    I’ll bet a lot people can feel Dina right now. That second-guessing that comes out of not knowing if you’re reading someone right, and when you don’t know you jump to all the worst conclusions, immediately, no matter how little sense they make.

          There’s a lot of that in Who (and in Star Trek also). Karen “Amy Pond” Gillan first appeared in that same episode as the red-cloaked soothsayer; and of course if you go further back, you get stuff like Romana regenerating into the princess from a couple of episodes prior (Lalla Ward).

          Back in 2012, 63% of respondents said they were male, 29% said they were female, and 8% said neither. Though not everyone who sees the comics clicks on the polls. (I didn’t realize they were there for quite some time. And there may have been shifts in the past three years. So take those results with a grain of salt I guess)

    Yeah, reading signals is hard. I totally relate to Dina’s thought process here. I basically don’t know what I’m supposed to do in any situation, ever. Props to Dina for taking charge of the situation. I’ve always been more inclined to wait for the other person to do something, and that’s a problem. My failure to be proactive with others has cost me more than one romantic relationship.

    It’s cool, though. I’m fine with remaining indefinitely single, and I’m not being sarcastic. I’m pretty sure I’m heteroromantic demisexual (why are neither of those recognized as words? GET WITH THE TIMES SPELLCHECK!) so I’m fine with not getting any. Being single is NOT a problem to be corrected. Better to be single than in a relationship just for the sake of being in one. Having a few meaningful friendships and doing work that matters to me? Those things are important to me? Romantic/ sexual relationships? Meh, whatevs. We’re all different in what we want and need out of life, and I’ve come to realize that certain things aren’t important to *me.*

    How did I veer so far from the topic at hand? Sometimes, these comics bring up all kinds of things for me, and I can’t quite say how I ended up going from point A to point B (or maybe point Z? Point 42? The place where I end up mentally doesn’t really logically follow point A).

    In any case, Dina does seem to care for Becky and feel a connection. For all my ranting about relationships, I don’t deny that a relationship can be a wonderful thing when one meets someone, and it feels right. Of course, when one considers the creator of this comic, and hints dropped about future storylines, there is likely plenty of drama and angst ahead. Even so, as I said yesterday, it’s nice to see the way these two characters are connecting right now.

      Becky has shown the ability to push back when people are doing things she doesn’t like, so I think if Dina does start to take things too far, she will say something.

      (Plus at least here she seems relieved that Dina’s taking some initiative.)

      I have similar concerns, mostly because Becky has a history of being the abused in an abusive familial relationship. I’m not saying that Dina would do anything abusive deliberately, just the opposite in fact: Because both girls are inexperienced, I think that Dina will get the wrong feedback from the fact Becky is automatically submissive to an aggressive and/or domineering approach. This will lead Dina to misunderstand what is appropriate behaviour until someone (likely Sarah but possibly Joyce) calls her out on it.

      I wouldn’t normally expect to see something like that but DMW does go down dark paths sometimes and he often is quite realistic in how he portrays first-time relationships and the hidden pitfalls therein.

          It’s clearly just meant to be a joke, but it’s hypothetically possible to be a sign of worse behaviour.

          Besides, it’s a Willis comic. The last time Dina was in a relationship she painted the walls with herself.

          After forcing someone to date her through drugging them with alcohol… She got desperate and attempted to get what she wanted with zero cares to who she hurt in the process.

          That being said, there’s enough of a differende between walkyverse Dina and DOA Dina, this isn’t something I’m worried about happening in this relationship. I seriously have trouble associating the two versions as the same person.

But if so then (a) Dina’s handled the establishment of the mistress/servant relationship in about the worst way possible, and (b) even if she’d handled it perfectly, I would worry terribly about this merely reflecting Becky’s previous experience of ‘affection,’ which I think most of us would consider somewhat less than healthy.

      Hm, this reminds me of Harry Potter. Even when I learned that in British English “snog” means “kiss” or maybe “make out”, every time I read it, I still had to stop and think before I could get the image of characters having sex out of my head.

      In HP several times characters where “snogging” in the hall… that is hard to move past if you misinterpret it, let me tell you.

    It’s easy to misunderstand and underestimate Dina. Because of her social awkwardness, she rarely draws attention to herself. However, on occasion, there is a strip that reminds us that she is assertive and aggressive when she wants to be. Fortunately, it looks like Becky likes the thought of being in a relationship with a strong, take-charge woman.

    In some ways, Dina’s inner monologue is the most interesting part of this strip. It’s a wonderful capturing of the rapid out-of-control spiral of thoughts anyone in a fresh relationship tends to have when they’re desperately trying to guess what the other party is thinking or wants. I’m pretty sure that Becky was having the same internal anxiety babble!

    Speaking as someone with an autistic diagnosis I’m finding Dina’s behaviour very familiar. Issues with people’s faces, feeling overwhelmed at crowded social gatherings, unsure of the rules of social interaction, and now difficulty picking up on people’s facial expressions. Her willingness to take social risks with Becky isn’t something I can manage, but people are people, even with autism; wonderful, varied, horrible, surprising people. I’m pretty sure Dina has no specific diagnosis, but if she isn’t high functioning autistic then I will eat my hat.

        Still, undiagnosed? That could, either be good or bad, I’m not sure. I was diagnosed quite young, but I live in the UK, so there was support there (in theory, in practise my mother has to browbeat my school in providing appropriate support for me). I’m unaware how the situation is in the US, but there’s downsides to a positive diagnosis. In my case it was my school’s headmaster and a number of staff actively trying to get me expelled or making my time at the school unpleasant so I’d leave.

          University was nice though. They gave me, and my older brother when he got his diagnosis, free laptops and a bunch of stuff to help with studies. I take it there’s nothing similar in the US?

          There are, but it’s complicated. The university is required to make education accessible for people with disabilities, but the actual resources available at disabled students services differ GREATLY between universities.

          For me, the space they provided for students who were on the spectrum was actually more stressful than the space for ordinary students, with less help and I could never manage to talk them out of putting me there. Though that was mostly an issue of funding than ability than active staff discrimination unless I misread the situation ENTIRELY.

          Well it’s easy to misread. I didn’t know any of it was going on at the time. I’ve just had cause to go over all the old paperwork from back then and just how badly they handled everything kind of crystallised from what I read and what I remember. They were required to provide an LSA to disabled students; rather than anyone trained they got someone’s mother to do it, and she was dreadful. She kept insisting I maintained eye contact with people I was speaking to, and for anyone not familiar with typical symptoms of autism, that’s really stressful. Looking at faces freaked me out, and I was too young to deal with it properly.

        We know Becky will be sticking around, so I’d guess the biggest problem would be paying for food and clothing after she enrolls.

      I don’t know IU’s policies, but it woudn’t work here (I teach at a university in a neighboring state). If she had already been a student, you can usually late add up to 2 weeks into the semester, but enrollment is a whole different thing. She would need to get on top of stuff to be eligible to apply for a spring transfer.

    You know what would be a good twist? If her dad was upset because Becky became a Decepticon. (Specifically, a lesbian Decepticon.) That way you could reveal that all the main characters like Becky, Dina, Joyce, Ethan, etc… are really robots pretending to be dumb fleshlings so that they can overthrow your governments and your world can be enslaved a part of the Decepticon Empire.
