ‘healthy’, but it’s understandable. Sal doesn’t want to write off her parents unless she’s completely sure she’s done everything in her power to try and mend those bridges.
Bringing home a boyfriend they would approve of is likely the last chance, though I wonder where she’ll go with the result. Come on, Sal, learn the right lesson.
Yeah, the relationship between her and her parents isn’t as terrible as some, and while she’s come to terms with her parents being racists without even really realizing it–like, *yes* it’s obvious to us and to most of the cast, but Linda and Charles justify it to themselves in other ways–birth family can be a hard bond to break. That last panel looks freaking desperate to have a degree of acceptance that she doesn’t know if she ever could have had.
It’s also good in that she knows Danny will speak up for her just out of innocence. He knows most or all of Sal’s past and accepts her. Hopefully, she’ll also realize his feelings are a validation, not a condemnation.
i mean, at least this isn’t too risque a comic to where sal would just have sex on a public table with danny in front of her parents to horrify them lol
She knows it’s bad going in so hopefully that can protect her relationship with Danny, but doing trying to get some love from her mom is just really really sad.
If nobody else shows up, at least it’s still a lunch date for the two of them.
Random832
Sal was there when Walky got the text that it was canceled. She might be betting on them not having actually bothered to find a different place to eat, or she might have some other plan to arrange a meeting with them.
If they break up no matter what I’m pretending they get back together after college and some personal growth LET ME LIVE IN MY PROTECTED BAD GIRL BI DORK BOY DREAM.
Sal, just because what makes you happy happens to slightly overlap with what would make your parents happy doesn’t mean you deserve to be happy Amy less or that Danny somehow shouldn’t make you happy/is suddenly bad.
Not scolding, I just feel like she needs to hear this gently from someone at some point because I worry she’ll panic and dump Danny at the end of this storyline. It’s very hard to separate those things sometimes when your relationship with your parents is so bad.
Autocorrect changing “any” to “Amy” is hilarious. “You don’t deserve to be happy Amy less!” shouts Amy drunkenly at someone across the street who she thought was her ex-boyfriend.
well she already had her guard up around him pretty high before hand so hopefully they don’t break up just because of that/be nice if it’d last a bit longer even if it’s nothing too long term, tho i can’t think of anyone in the immediate cast that sal would be dating
I’m guessing after watching Danny go along and try his best with her crazy plan to please her parents, she’ll actually trust him more, even after the parent interaction inevitably implodes.
Basically I expect by the end of this Sal will see that much more clearly that her parents are awful, and Danny is a decent guy.
I’ve been figuring for the last several days that the next strip would be Sal grabbing Danny and dragging him to bed for frustration-sex. Keep being surprised, but it makes sense, yeah.
I hope so too! A lot of Sal’s recent character growth has come from her learning to let herself like what she likes, and not be too embarrassed about the things that make her happy, and more importantly, the people who make her happy. Her parents liking her boyfriend is a challenge to that character growth, and I really hope she and Danny make it through that challenge. I like them.
It’s all a matter of perspective. Look at it like this, Sals parents probably never thought she could get someone like Danny without being the type of person they were conditioning her to be.
But hey look she got him anyway and it was by being true to who she really is, and she can rub that right in her mom’s face.
That’s the spirit! If you have horrible parents who don’t believe in you, take your success and shove it in their face. Then walk out while putting on sunglasses, as an 80’s hit starts in the background.

new favourite child by proximity to whitebread = YIKES
Tan
Yikes, but I’m HERE for it.
Kyrik Michalowski
I think new favorite kid might be a stretch, but they might treat her like a decent person this time around.
Clif
Yes, this will definitely end well.

Jennifer said it out loud and we hated her for it, but boy is it accurate.
Rororoyourboat
I’m curious if Danny will end up pushing Jennifer out of the top spot and how that will go over with her if it does.
Ana Chronistic
willing to wager Linda prefers boys
NGPZ
Oh no Sal ?

StClair
Joe and Joyce are the only ones of the main cast I can really say are making “healthy” choices right now.
NGPZ
What about Dina and Becky?
StClair
Fair, although there are some things that Becky is still choosing to not address. (Then again, so am I. *shrug*)

Ouch. Did not expect to have my inner dialogue these days laid out so immediately
Kyrik Michalowski
Oh Sal… you know this isn’t going to end well, so why are you doing it?
Am I crazy and this will be a good thing, or is this as bad an idea as it sounds?
BBCC
Oh hell no, Sal would HATE the daughter they wanted.
But well…..the part of her that wants her parents to love her dies hard. One last desperate shot for it can’t hurt, can it?
Kyrik Michalowski
I know it was a rhetorical question, but it can and will hurt a lot, and I’m not looking forward to it.

DarkoNeko
it’s ok Sal, your mom’s so racist the lunch was cancelled anyway
APW
Is it a yo mama joke?
DarkoNeko
no but it should be
TulipKitten
Yo momma so racist that her last Halloween costume was a hood?
TulipKitten
TIL I suck at yo momma jokes
Ana Chronistic
nah, the problem is “yo mama so racist” jokes end with something that’s actually plausible and therefore not actually a “joke” =/
Bogeywoman
Oh man, if they turn up to lunch because no one bothered to tell Sal it was cancelled…

I’m confused

Guess who’s coming to dinner!
brionl
Hungry Larry?
Needfuldoer
Klingons?
JasonAW3
Sal would make for a hot Klingon!
Needfuldoer
Big Torres energy from her.
MM
Danny’s more of a Harry than a Tom, though.
JasonAW3
Hi Confused, I’m Jason!

This is painfully cute. I love them together but I’m worried about their deeply ingrained insecurities. They both have been known to self-sabotage ☹️

Adds ‘Amy Less’ to cast list.

I hope this doesn’t result in Sal overthinking her relationship and dumping Danny to conform with her parent’s ideals less.
Vanessa
Fingers crossed. She’s happy with Danny and he’s good to her. Likely to continue to be good to her as long as she’s willing.
Angel
i’d think danny would hopefully be like “i like sal the way she is/know about her past and accept her” or so
Mark
Or…just talk about what he likes about her, and let them bring up Sal’s Past, like to him it’s a matter of historical interest only.

What, of what, 80s hit could you have in mind? Let me think.
not someone else
I’m sure I know which one you’re thinking of, but I want it to be Rock You Like A Hurricane.

It’s not 80s, but I love “You Don’t Own Me” for Sal. (And for me. Because it’s great.)

“Cool guys don’t look at explosions” by The Lonely Island.

Only Fight The Power qualifies as a 80’s hit, before the release of Fear of a Black Planet, but it’d still do it.
