        Robin is one of the main characters in Shortpacked! (and previously appeared in It’s Walky!), but as those strips take place in an alternate universe to DOA… Umm… All you need to know is that Robin is Roz’s older sister. And apparently still in Congress.

        For DOA nothing else is known yet.

          Robin is not one for, let’s say formal, entrances. And without the sombrero more than a day into office, it looks grim. In addition, that’s Dude Robin in the hallway, who is the most annoying thing in the universe last time she made a statement on the matter, so she seems to have acquired the sudden and rather unexpected ability to tolerate with, and even possibly like him.

          That said, Roz appears unchanged, so it is possible that the family DeSanto escaped the powers of Universal Reconfiguration.

          So adjusted to 3 to 2 against.

      If Robin were completely different then she wouldn’t be Robin. I’d guess this is a Robin DeSantos who was never experimented on by aliens and doesn’t have super powers. That alone is going to make a big difference in her personality.

        That’s not really how I’m approaching this universe, though. Dumbing of Age isn’t really a “what if” universe, where you can step back bit by bit to where this universe “branched off” from the original universe and went differently. This new universe is not beholden to the old in that way. It’s a fundamentally different universe. If I want Robin to still be zany and goofy like the original Robin was, I would be free to do so.

        I would recommend not trying to decide what characters are like based on what’s missing from this universe versus the original universe. That’s always going to be a red herring. It’s part of why I’m kind of against talking about the old universe in these comments. They’re just a distraction.

          I know this isn’t the first time you’ve said this, and I’m fine with that. However, I’m curious about something….

          If the DOA universe is intended to be completely different and separate from the past/concurrent universe that had Roomates thru Shortpacked, then is there any particular reason why you peopled them with what amounts to identical characters with identical names? Wouldn’t’ve creating completely new characters, or at the very least using fresh new names for them, have done more to separate these strips in our minds?

          Again, not that I’m complaining. As I said, just curious about the approach, and I don’t recall having seen you explain this.

          It would have been better to help separate the strips in people’s minds, no question. But part of the reason I set up Dumbing of Age is that these are characters who I love, and in many cases have missed writing and drawing, and they’re characters I can imagine drawing and writing the rest of my life.

          Because of Dumbing of Age, people come up to me at conventions and ask me to draw them Billie again. That makes me happy.

    Hmm…lack of sugar-based super powers would mean that Cadbury cereal has no effect (other than being delicious/disgusting, depending on your opinion), which would mean that Robin got to her position by competence. We can therefore assume she’s at least as competent/mature as any other politician, which is to say not very.

Amber becoming an assistant general manager was good story/character development, but that kind of stuff was so few and far between. I’m so glad I have DoA to get my walkyfix.

    A big theme in the presentation of the other Robin DeSanto is thwarted potential. Even without her super-powers, she seems to be a latent genius. She could become president if only she cared to apply herself on a regular basis.

    It’s too early to tell for sure, but it looks like in the Dumbiverse, she does, and she might.

      Well, it was a religious argument and not a gender assumptions argument, so that might have been tough. Joyce had even been equal-opportunity in accusing Joe and Roz of being pedal-rippers, despite their gender! (Though that was just because she’s equally offended by them having had sex.)

      Though, she *did* (indirectly) claim that Joe still have pedals to save, and that Roz was down to the roots. Though that probably was less that she thinks women are sluttier than that she was trying to flimisily justify her attack on Joe while simultaneously insulting Roz.

    Another fact that points at Robin being different in the Dumbiverse:

    In Shortpacked, Robin was elected in the byelection following the death of Nancy Pelosi, making her the representative of California’s 8th congressional district (aka most of San Francisco). San Francisco is an insanely liberal city and proud of it.

    In Dumbing of Age, Robin has been introduced as “your congresswoman,” which likely means she is the representative for the congressional district containing Indiana University, Indiana’s 9th. Indiana’s 9th is a fairly neutral district politically, flopping between Democrat and Republican almost every election and never giving much of a margin of victory to the winner.

    One would think that the hyper Robin that won in San Francisco would be seen as a bit too radical for the 9th, so it is likely that Robin in the Dumbiverse is quite a bit more subdued.

    YES! Thank you David. I’ve been praying that you would show Robin in this series, and now that she is actually here I am quite touched. 🙂 Let’s see how this actually goes. In It’s Walky the main reason why Robin is so hyper is because she can obtain tons of energy, and speed from eating chocolate due to the power she was given by the aliens. *Awesome Power* Because the It’s Walky Universe and the Shortpacked Universe are the same that power stays with her.
    In this Universe the aliens don’t attack. There are no super-humans. Thus Robin doesn’t have her power. Besides…it is proven that when Robin eats a particular cereal with chocolate Easter eggs she becomes the exact opposite of herself. I wonder if that would happen if she ate that cereal in this universe. 🙂 I think I got that all right.

      Leslie doesn’t seem to care. Everyone involved is in her class, and based on the last comic, I think she wants to see how much she can get about this, and bringing in Robin is the next logical step.

I can’t think of any kind of input Robin could give that would be of any value in a class like this, assuming that she’s going to be the same Robin character from ‘It’s Walky’. Unless her appearance doesn’t have anything to do with the actual class but has something to do with the whole sex scandal, but having her appear in a Gender Studies class to touch up on that seems kinda weird too. C’mon Monday.

      Probably not, but they all live in the same district now. College students can often maintain registration at their former address of residence, but by default they vote in the district where they’re currently living.

        I never lived on campus, and I went to college back in the Paleolithic, but as I recall voter registration had to be at the home of record (usually the parent’s home) and college students voted absentee.
