This is hugely unfair. It’s a fairly natural instinct to look at what looks most like a face, and Dina’s face seems to be mostly obscured. I think it’s silly to assume Joyce doesn’t know where Dina’s face is, where she’s looking is hardly a direct link to where she thinks Dina’s face is.
Also we know Joyce gets good grades. (the implication being here that the only reason some of her grades had dipped was because she couldn’t see in the larger classes) Joyce is plenty bright.
If it looks like an iguana, consult your doctor immediately. Unless you’re American, in which case you can probably find a cheap-ish alternative on like, Etsy or something.
Their vocalization would work the same as birds do so chirping and the like is also possible. If you want a taste for hor how T.rex might’ve sounded look up how cassowaries sound. It’s a trip.
Hey I’ve actually been looking for scientifically accurate T-rex sounds for a DOA fan game I’m making, so thanks a bunch! ?
Ladymissfit
Cassowaries live in jungles mind so they have evolutionary pressure to make deep sounds (low notes travel through vegetarion better) while T.rex did not.
Oh! Thank you! What environments did the T Rex live in?
Ladymissfit
North america in the late ctetacious i believe was mostly partial woodland? Im honestly not sure but it was too big for jungles and so were its prey.
eh, whatever
Subtropical forest.
The Oracle
The T-Rex mostly lived inside Pokéballs between battles, sometimes inside of a computer in a hospital.
Thag Simmons
Prehistoric Planet has a pretty solid portrayal. Lot of low growling and closed-mouth vocalizations, drawing pretty heavily on Crocodilian vocalizations.
I feel like people forget that the first Jurassic Park came out almost 30 years ago. It absolutely had inaccuracies that were known at the time, but it also was in a decent number of ways more accurate than anything else at the time. Portraying dinosaur tails as not dragging on the ground for example, was a huge statement in the early 90s. (ironically Dina’s costume is probably less accurate in this respect, but I expect that choice was made for practical reasons)
Also for all the flak they get about velociraptors, they were startlingly close, just the name was a bit off, and Utahraptor was just named as a species around the time the first movie came out.
And Dina herself may talk about the Jurassic Park dinosaurs as “movie monsters”, but they were very much portrayed as animals, with the danger to the human characters the result of fairly natural animal behavior. A lot (again, definitely not all) of the criticisms of accuracy in Jurassic Park have the benefit of hindsight.
thejeff
I dimly recall it was the abuse of chaos theory that bothered me most at the time, though I don’t really remember the details.
On the topic of roaring, Dina was operating under her best knowledge at the time. Remember this is before the timeskip, whereas this change came after the timeskip.
T.rex once adult likely didn’t have (much) plumage as we’ve found enough skin imprints without to confirm that. Babies absolutely were covered though and adults migh’ve had little remnants.
I do not have any particular papers on hand. But yeah we’ve found numerous imprints of T.rex skin. The back is still unaccounted for so partial coverage is still a possibility but the general consensus is fairly bare.
Ladymissfit
However, T.rex in particular appears to be a bit of an outlier as more basal tyrannosaurs did have feathers and they were very common in ceolosaurs in general so there’s nothing conclusive yet.
Thanks!!! You’re a paleontologist? That’s AWESOME ?
If you’re interested, a game I’m making seeks to do justice to scientifically accurate dinosaurs, and I’m always looking for help too. (although review for scientific accuracy won’t become relevant until I have a first draft done).
I suppose she did make several remarks about Billie’s weight, early on. In fairness, Billie does have a pleasant amount of weight on her, in some very nice places, so I like to think that Ruth’s eyes were wandering even that far back and she couldn’t verbalise it in a non-terrible way. Or maybe I’m projecting and extrapolating too much from your choice of words.
Devin
I think the “weightier matters” more hand to do with metaphorical or emotional weight.
Although also, it’s not hard for any human to outweigh an iguana. I would wager most do it within a few months of birth.

of COURSE that’s her costume
ThunderNight
what else would it be?
Reltzik
Something with feathers?
Darkoneko
it lacks feathers
Devin
As far as we understand it now, an adult may or may not have had feathers, and likely wasn’t covered in them.
Lucretiel
More importantly it’s that terrible upright Barney body plan
Doctor_Who
I’m surprised Joyce was so quick to recognize Dina without her hat.
Dean
She’s wearing a full-body hat.
StClair
Interesting (at least to me) that Joyce’s eyeline is with the Rex eyes, not the throat.
Proxiehunter
Of course. If she were looking at the throat she would be making eye contact with real eyes and that’s existentially horrifying.
The Oracle
Do you not have eyes in your throat?
Casi
Sadly no, I am not a Ninja Turtle

Joyce is…. not the brightest of the bunch

The hat is the T-rex’s tongue.
Amelie Wikström
Probably her voice. (Or it’s just the easiest guess when you see a dinosaur standing next to Becky.)

Gotta hide the iguana!
Ruth is not having a good day and it’s not a good time to need her mercy right now.
jeffepp
I was trying to figure out why Joyce would hide, then remembered the lizard. Odds are, Ruth already knows. And, just dosen’t care.
Ana Chronistic
It also JUST occurred to me the alt-text is a reference to Oz ??♀️
Devin
We’re off to see the lizaaaard!
The Oracle
Isn’t that the plot of the Rugrats movie?
The Wellerman
I can’t believe I didn’t catch that!!!! ?
I am both thrilled and mildly disappointed in myself.
Azhrei Vep
The Rugrats had a movie?
segnosaur
Sadly “Hide the Iguana” sounds dirtier than it is.
(Sounds like a pickup line at a bar… “Wanna come back to my place and play Hide the Iguana”)
Opus the Poet
I laughed harder at this than I should have.

I don’t think Ruth is even focused on these dorks right now. She’s got a heart to break.
The Wellerman
Waaa-ha-ha-hoooo!!!!!! ???
Dina’s costume, the energy is PERFECT!!!! ✌️? ?

So is Joyce just gonna dodge Ruth at the party she invited Ruth to?
Clif
Yes.
The Wellerman
BTW in case you’re wondering, her costume is almost certaintly a Jurassic Park dinosaur, not a scientifically accurate one.
Besides what few details I can make out in the blue palette, dinosaurs most likely did not roar. Rather, they growled and hissed.
Ladymissfit

Sorry but it’s just really funny to me to hear any dinosaur facts from Dr Thag Simmons

well, they are (or were) the recognized expert…
Ed Callahan
Well, Thag got the point about them.

She can be scientifically accurate the other 364 days a year. Halloween is fun movie monster dinosaur day.

I think Dina’s aware that she can’t be too much of a stickler for accuracy in terms of costumes.
Keulen
It’s missing feathers, for one thing. Along with a bunch of other inaccuracies Dina would likely mention if someone asked.
asp55
She’s already written a comprehensive list: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2013/comic/book-3/01-if-the-shoes-split/piano/

I’m so happy for Dina that she gets to wear this as her part of a matching couples costume. Love this for her.

I wish I could play Lewis Grizzard’s “Reptile Farm” comedy routine here.

The inaccuracy is what makes it scary

From skin impressions T. rex would have been sparsely feathered if at all.

Becky’s dressed as Ellie Sattler and Dina’s Jurassic Park dino. They’re doing a couples costume.
