          I don’t know if I could introduce that to anyone under a certain age given how the series ended. It’s great and it ended in a rather realistic way but still I felt my heart sink the first time I saw it and realized what it all meant.

    Every time I see Dina I remember how much I want that hat, and how I once found an almost identical purple one at target but they wouldn’t let me buy it because it didn’t have a pricetag and was probably just left there by a toddler which would explain why it was the size of a standard yamaka and made me look ridiculous.

      Hm. Dina and Marigold are both socially awkward at a level where they’ve been avoiding other people and are only now learning to have friends. Something a little weird about that making them the most popular, because it obviously doesn’t work for people like that in their own universes.

        It’s not that weird if you take into consideration the amount of people who like both characters because the characters may or may not embody a part of themselves, if not themselves entirely. Dina and Marigold give those people someone to relate to and root for in the comic, and maybe even an inspiration or starting point to boost confidence in themselves, to try being social as well.

        Then there’s the idea that the internet is made up of a good population of socially introverted people, and that a character in a webcomic that they feel represented by is an inevitable occurrence. 🙂

      Frequency of strips doesn’t necessarily make him not unpopular but I think it’s an exageration for the sake of the joke.

      Danny is plenty unpopular and plenty unlikeable.

      He is an unlikeable person that thinks they are perfectly normal and likeable which is one of his biggest problems.

      He pretty much never reflects on anything ever, which means you could create a step by step plan on what will happen when he talks to someone and likely be right, because he never changes.

      He thinks too much about what other people will think of him if he takes a particular action but fails to consider what will happen if he takes a different action.

      He lashes out at people (he threatened to murder Joe and Dorothy, his lashing out includes pretty serious threats and he even hurt Joe with an insult, he needs to get that under control).

      He considers actions in terms of how they will affect him, not others, in many cases.

      If he actually reflected on why things seem to go wrong, and actually learned and changed as a result, then he’d be a character many more of us would be able to sympathise with. He would be a flawed character, yes, but he wouldn’t be just be “that one idiot that always screws things up in the exact same kind of manner” any more.

        I have no idea what you’re talking about for most of this post; maybe my memory is just bad, though. However, for the actually specific examples you provided rather than vague wrongdoings I have no recollection of, he certainly did not threaten Joe and Dorothy. A genuine threat implies an actual chance of violence or other wrongdoing (see: Blaine in general, and in return Amber threatening him to leave), not just expressing frustration. Also, as I recall he hurt Joe with the truth after Joe ruined something for him. By definition you are the worst wingman ever if instead of helping somebody with something like that, you scare off the person instead.

He was talking about banging Dorothy before she broke up with Danny, and even after that’s still a ridiculously inconsiderate thing to say to your supposed best friend. And he apparently hired a prostitute for Danny…

        “I will murder you” is a creepy thing to say to a stranger. Why? Because you don’t have a relationship with established groundrules for what you feel is comfortable to say to each other. But Danny and Joe are friends. They are male teenager friends. They’ve known each other all their lives, and male teenager friends will say horrible shit to each other constantly with the implicit shared understanding that they don’t mean any of it, that it is merely a quick gauge for how upset they are within a certain range. Taking Danny’s stupid homicide remark literally is absurd. Amazingly, horribly absurd.

          I’m honestly a bit surprised that Danny get that much flak from the fandom. Sure, he’s kinda naive und sometimes a bit stupid, but he means well and is all in all a nice guy.

        So… he’s a kid that doesn’t have a grasp on the world around him yet. Sounds like a college freshman to me.

        I’d argue that we have yet to get a chance to see his self-reflection period, partially because the story, until recently, had been focused on other characters, and partially because the plot has only covered the first few months of the first semester of college over the course of 4ish years. People like him need more time and experience with dealing with others and the consequences of his own actions before any self-reflection can be done, and even then, it would take something pretty hard-hitting in his own life to trigger that self-reflection. I don’t doubt that we’ll get to that in a year or two, as each character is just beginning to get their assigned character arcs, and I have a feeling that Danny’s will be one of the more satisfying ones to see play out. For me, at least. 😀

      At this point, I’m not really mad at Danny anymore. Sure, he was an idiot for not connecting the dots re: Amazi-Girl, but now that the truth is out, there’s not much left to take issue with. People who think otherwise either have a hard time letting go of the Danny-hate that gripped much of the readership not too long ago, part of which was pre-conditioned by everyone’s (including Willis) own contempt for Roomies! era Danny, or hold him to a fantastically unrealistic standard (such as Sam above) for… reasons, I guess?

    I don’t think anyone has noted that this makes Dina the best roommate ever in the history of college. My roommate in college wasn’t even able to keep a stoner out of our room, as she was prone to leaving the door unlocked. I would have traded for an adorably socially awkward roommate that makes raptor noises in a heart beat.

    The subtext points to Danny being the least popular character, but I wonder how much of Danny being unpopular ties into him in the other comics rather than what he has done and is doing in this strip.

      Danny is only unpopular because of what people THINK he’s done in other strips. It’s gone far behind the initial poor impression people had of him (because he didn’t get Dorothy’s unspoken messages) into outright lies and delusions about the vicious and callous angrifests and casual attempts to murder people that people imagine him to have perpetrated.

        Dorothy may have sent some unspoken messages but he completely ignored the one she sent in giant flashing neon letters: that her education and career were important to her. He was all, ‘meh, even if I fail I can cling to you, and maybe you’ll give up on your dreams and cling back, yay!’ THAT is where Danny lost most people. The constant state of obliviousness is irritating, even if understandable so that gains him no points. Plus it became a running joke that many find very amusing and others take far too seriously.

          And here’s an example! AT NO POINT did Danny say anything like “even if I fail I can cling to you, and maybe you’ll give up on your dreams and cling back, yay”. It was actually more like, “I’m getting a CS degree which is great; I can use it anywhere! While you’re president, I can be doing CS stuff that helps you be president! And also, this school that you’re trying to dump on (by implying that my CS degree I’m getting here is no good)? Maybe you’ll come to like it and decide it’s not a craphole stepping stone after all!”

          Note, of course, that he SPECIFICALLY REFERS TO being on board with her becoming president. Note also that he doesn’t become clingy at all until she freaking dumps him, and that she herself mentions that the bad timing of it all was her fault, not his.

          Note also that nobody gives a shit about what actually happened; it must be Danny’s fault because reasons. Imaginary, made-up reasons.

          Am I now? That’s interesting. I don’t even dislike the girl. I just note that she completely dropped the ball on dumping Danny before leading him to college, and when it comes to getting the things she wants (presidency, caramel abs, shoes) she thinks mostly about what she wants and not how her decisions will impact anyone else. Especially Danny. She is like the prototype for the fandom’s disrespect for Danny. But that aside, she’s still only like 19 (unlike a lot of the commenters here), and I expect a certain amount of immature selfishness and don’t hold it against her – I just don’t think that people should hold it against Danny.

    Dan is unable to see Amber.
    *IF* Amber mopes/falls deeper into depression/wishes someone were there to talk with her/something bad happens because Dan was unable to talk with her. (Not necessarily Amber’s fault.)

    Some people then proceed to complain about it being Dan’s fault and how he ‘Danned it up!” (‘HE SHOULDA PUNCHED DINA IN THE FACE AND FORCED HIS WAY IN’), and how Danny is a horrible person.

    (This is only slightly tongue in cheek)

    I am glad that Dina is listening to Amber’s requests and guarding her space, but I’m also glad that Danny is attempting to be there for Amber. Hopefully a middle ground can be established, such as Dina conveying a message of support.

    But is she a Velociraptor, Utahraptor, Oviraptor, Gigantoraptor or one of the more obscure dromeosaurids? Or is she a peregrine falcon or another one of the true “raptors”?

    No matter what, I still think that shouldn’t be “SNRRRRGLLLLLL!”, it should be “CHIIIIRRPPP!”. Accuracy matters.
