        Yes as I’ve said before her mechanophilia is a paraphilia not an orientation. The sparkage wasn’t there with Leslie in most likelihood because she didn’t satisfy her fetish more-so than because Malaya isn’t into ladies, even if Willis hadn’t initially planned it that way, in the light of her later relationship.

          I don’t even read it as that. I think the closest Shortpacked! ever came to saying she had a kink or fetish for robots was ‘I wanna fuck whatever that means’ after Ultra-Car described herself as an ‘asexual homoromantic trans-chassis woman’.

          She really comes out not as ‘robosexual’, but as demi…there was no spark with Les not because she was a woman, or a human, but because they had little in common and hadn’t spent a lot of time getting close in a non-romantic/sexual sense, whereas with UC, they had a lot in common and got close even before UC got her upgrade.

          She wanted to fuck whatever that meant, not because it described a robot, but because it described Ultra-Car.

          Whenever this ends up clarified by DoA (I can’t see how it can not, unless Willis wants to stretch this relationship out), we’ll see how right I am about that, but it fits what we’ve seen and not seen.

    It does appear though that we are getting character development here on both these two. And that is a good thing.

    Malaya takes her studies serious enough to study a Saturday night, her athletics seriously enough to be in the roller derby team, starts to hang out with the cool new chick on the team within a week and doesn’t hesitate to stand up against a bully.

    …Malaya is actually one of the most well adjusted people in the comic so far. To me her biggest flaw seem to be that she has picked some bad company (and that she’s a rude brat)

      Studying on Saturday night while hanging out with a friend doesn’t always indicate being serious about school. Just as possible that she slacked all week long (distracted by sports?) and desperately needs the weekend time to cram for Monday tests. I had a housemate who staggered through 4 years of school that way. Never cracked a book on a week night.

        Pansexual is analogous to bisexual (like they’re literally the same thing, just a matter of personal preference which label a person goes with), which would involve being into girls. Demisexual is something else, which much better describes Malaya’s sexuality.

          That would surprise most of the people I know who identify as pan.

          The common definition of pan is ‘I am explicitly stating that the gender binary doesn’t apply to my attraction’ – ie, in the minds of some people ‘bisexual’ suggests that only men and women count, agender, genderfluid, and in some minds genderqueer and trans men and women are out, and these people want to make clear that that’s not the case for them.

          (Of course, that concept annoys most of the people I know who identify as bi, who don’t actually have that limit.)

          nah pansexuality is commonly defined as attraction to multiple genders, where the experience of attraction is independent of specific gender. bisexuality is attraction both to same and different genders, not necessarily excluding nonbinary ppl at all. either way there’s absolutely no reason why bi ppl, or straight or gay ppl, wouldn’t be attracted to trans ppl. other than transphobia, of course

    Being curious, I just loaded the strip into Photoshop and matched Malaya-faces. Except for details of shadowing, they are almost pixel-for-pixel identical, with differences probably being accounted for by being drawn on a finer raster than the final Web posting.

    It looks like Mr. Willis has been extremely careful to give Malaya no visible response whatever to Marcie’s nuzzle.

    Y’know, everyone on these comments is posting things like “This’ll end bad if Malaya ends up liking dudes.”
    But I want to remind everyone that a human’s sense of touch is EXTREMELY sensitive. Even if it IS on the shoulder. Idk about the rest of you, but if a friend did that to me, I would consider it either an ENORMOUSLY strong and years-forged bond thing or a sign of affection.
    Of course…this is a webcomic…with a crime-fighting college student in it…but I digress.

      She tried to date Leslie because she thought she might be a lesbian, which for her was one potential explanation for her total lack of real interest in dudes. She learned she’s some flavor of gray ace. Demisexual is probably a good word for it.

        Well, maybe not. We’ve only ever seen her try to have sex with one guy that ended in failure, and she also tried making out with Ken once while trying to make Ultra Car jealous.

        She might be attracted to men and women. Like, if Ultra Car identified as male, had a male chassis, would Malaya not be attracted? I think she’s demi and needs a deep emotional connection before she can be with someone.

        All we really know about Malaya is that:

        – She is an unpleasant asshole.

        – She also gets along pretty well with Marcie and is learning sign language.

        So unlike every other character who has a ton of positive aspects to counterbalance the worse behaviour, Malaya’s just casually acting like a turd to Lucy, a character plenty of Shortpacked readers really like.

        Besides, I get the joke, but I don’t see how Lucy introduction yesterday is being annoyingly friendly to somebody, unless they’re a bitter asshole like Malaya.

Of course, in SP Malaya only hit it off with an AI that had a robotic, sexless body; it’s still to be seen what that translates to in a realistic universe.

    A lot of LGB movies cheat. They give characters ACTUAL gaydar, so that everyone just kind of knows from a single smile. There’s very little “incredibly awkward how do I hint this strongly enough so they’ll see it if they’re interested but remain oblivious if they’re straight ughhhh I’m so afraid to say it out loud”, which is the reality in most RL situations.

        Time wasn’t supposed to work that way in the Terminator’s universe, there was only one timeline and all time travel resulted in a stable time loop.
