Actually, I think it’s a SFX for the block that sets up the judo throw. Any lame punk can start a fight, but it takes a good manipulator (or a gifted evil bongo like Ruth) to sucker somebody into actually taking you up on an invitation to kick their ass and then helping you do so with their own bodily momentum.
Ruth is so bossy she doesn’t just tell you to do something, she tells you to tell you to do something. That’s right. She makes you boss yourself.
Yay for Dina getting a line. Boo for it being explaining the pun. Nice to see Mandy too. And hey, for once nobody will be saying Dorothy looks like Amber. I have a feeling they’ll be saying she looks like Leslie today.
It’s all part of Willis’ nefarious plan to keep sneaking characters into the banner until it’s even more crowded than the SP! one. Like a fully-clothed character orgy.
So apparently Ruth only makes threats involving femurs to everyone. I would have assumed she would have made at least a few different threats.,maybe she is saving the other threats for later.
I can’t help but think about how much more enjoyable this particular comic would have been in “Shortpacked!”‘s rectangular layout as opposed to this strip layout. There isn’t enough room for any of the action to play out.
I disagree! I was particularly satisfied with this one. I worried, similar to you, that I wouldn’t be able to get in everything I wanted, but I came out of it with more than I’d wanted, much less expected. That second panel, the really tall one with Ruth heaving Billie into the air? That couldn’t happen in Shortpacked!’s layout. In order to get something that tall, it’d have to be two rows high, and at that huge size, it has a completely different impact, rhythm, and prominence. Making it wider instead would have been the wrong timing and intensity.
There never would have been more “action to play out.” It wasn’t a space thing. I wanted Ruth’s victory to be quick and decisive.
I loved Ruth in Roomies and was greatly saddened by her passing. Not only am I happy as a lark that she’s in this comic, but I can seriously say watching her deadlift Billie OVER HER HEAD tugged at my fragile heartstrings.
David Willis, now I treasure the last few years of reading your comics and owning a print of “The Many Faces of Sal” even more. God Bless You, good sir!
Ruth did show up towards the end of IW! as one of the souls Walky meets between his death and his taking over The Cheese. She was dead, but she was still technically part of the story.
Is Billie supposed to be fat or is Ruth just taunting her with something a cheerleader doesnt want to hear?
All the female characters look a bit pudgy unless they’re *clearly* skinny (Dina) but the default body type seems to be ‘wide’… or do I have it all wrong?
Come on, Willis, you should know this– you don’t keep your glasses when you get hurled through the air. I’d expect a cheerleader to have sports-specs, though.
I’m only Shortpacked! Generation, so I don’t know who the girl with the green hat is, but she is my favorite now.
FAKE EDIT: Oh, crap, that’s Dina isn’t it. This bodes, I only need hair gel to BE Mike.
GASP! Her name isn’t a straight up pun! I am outraged, sir, OUTRAGED! The end of an era, man. I’ve got to go pour a 40 out on the ground for the death of pun names.
Eh, she doesn’t really strike me as a bully. The whole point of an RA is to keep order in a residence that is typically full of raging hormones, dramaz, and overall college-age assholeishness. This doesn’t seem like it’s her first round around the RA block, so she probably knows that it’s much easier to establish that she won’t take shit right at the beginning of the year.
Most high school teachers also feel a need to do this, and I would assume at least some college freshmen are alot like high schoolers. It’s perfectly logical for Ruth to establish her status as “Overlord” as soon as possible.
I am assuming the bit about college freshmen being like high schoolers because I went to a comunity college freshmen year and took mostly night classes. Which were full of either nursing students, retired people, or construction workers.
So I’m guessing Billie and Ruth are much closer in age in this Walkyverse (Walkyverse-2? Would that make the original Walkyverse Prime? Or Walkyverse-1?)…
If were following DC Universe naming conventions this one would be Walkyverse-1 and the older one would be Walkyverse-2, and the one where good and evil is reversed would be Walkyverse-3.
No, I still don’t understand why the older DC Universe has to be 2 and the newer one gets to be 1. Can some one explain it?
From an in-universe perspective, both universes are the same age; the characters don’t know who was published first, and apart from when superheroes first appeared they’re substantially the same. Barry Allen discovered the alternate Earth, so he got to name it (the Earth-2 characters did occasionally joke that this was kind of presumptuous).
From an out-of-universe perspective, Earth-1 was where most of their stories took place at the time, so it was the primary universe (and remained so, with only a few series set on Earth-2). Julius Schwartz did later admit that it might have made more sense to do it the other way around, but it was too late to do anything about it.
No0ne
In Infinite Crisis Superman-2 pointed out that time ran differently between the two universes so his universe was older, people were older. (IE Batman was an old retired guy who took over for Commissioner Gordon in Earth-2) If you’ve ever read the book Timeline then you would know that parallel universes do not have to have equal time flow you could find a universe where it’s really 1972 or 2072. If you haven’t read Timeline go do it… the book is awesome.

And here comes a little bit of Squad 48!

Also, Ruth’s crotch appears to be exploding in panel one. 😛
RaijinK
That could explain a lot about her mood.
Trae Dorn
Either that, or it’s foreshadowing… 😛

Femurs is such a funny word.
David Herbert
Yep, that’s why she wants to keep hers.

DINA GOT A LINE YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY
davmopedia
“tells you to tell you to show up” ? Bit of a typo on that one.

And Billie’s in the banner now? When’d that happen?
Malph
I just noticed that too. I swear that wasn’t there earlier.

Or NOT fully-clothed.
David
I’m actually making it a personal mission of mine to NOT crowd the banner this time! Adding Billie was a moment of weakness.
beeftony
Didn’t you have the entire cast on there at the panel where you unveiled the comic? What happened to that?
That said, I definitely like how Joyce looks here better than the original version.
David
Intentionally discarded!
karfsma
Ah, hindsight.
Sarge
Oh… Dina. On the one hand I’m happy to see her again, on the other hand it’s bringing back those horrible memories…
At least she’s wearing a goofy dinosaur hat.

Sadly no Sal yet…
Shadowman
Is that…Is that Robin’s sister I see in the next-to-last panel?
Trae Dorn
Yep. She was in yesterday’s comic too
Deviltrig
Not yesterday’s, but she was in Tuesday’s comic. Close enough. And we have yet to see a full view of her.

I don’t think that’s a deadlift. I think it’s more of a judo move, she’s deflecting Billie’s forward momentum. But, I might be wrong.
Marc
EDIT: Sorry, Ruth was part of It’s Walky…been a while. All the rest shall remain as stated.
Trae Dorn
No… you were right the first time. Ruth was in Roomies! not It’s Walky!
George

No, you were right the first time. A mere few months before It’s Walky rolled around Ruth died in the Great Shit Shower of 1999.

May it be assumed Dina has MULTIPLE hats this time around?

Billie has what are called “birthing hips.”
Wackd
Such is the cost of keeping aspects of the status quo in an AU comic. Billie has birthing hips when she has never given birth.
Or has she? Find out, on the next All My Dumbing.
David
You, uh, don’t need to have given birth in order to have birthing hips. That’s not what the term means.
Rachel
It’s funny that people think that’s what it means, though. Makes for interesting conversations. 🙂
Cyberlink420
So wait…Billie is now part Asian and has “birthing hips”…
…is she Chun-Li’s long lost sister?
Mally
Don’t forget the Thunder-Thighs!
(Though really, how could you?)
Demetrius
I thought at first(While looking through the comments) I was going to be the only person to see the nickname cameo.
I am happy I was wrong.
George
I really want to see a Ruth Twitter feed now. The others are great, and I get the feeling she’d start an epic flame war with Mike.
Wackd
Seconded.
Dave
Ouch! Poor Billie! Great judo throw by Ruth, though. XD

No.

The girl in the last panel (the one shushing) looks like a female Scott Pilgrim.
Mike Warner
So does your mom.
Right after I’ve fucked. her.
She dropped a bunch of nickels afterward.

what a mike 10$ says thats walky’s 2nd personallity

I love you Willis. You have restored my entire faith in this comic just by this comic alone. Good show!

I demand you start selling copies of Dinas hat!

SECONDED! And I’ll take a dozen…
NinjaNick
Hey! It’s Mandy!
I liked Dina’s dinosaur hat as well.
Whoa! Don’t mess with the Ruthster. 😮
Edde
And in normal person would tell ‘Ms Lessick’ to go fuck herself.

i would play Alexandher will you fuck yourself tonight 😛 and then disturbed sacrifice for the fight scene

Maybe my scars are just too fresh, but I don’t find anything funny about a bully.
