(also maybe that thing about him setting up the cast to get kidnapped) but mostly that five o’clock shadow thing!

          It’s easy to come up with all these rules, but every relationship is different and the only unbreakable rule is that it works for both people. Part of being friends is that the other person gets a bit of slack to go beyond what is normal. How much slack depends on the relationship.

          Ah, ignorance whining about ignorance. It’s comical that you think that all FRANCHISES should be avoided because you have a beef with corporate. Then again, you probably never would have eaten there in the first place so you are likely spouting off just to spout off. Sorry if the idea that someone might want to buy a franchise license, provide jobs in a needed area, earn money for their families, and sell something that is wanted offends you.

          On the other hand, by supporting the local franchise you’re also supporting the corporate monster. The money flows up the chain.

          It’s not really any different from any business. Boycotting any local outlet can hurt the innocent local employees.

        There’s one on VFW Parkway near the Dedham Mall and the Job Lot. Probably too far if you’re downtown or on the north shore. I’ve never been in there though, and unless their policies change then I don’t plan to.

        I wish we had more Popeyes up here; their stuff’s better than KFC (which are also few and far between). We have a few local chains, but we’ve always been behind the curve on getting the national chains. I only remember seeing the likes of Five Guys, Texas Roadhouse, and Panda Express start popping up in the last 10 years.

          Panda Express has been a mainstay in the malls for over 20 years, Five Guys is the past decade but it might be corporate expanding into the region. Texas Roadhouse has suffered due to overstaturation of the steakhouse market.

          There’s a Popeye’s on Revere Beach Parkway that ruined mashed potatoes and gravy for me…just not the same after eating peppery gravy. If it wasn’t a pain to walk to I’d go more often.

          And it’s a miracle that the mayor didn’t demand the closure of that Chick-Fil-A, they must have slipped the mayor money to turn a blind eye but that’s likely to change if he can use it to his advantage.

          It’s in Dedham, outside Marty’s jurisdiction. And you know Baker won’t say anything.

          The first Panda Express I remember ever seeing in the area is the one in an outbuilding at Walpole Mall. (Same with Five Guys, but there’s also one at Patriot Place.) I don’t remember seeing them at the malls down here, but then again the biggest one I went to was the Galleria (and only a couple times).

    You know what? I’m just gonna call Becky out on this one. It’s pretty arrogant of her to assume she’s close enough to Sarah to be a “go get lunch just the two of us” type of friend. If she’s even really considered a “friend” at all it’s more of a “I’ll tolerate you in a group setting I already hate but Joyce is there so I can’t say no.” type friend. She’s no Joyce, she’s not a even a Dina. Stay humble Becky!

      I don’t think it’s arrogant to want to get lunch with an acquaintance, but I’m fully prepared for Becky to get called out in tomorrow or next week’s strip for being obnoxiously possessive over Joyce. Like they’ve been very tolerant so far but at some point they’ve gotta draw the line.

        It’s very clear Becky has turned her unrequited romantic crush on Joyce into this over possessiveness. If she can’t be Joyce’s girlfriend she’ll be her best friend and Dorothy is a very real threat to that status. I don’t think it’s a competition though. I think they both slot into their own niches. I don’t know if Becks will ever be called out on it or that it really needs to be. Some people are frustrated with it but it seems pretty harmless so far unless she does something to really offend Dorothy or Joyce. Being really loud and obnoxious about things is kind of who Becky is.

          Joyce has poor eyesight, Dorothy wants Joyce to get her eyesight check (which Joyce obviously needs) and Becky is trying to stop it from happening) so yeah I think it has crossed over the line into needing to be called out

          I don’t think it’s that. Becky’s not trying to prevent Joyce from getting glasses as much as supporting Joyce’s stubborness. It’s a different but valid form of frienship than Dorothy. If Joyce had or does at any point say “I need glasses.” I’m pretty sure Becky would support it wholeheartedly. It’s really about what form of friendship you value more , a friend that’s got your back even if you act foolishly, or friend that tries to do what’s best for you even if you don’t want it?

          Becky crossed the line a long time ago. But I think this scene here, with her obnoxiously interrupting a serious conversation between Joyce and Dorothy, is the perfect setup for Dorothy in the next comic to just be like, “hey, fuck off,” and for an awkward but necessary conversation to ensue.

          If it were anyone other than Dorothy, Becky would have been shut down long ago. Only Dorothy’s generous disposition has kept Becky’s behavior “harmless.” Having someone deliberately poke at you and be aggressive is not harmless in most people’s book.

          Being loud and obnoxious might be who Becky is, but that doesn’t mean anyone else has to tolerate it, much less like it.

      Though I agree that Becky needs to calm down, I disagree on your point about wanting to get lunch with Sarah. She asked, was declined, and did not force her way into coming along. Ultimately her actions were fine.

        Well my original comment was meant to be more of a joke considering Sarah’s attitude toward social interactions. Becky’s not at a high enough friendship level with Sarah to pass the requirements for a “I’ll tolerate a casual lunch with you.” While Joyce and maybe even Dina would get the clear from her. But people seem to have taken it slightly more seriously than I intended.

    There was a CFA in Northtowne Mall in the 80s and early 90s, on the far east end next to the Lion Store. There was a Zondervan bookstore next to it, with a steady stream of customers between there and the CFA; they hadn’t renamed to Family Christian Stores yet. Pretty sure both of them closed long before the mall did. And now we have six CFAs in Toledo. Never thought I’d see that happen.

    I’m super late to the discussion this time, but I have to say spicy nugs would be enough to tempt me. I’m all about spicy food and I like chicken… Now I’m hungry and it’s after midnight.

      Try making the ‘ring of fire’ chicken from Good Eats if you’ve got a grill. (It’s basically just chicken pieces covered in a rub made with hot smoked paprika and cumin.) It takes a little work but it’s worth it.

      I like to brine chicken that’s destined for the grill, too. It’s easier to keep from burning or drying out.

    I now ship Joyce and Dorothy in a more serious sense than just idle speculation. Dorothy actively speaks to Joyce’s better angels and Joyce genuinely admires and respects Dorothy without putting her on a pedestal. Joyce can offer the simple love and support and fiery backing when necessary that Dorothy can and will appreciate and is drawn to.

    I wonder how Joyce would react to the knowledge that she was Becky’s second choice for the evening after eating horribly-unhealthy fast food with Sarah? Maybe Becky hates medical appointments as much as Joyce does? I also think that Becky, because she’s Joyce’s friend, is just as dedicated as Joyce to helping Sarah to develop normal social links.

    Either way, Sarah wishes to have no part of it. Although she chose to leave warning words of wisdom. Becky’s feud with Dorothy seems to be about control over Joyce, not friendship. I doubt that she’d take it in though.

    Aw man, I miss Wendy’s nugs… (Not that they aren’t around anymore but I only tend to eat Wendys when I travel out of my immediate neighborhood, and well there hasn’t been much of that in the past year for obvious reasons)

All while leaning back in a chair which costs more than most people’s entire furniture collection. In my head: You speak with the same reverence about fast food of some old men as they speak of their boarding school days at Eaton, ignoring the looks of polite incomprehension on their guest’s faces.

But in truth, nothing can compare to the original ‘jamocha’ and ‘black cow’ milkshakes from the Arby’s chain circa the mid 1980s.  And we could start an entirely different discussion on the merits of their crinkly-crispy fries of that same period versus what passes for ‘french fries’ from most fast-food joints these days.

          The fries at Wendy’s are pretty good now, at least they’re moderately thick and still resemble potato. I haven’t had BK fries in a ling time. McFries are good in their own way; it must be the beef tallow they’re double-fried in.

    My deepest desire out of this is when Becky and Dorothy finally have it out it ends with Dorothy saying “and that’s why Joyce loves me more.”

    Another day, another increase in my dislike for Becky. Good on Sarah calling her out, though I wish she spelled out the “control” bit better. Not that Becky’d have taken much stock, either way.

    Betty’s cattiness towards Dorothy was too much for me in the last few strips. But this iteration was both funny and much more focused on what Betty actually wants (NUGGS, to be Joyce’s bestie) that I can sympathize and laugh with her. This is the Betty I enjoy the most.

    Hoping this is actually the culmination of the conflict and we’re getting an actual reaction in the next strip
    (Although I wonder if Joyce wants to avoid glasses so badly that she’d side with Betty to get out of it)

    Why would Becky expect anyone, apart from Dina and Joyce, to want to spend time with her is beyond me.

    She goes out of her way to antagonize people so she shouldn’t be surprised that Sarah rejects her request

    I’m starting to wish horrible things to Becky and Walky. Their attitudes are just grating. Especially Becky and this newfound hate train on her part with Dorothy.

    If Dorothy puts exlax in her food, I will cheer her on.

      but glasses are different and becky has already decided she and joyce are getting married and having that perfect suburban life! if joyce has glasses, then it’s different from the vision she has in her head, ergo no glasses

      plus, it’s something she can argue with dotty over, which is much more important than caring about the person you keep saying is your best friend’s health…

        Well, there’s an interesting distinction I just noticed in Becky’s line in the last panel. She completely turned Sarah’s words around in her head; it seems to matter more to Becky that she is Joyce‘s best friend than the other way around.
